Dear Parents/Guardians
JANUARY 2020 NEWSLETTER
1. New Beginnings 1.1 Welcome to a new academic year at Anderson Primary School. To our new parents/ guardians
amongst us, a warm welcome to our Anderson Family. January 2020 ushers in, not just a new year, but also a brand new decade (2020 – 2029).
1.2 2020 is a special year also because we will be celebrating our 20th School Anniversary. The theme for 2020 is Anderson True North: Celebrating our Positive Core. Our school website has also been updated accordingly (QR code on Pg 3). We will continue to refresh the school website to make it current, relevant and useful for our stakeholders.
1.3 Anderson Primary School has done well over the years because of strong leadership, dedicated
teaching and non‐teaching staff and supportive parents and stakeholders who have walked this journey, hand‐in‐hand, together with us. This has been, and still is, the positive core of the school.
1.4 20 years on, we remain steadfast to our mission to providing quality, holistic education to every child who enters the Anderson school gate every morning. As a school, we value every child. We believe every child has immeasurable worth and immense potential to excel and flourish; every child wants to learn, overcome and succeed in life. Our role as educators is to enable, enrich this process and facilitate their all‐round learning, holistic growth and discovery of themselves and of the world around them. This we shall do, hand‐in‐hand, with you, our parents. Anderson True North, in sum, is this set of shared beliefs and values of this learning school community. Guided by our True North and in celebration of our Positive Core in this 20th Anniversary, we aspire to scale new heights. This we shall endeavour through continuous and deep learning within a culture of collaboration and trust.
1.5 In our school calendar, there will be two key celebratory events this year:
Homecoming, Family Day cum Open House: Anderson True North on 30 May 2020 (Sat)
School Concert: People, Passion, Poise III on 12 Nov 2020 (Thu) First, we will be having our Homecoming, Family Day cum Open House: Anderson True North on 30 May 2020 (Sat). It is a major school event where students will attend. This event aims to gather our former students back to their alma mater (Homecoming), have our families coming together to celebrate through games and food (Family Day by the PSG once in two years) and for the first time, an Open House where we warmly invite and welcome interested stakeholders and members of our community to immerse in an Anderson showcase. The second event will be our school concert which we hold once every two years. People, Passion, Poise III will be held towards the end of the academic year, on 12 Nov 2020 (Thu). A culmination of our SYF performances and the Anderson aesthetics programmes, this will be held at an external concert venue.

2. Anderson Primary School‐Based Assessment (SBA) in 2020 2.1 P1 and P2: (No Change). We started the use of subject‐specific Learning Outcomes (LO) and a set
of 4‐level Qualitative Descriptors (QD) to report students’ learning progress since 2019. This practice, in line with national education policies, will continue. For P1 parents, there will be a Principal’s briefing in February to give you more details on this.
2.2 (NEW in 2020) P3 and P5: No Mid‐Year Exams wef 2020 This is an important change. In line with the national education policy to support students to learn for life by re‐balancing the trade‐off between rigour and joy of learning, the following SBA changes at the P3 and P5 levels will be effected from 2020. At Anderson Primary School, we will be removing Mid‐Year Exams (MYE) for P3 and P5 with effect from 2020. In lieu of MYE, P3 and P5 students will have Weighted Assessment (WA) spread out in Terms 2 and 3. WA refers to assessments where the scores form part of the computation of a student’s overall results in a subject for the year. There will still be End‐of‐Year (EOY) Exams for these two levels. More details will be shared at the Principal’s briefing in February.
2.3 P4 and P6: (No Change). There will be MYE for these two levels, and Prelims (for P6) and EOY
Exams (for P4).
2.4 (At a glance) The table below outlines Anderson Primary SBA Structures.

