Tales of my Village ~ André Mack

André Mack is a well-known French artist whose links with Jersey began as a result of the illustration of a book of short stories by the French writer and historian Mathurin Monier (1901-1974). This book, a posthumous publication, was entitled “Contes de mon village” (Tales of my Village) and appeared in 1985 after the author’s daughter, Jersey-based Jenny Moore invited André Mack to illustrate her father’s work. The collaboration proved to be an instant success, and the book received high acclaim in France, and also enabled André Mack to further his career here in Jersey through multiple exhibitions on the island.

André Mack’s illustrations in “Contes de mon village” are all sanguine pastels which are entirely based upon the Breton countryside and village life of Yvignac, a quaint village situated a short drive away from Dinan. Each picture was produced in tandem with the themes of each story in the book of which only a handful of limited edition (individually numbered) copies now remain.
