It will include some articles sent to the editor and some facts gathered from the Research Center. It is coming to you as 2010 is bright and new, a new year for our chapter under a new club President, a Census year, and a new year full of hope and promise for our country, state and county. At the December meeting, Reverand Bob Carlilse was elected as the president. Mrs Jennie Gentry was elected Vice President and Ms. Joyce Fields voted Corresponding Secretary for the next term. Each year for genealogists is a year that could be bringing us closer to a revelation about our ancestors, the tearing down of a brick wall, and locating a whole family \n relation to history. Who knows what the year will bring. This past year this editor has found two families leading back to the Seventeenth Century. The Reeder family had been traced back to the 1740's by myself but had failed to go back any farther. I got in touch with a lady who had done research in the state of Maryland and she had done the legwork for me. Mine was another branch of the local Reeder family. This past year, I also got started on a family tree on Ancestry.com where I was able to post and "steal" pictures of my ancestors. It is hard to explain the excitement I get when I find a picture of a person I had been researching for years. I will try to explain the word "steal." Ancestry has a new feature where you can find others researching the same families and capture them for your tree. It also includes pictures and stories that you can put in your tree. Of course, the work should be examined by you to see if it is indeed the person that is part of your family and that the proof offered is good proof. Fortunately, I found my Ward family by getting in touch with people who were related to the sister of my ancestor and they had Bibles, tombstones, and pictures that proved that person was a member of my family. Alas, I had been researching that family for thirty years. One lady was as far away as Washington State and she and I have corresponded on my husband's family. I didn't mean for this to be a commercial for the site but Ancestry makes its website available as a depository for your tree so it can serve as a backup for all your research. There are some items that are free. For example my family tree is open to all those that might be researching the same persons. The databases like Census' available through Ancestry still must be purchased. Genealogy gives such a satisfaction- the hunt, the capture ofthe information and the sharing of the data. I wish for all our members to have the very best experiences in 2010 and may your brick walls come down. DUES ARE NOW BEING ACCEPTED One of those new year chores that one has to do is to begin renewing memberships in clubs and organizations. Our club offers a wonderful bargain. As one of the clubs with the lowest memberships in the state, Anderson County Chapter is a bargain beyond all bargains. QUERY

I'm desperately looking for any information onmy Great Grandmother, Elizabeth Gable. She'sburied in an Anderson SC cemetery & herfamily comes from there. She never marriedand had 6 children who moved into Habersham

County in Georgia, (she's buried in a pauper'sgrave, I understand)

I know she was born & died in Anderson and

family must have continued to live there since Ihave a photo of her at an old age marked onthe back as being in Anderson. The rest of herfamily (my grandfather ,mother, uncles, etc)were raised in Clarkesville, GA. My Grandfatherwas in the SC 168 INF 42 Division in WWI &

received a Purple Heart.

Since she never married, I'm at a standstill (for10 years now) as to who her parents were! Canyou recommend anyone to help me? I will bemore than happy to buy books or pay foranything that can be found. It's killing me! I'vesearched so long.

Her full name was Sarah Elizabeth AnglentineGable/Gabrel. I believe her Mother's name was

First Licensed Physician was from the Upstate(Abstracted from several newspaper articles by Jim Wigington and an article written byBill Tripp in William Gilmore Simms History of South Carolina, c. 1922, sent in byJannifer Burriss)

William Austin Tripp was born and reared in the Brushy Creek township ofAndersonCounty (currently Powdersville area) 21 Sep 1866, a son of John Robert and Harriet"Hettie" Elizabeth Johnson Tripp. John Robert Tripp was the oldest son of Elias andSarah Ann Smith Tripp and grandson of John Tripp who had settled on Reedy River inGreenville County. The Elias Tripp family first settled in Pickens County but later theyremoved to Greenville. John Robert enlisted in the Confederate Army to serve fouryears. After the war, in May 1865, he married and rented his wife's family farm inAnderson County. He and Hettie had two children, William Austin and Essie Corneliawho married Hubbert B. Smith. Hettie died when the children were small and JohnRobert married secondly Mattie Reeve. Ten years later, he bought land in AndersonCounty and became a farmer until his death in 3 June 1910.

Will Tripp grew up on the family farm in the Mt. Springs area near where Wren HighSchool stands today. He attended school at Mt. Springs and Cedar Wreath. He met hisfuture wife attending Mt. Springs Church and in 1882 walked to Amanda ElizabethBryant's house, asked her to marry him and they walked to Piedmont to be married. They lived in a one-room house and soon had three children. One day, he decided thatfarming was not for him and he thought about becoming a doctor. In fall of 1889, heentered Atlanta Medical College, excelled and graduated at the top of his class in 1894.Graduation, however, did not guarantee him a job in South Carolina. He had to take atest before the S. C. Medical Examination Board. This was the first year that the testingprogram was required for a license.

The test, given in Charleston, was long and difficult but Will finished first. After the testwas over, the proctor told Will to go home and they would notify him by mail. He toldthe director that he would not go until he knew if he had passed or failed. The boardwas convinced to grade his paper that day. Because it was the first paper graded,William Austin Tripp became the first licensed physician to practice medicine in thestateof South Carolina.

Dr. Will Tripp knew the need was great for professional doctors in the upstate anddecided to come back to where he was raised to open a practice. In 1895, he openedan office in the Three and Twenty community of Anderson County. His principal meansof transportation was horseback. He had to provide himself with equipment, and evendrugs to serve his patients. By 1892, his practice had grown so that he had to buy atwo-wheel road cart to travel around the countryside. He was in such demand byeveryone, even farmers would call on him to help with their animals since there were noveterinarians. Fights and accidents kept him busy as well as mothers giving birth.Typhoid fever, croup, pneumonia were usually treated with home remedies. It wasstandard practice before the twentieth century to use the Tour P's" - puke, purge, plaster and phlebotomy (bleeding). Sometimes the cure could be worse than thedisease. Of course, as medical knowledge increased, the old-time cures were no longer

used, like treating croup with sulphur and molasses, or using a piece of red flannelgreased with tallow and kerosene as a plaster on the chest for colds and pneumonia.

Dr. Will developed an extensive library and continued to learn about his profession. Hehad a cure for pellagra, a disease caused by a deficiency of niacin in the diet. He wasone of the first doctors to treat diabetic patients with insulin. It wasn't long before hesoon needed a bigger office and he bought 44 acres of land across the road owned byJames Burdine, for $58 per acre, the highest price paid for land in the area to build anoffice. He and Amanda had nine children together. The eight boys and one girl becamegreat helpers around the farm and grew up to be valued members of the community.

Dr. Will was a member of the Anderson and Pickens Counties Medical societies and theState Medical Society. In 1913, he was elected by S.C. legislature to be a trustee of theS.C. Medical College. He was appointed by Governor Blease to be Anderson CountyTreasurer to fill out an unexpired term, serving in that office one year. He wasconsidered a candidate for the Superintendent of the State Hospital but Dr. Trippwouldn't accept the office because it meant moving to Columbia. During World War I,Dr. Tripp served on the Exemption Board. His workdays were quite long after putting inlong hours working for the Board, he came home to patients at night, who had beenwaiting all day. Itwas also during the time of the great Influenza epidemic.

Dr. Tripp was involved in Community affairs such as Woodman of the World. He was aMaster Mason and Knight of Pythias. He had a vital interest in local schools and wasone of three men who served on a commission to build the first major roads in AndersonCountyrWe^erfiairrea>Btf Anderson Courity-officers-andemployees at his home to a "possum and tater supper." This bill of fare was quite adelicacy during the time.