3. Consolidating 2019: A Year of Achievements with Thanksgiving 3.1 The school had a fulfilling year in 2019 and we celebrate the wonderful achievements and effort
of our staff and students in our quest for excellence. We congratulate our graduating cohort of 2019 for having successfully completed their primary education with us and are embarking on their new education journey in their respective secondary schools. We wish all of them the very best in their new secondary schools.
3.2 A group of our Primary 3 and 4 students participated in the 2019 ICAS Assessments (English, Mathematics, Science and Digital Technologies) which was organised by UNSW Global. Kaitlyn Choy Jie Wen (P3.4 in 2019) was recognised as a medal winner for ICAS English Assessment for her outstanding achievement as the highest scorer in Singapore. Congratulations and well done, Kaitlyn.
3.3 In the non‐academic areas, the school prides itself for its student‐centric focus and holistic school
programmes. In the area of Student Leadership, our inaugural Student Leaders’ Investiture (Theme: Courage & Sincerity) and ASEAN Smart City overseas learning journey for P5 Student Leaders (Bangkok, Thailand) were successfully conducted. We also introduced a new Design Thinking Smart Homes module for our school‐based P6 ANDventure curriculum. The module culminated with our P6 students showcasing their project ideas and prototypes in a Design Thinking Smart Homes Exhibition. Our P2 students also got a chance to experience the vibrant CCA programmes through our inaugural CCA Open House.

3.4 In Sports, our Volleyball Junior and Senior Boys teams emerged among the Top 4 in the North Zone Championships and Top 16 in the National Championships. For our pro‐environment initiatives and efforts in implementing a holistic environment education, Anderson Primary School was awarded the Vanda Miss Joaquim Award in the Singapore Environment Council‐StarHub School Green Awards.

For those who have yet to register, please do so at the General Office as soon as possible. Please look for Mdm Chew Poh Choo or Mdm Ang Yann Yann.
9.2 We seek your cooperation in ensuring the safety of students coming to and leaving school. This
is especially important as young children do not always fully understand the dangers presented. The school will advise and educate our students on the importance of road safety on an on‐going basis. Please join us in educating our students on the need to use pedestrian crossing points and practise kerb drill when making their way to and from school. Please refer to Annex E. We appreciate your assistance in adhering to the traffic rules and regulations.
10. School‐based Student Care Centre (SCC) 10.1 Our school works with Alphajoy Educare Pte Ltd to operate the school‐based SCC wef 2 January
2018. Admission priority for school‐based SCC will be given to students who are Singapore Citizens who will benefit from a structured and supportive environment in after‐school care, and particularly where both parents are working. Given the greater needs of P1 and P2 students for after‐school care, we will also be giving priority to students from the Lower Primary.
10.2 At the end of 2019, the school worked closely with SCC to open up additional places to cater to
an increased demand. These places have since been filled and there is, at present, no vacancy. For parents who are interested in sending your child to an after‐school SCC, you may consider a community‐based SCC.

ANDERSON PRIMARY SCHOOL ‐ ROAD SAFETY ALONG ANG MO KIO AVENUE 9
Since the operation of the new access at the Ang Mo Kio Thye Hua Kwan (AMK THK) Hospital on 30 April 2016, the school has been working closely with the hospital in managing the pedestrian crossing as well as the traffic at the access during the arrival and dismissal hours of the school. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility and we seek everyone’s support in continuing to ensure the safety of our students when arriving and leaving school. For Parents Who Drive 40km/h When Lights Flash Sign: In 2018, LTA installed this road safety feature at two locations near the school. The first location is along Ang Mo Kio Ave 9, just before AMK‐THK Hospital’s entrance. The second location is opposite the school, just outside the former Chaoyang School. This road safety feature signals the start of an Enhanced School Zone. Two amber lights will flash alternatively during school days from 6.30 am to 7.45 am and from 12 noon to 2.30 pm. Upon reaching this zone, motorists should reduce their travelling speed to 40km/h when the lights are in operation. Motorists should still drive within the designated speed limit of the road when the lights are not in operation. Motorists caught committing the offence of careless/inconsiderate driving, beating red lights, or speeding within school zones will receive an additional demerit point from the Traffic Police. The school has observed that the traffic flow along AMK Ave 9 has been slow and congested especially during the school’s dismissal hours as a result of vehicles parked along AMK Ave 9. The public bus services have also been affected as vehicles were observed to be parked at the bus stop located outside the AMK THK Hospital.
To ensure the safety of our students, public road users and the smooth movement of vehicles, buses and ambulances along AMK Ave 9, we would like to seek the full co‐operation of all parents/ guardians who drive to observe the following: a) To park your vehicles at the neighborhood HDB car park while waiting for your child if you are
early. Do not park your vehicle along AMK Avenue 9. b) To arrange to pick up your child at the pick‐up area in the school compound at the following timing,
after the buses have left the school premises.
Day Pick up Time
Monday to Thursday After 1.50 pm
Friday After 1.35 pm

