In 1926 Casavant Frères, Limitée built an organ (Opus 1130) for St. James Methodist Church (Chicago). The church’s organist, Tina Mae Haines, a student of the Parisian organist and composer Félixt-Alexandre Guilmant, was the impetus behind the project. Miss Haines used her knowledge of the great Cavaillé-Coll Organs, which dominate Paris, to collaborate with Casavant in building an organ of the highest craftsmanship. Not surprisingly, Opus 1130 incorporates some Cavaillé-Coll pipework. A musical pioneer in Chicago in her day, Miss Haines helped

found Chicago’s Sherwood Conservatory, collaborated with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as lecturer, and was an accomplished conductor and organist. Opus 1130 became one of Chicago’s prominent concert organs and the famous

Parisian organist and composer Marcel Dupré, a personal friend of Miss Haines, frequently concertized on this organ and gave it great acclaim.

As St. James was closing its doors in 2011, St. John Cantius was looking for an organ. By God’s grace, Stephen Schnurr (Organ Historical Society) and Jeff Weiler, Organ Restorer and Conservator, helped the Patrons of Sacred Music at St. John Cantius discover how perfect this Casavant Organ would be for St. John Cantius. By the goodness of our Lord Jesus Christ, and His Mother Mary, and by their intercession, the Patrons raised the funds with the generosity of our donors.

After a two year restoration by Casavant Frères and J.L. Weiler, Inc., we behold the stunning results! But the arrival of Opus 1130 (weigh-ing 23 tons) required rebuilding the organ loft at St. John Cantius. Once complete, we filled the new organ loft with hundreds of Miracu-lous Medals of Our Lady, Holy Rosaries and Brown Scapulars of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, which Rev. Scott A. Haynes, SJC, Chaplain of the Patrons of Sacred Music, had blessed. Thus, this newly restored Casavant Pipe organ sits upon the loft as if it were Mary’s lap, just as Our Lord did in Bethlehem. With this in mind, we named Opus 1130, “Tina Mae,” to honor Miss Tina Mae Haines. Furthermore, this name is most fitting, for “Tina,” the shortened form of the name “Christina” recalls the name of Christ our High Eternal High Priest, just as “Mae” is a variant of the Holy Name of “Mary.”

*Purvis wrote his arrangement of “Greensleeves” during World War II in a foxhole under enemy fire. Purvis was captured in the Battle of the Bulge, imprisoned in Stalag 13B (Hammelburg, Germany), and was finally freed by American forces. Later as organist at San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral, Purvis played this music on their Aeolian Skinner Organ, “Gussie.” Today we hear it on “Tina Mae.” ** Reger’s Weihnachten (“Christmas”) 1914 paints a picture of Christmas at the outset of World War I. Dark storm clouds haunted Europe. Yet at Christmas we hear “In dulci jubilo” (Good Christian Men Rejoice) rising from the gloomy trenches of war. The ugliness of world war brings strife and dissonance, but the Christ Child descends to from heaven as we hear “Vom Himmel hoch” (From Heaven above I come to you). Christmas brings hope and ushers in the Prince of Peace, as we chime in Christmas with “Stille Nacht” (Silent Night).
