1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (e.g. stage performance in rock videos, dance routine)

2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals.3. There is a relationship between music and visuals.4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of

close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style)

5. There is frequently references to notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, ect) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

6. There is often intertextual references (to films, tv programs, other music videos ect)

ANALYSING MUSIC VIDEOS: 1)

• Kenye West – Gold Digger ft Jamie Foxx Plain backgrounds, women, brands, money and bling.• DJ Khaled – Hold You Down ft. Chris

• Gold DiggerWhen Kanye west raps certain lyrics we see them in the background as magazine titles.• Hold You DownThe music video is talking about holding down a relationship so when each singer sings then are in a room with a women dancing and acting. E.g. when we see Chris Brown for the first time with his ’girlfriend’

• Gold DiggerThe visuals and the music do have a relationship. For example right at the beginning when we hear Jamie Foxx singing the beat then drops and the visuals move with the beat.• Hold You Down When the beat drops and the artist are on their own we are move locations and see them in a room with a women (their ‘girlfriend’)

• Gold Digger We see close ups of the artist and also when he sings we see him constantly doing this one move where he seems to lean back and bop. Half tucked in shirt.• Hold You DownWe constantly hear Dj Khaled say ‘DJ’ in the music video. This is to remind us that this is his production.