For Students Travelling on Foot We seek the support of all parents/ guardians to role model good road safety measures and to reinforce correct road safety behavior such as taking instructions from the traffic marshals, and observing traffic rules when coming to and leaving school. Remind your child/ ward to practise the kerb drill before crossing ‐ “look right, look left, look right again, ensure all vehicles have stopped, and raise your hand high up and cross the road briskly”. Parents/ Guardians as Role‐Models We would like to thank parents for your partnership in educating our children on the importance of road safety. As the role models for our children, let us demonstrate our care and responsibility as road users through our actions. Dismissal Arrangement starting from 2019 In 2018, LTA completed a sheltered linkway along the footpath outside the school from the main vehicular entrance (Gate B) to the junction of Ang Mo Kio Ave 6 and 9. They have also extended the shelter to the school’s Gate E. Together with the existing linkway from the AMK‐THK Hospital exit to the school’s Gate A, all pedestrians will have a sheltered walk from school to the 2 signalised pedestrian traffic crossings and traffic junction. We have also created a sheltered waiting area for parents/guardians just inside Gate A. This will help to keep our parents/guardians sheltered from the sun and rain while they wait for our students during dismissal. As an added safety and security measure, parents/ guardians will not be allowed into the school compound beyond this waiting area. The small side gate will continue to be opened 5 minutes before school dismissal. Similarly, parents/guardians will wait just inside the small gate (Gate E) next to Nuovo condominium. For safety and security reasons, they will also not be allowed into the school compound beyond this waiting area. As our P1 Form Teachers will bring the P1 students to Gate A at dismissal time, we seek all parents/guardians of P1 students to wait only at Gate A, and not to use Gate E. For all other levels, it is important that you decide which Gate (A or E) you will use at dismissal time and inform your child/ward so that he/she will know which gate to use during dismissal. It will be useful to write this down in your child/ward’s Student Handbook. On rainy days, we will still allow parents/guardians to wait for their children/wards at the car drop‐off point during school dismissal. The above arrangements also apply to dismissal after remedial, supplementary, and other after‐school programmes (e.g. CCA). Parents/Guardians who fetch their children/wards by cars can still enter the school to fetch their children/wards 20 minutes after dismissal time. This is to allow the school buses to leave the school compound. We urge all parents/guardians to time their arrival such that they do not block traffic along AMK Ave 9. We also remind parents/guardians to only allow their children/wards to alight from the left‐side doors. Drivers are also reminded to switch off their vehicle engines while their vehicle are parked. We have noted that there are parents/guardians who drive above the speed limit of 10kmh while in the school compound. We urge all parents/guardians to observe this speed limit for the safety of their
17
children/wards. We also urge all parents/guardians to be patient and wait for their turn to drive off after fetching/dropping off their children/wards. Please do not overtake vehicles still waiting in front as there may be children who alight using the right‐side doors. Parents/Guardians, including those waiting in their vehicles, are also reminded that smoking is prohibited in school premises and within 5 metres from the school perimeters. We have informed all drivers in 2019 that only vehicles displaying our school car‐decal will be allowed into the school compound starting from 2 Jan 2020. To‐date, we have issued more than 500 car‐decals. All other vehicles will have to drop‐off or fetch students outside the school compound. As our school personnel and security guard will stop vehicles without our school car‐decal from driving into the school compound, we seek all your kind understanding to comply with their directions for the safety of our students. As an additional safety measure, we have created a road hump just at our exit gate (Gate D) to slow down traffic as they approach this exit gate. This is to enhance safety for all pedestrians crossing Gate D.
