Aims

This slideshow is meant to offer a glimpse into my body of work.

This is by no means a comprehensive resource but I hope it will showcase my aesthetic vision and my technical skill.

I have selected images that have been well received by the client, shoots that felt particularly challenging at the time or projects that taught me something new.

Enjoy!

Preparing for the Game

Location: North London

Equipment: Panasonic Lumix G3

I chose to focus specifically on the products within the photograph, such as the boots and the sports socks, to test out different techniques of manipulating depth perception with my G3. As can be seen in the photograph, I used the blurring tool provided by post-production software to give the appearance of foreshortening. This highlighted the sharp detail of the white painted line on the grass, the shoes and the socks.

The creation of a colour distinction between the green of the grass and the light background was also important to me. I played with the colour saturation to make the image more distinct and hyper-realist.

As Night Shadows the City

Location: Cape Town, South Africa

Equipment: Panasonic Lumix G3

This shot was taken from a vantage point in my beautiful home city of Cape Town in South Africa. I waited for the opportune time for the lighting to be right, especially to caption the reflection of the city’s lights on the clouds above. In post-production, I highlighted the blue and yellow tones of the city’s lights, and varied the contrast settings to really make the photograph pop. The G3 was perfect for taking this expansive shot, and it handled the trip up to the vantage point without any difficulty.

Not for the Children

Location: Andre Pienaar Studio, Camden

Equipment: Panasonic Lumix G3

This was a project created to showcase the work of a fellow artist, who creates small figurines of quirky figures for sale online and in his bricks and mortar shop. This particular figure had an edgy look, so I created a graffiti background and added fake blood to make the figurine seem more menacing.

I experimented with lighting and the zoom function on my G3 to make the character seem life-like and life-sized. As well as focusing on the figurine to create a sense of depth, I used the blurring tool to further distort the background.

Poisonous Morning

Location: Andre Pienaar Studio, Camden

Equipment: Panasonic Lumix G3

This playful photo shoot encapsulates a story within three distinct images. I enjoyed setting the scene for these blackly humorous shots, paying homage to the idea of marriage in the 1950s household whilst adding a little twist. The models and props (such as the hat on the table and the smoking pipe) were provided by a local business to promote their retro events and products (such as the clothing).

I used post-production techniques to highlight the acid yellow of the poison bottle, but still kept it within the tonal range of the photographs. The overall look of the photograph is gritty, intentionally made to make the photograph stand out. The lower contrast makes the subjects more vibrant.

Golden Car

Location: North London

Equipment: Panasonic Lumix G3

This was a study in the use of post-production effects, and I used various photo editing techniques to create a heavily stylised look. I decided to make the photograph an HDR image, overlaying several photographs on top of one another, for emphasis. I played around with the tone levels on this one, hoping to emphasise the subject detailing and to make it stand out against the dull background.

The end result was quite satisfactory. The central element is clearly differentiated from the rest of the image and the entire composition is dynamic and employs skewed lines to bring a bit of life into what would have otherwise been boring still life.

Whisky Piano

Location: Andre Pienaar Studio, Camden

Equipment: Panasonic Lumix G3

This was a shot of a miniature piano that a contact of mine had built from scratch. The brief was to capture a sense of class and refinement that would highlight the product. Using my G3 camera, I was able to highlight the colour juxtaposition of the lighter foreground and darker background, whilst staging the whisky bottle and the glass for dramatic effect.

I wanted to create a slightly aged feel to the photograph, given the antiquated look of the piano. I used a blurring tool to give the photograph a bit of a used feel. I particularly liked the play of the light on the various objects, especially on the sculpted legs of the piano, so I tried to capture it in the image.

My contact was very happy with the photograph, and used it to sell his piano artwork on various crafting websites.
