Elevator ContractorsCertification Renewals were sent out via e-mail in October. If you have any questions or did not receive your renewal notification, contact Kathy Bell at [email protected]. RENEW TODAY!!

NAEC Certification Renewals Are Due by December 31st!

ATTENTION MEMBERS:

NAEC is pleased to announce that the Commercial Elevator course has been approved for AIA credit.

For information on the presentation and how to receive a copy to present to architects in your area, contact Amanda Smith at [email protected].

The Accessibility & Residential Committee met during the Convention in Grand Rapids, MI, where an update on the recent meeting held by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in Washington, DC, was given. The CPSC is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risk of injury or death associated with the unsafe use of products. The meeting was called by the CPSC to gather more information from members of the elevator Industry in order to better understand what actions the CPSC could take to alert the general public and help eliminate the potential safety hazards related to home elevators that do not meet current industry safety codes and standards. Representatives from AEMA were also present. It was noted that the CPSC has taken the initiative to contact all State Governors regarding the ASME Code A17.1. The Washington Post published an article after this meeting alleging to describe it, although inaccuracies were included. Following that, the CPSC released a statement of the Acting Chair, Ann Marie Buerkle, to the public on August 1, entitled Safety Alert to Protect Children from a Deadly Gap Between Doors of Home Elevators, with the support of NAEC and AEMA.

The Accessibility & Residential Committee also discussed the production of two safety videos demonstrating proper

NAEC Committee Update: Accessibility & Residential Committee

installation for residential elevators and corrective actions for the 3/5-inch gap in them.

The first video will contain instructional points for installing and designing new home elevators. It will be directly geared towards contractors, architects, and builders and explain why they should build or install based on the new residential elevators by showing the potential entrapment hazards of the old regardless as to whether or not their state has adopted the latest codes or rules.

The second video will be geared toward the general public, inspectors, realtors, homeowners, and others who are involved with a home that currently has a home elevator. This video would show them what to look for (“old 3/5”) and direct them to NAEC or encourage them to contact a local elevator contractor if they are unsure as to what to do as well as to learn more about cost effective modifications or repairs the contractor can offer to ensure their equipment meets current safety code or standards.

The committee set the goal of filming the raw footage for the videos by the end of December 2019, and final, edited versions to be ready for review by the committee meeting at the 2020 NAEC Spring Conference in Charleston.

Member Site Visits: New York & MarylandNAEC continues to be committed in building relationships with our members. Your new Executive Director has been busy visiting members during her travels. Recently, Alesa was in the New York City area, and spent a few days meeting with members and touring members’ facilities.

In addition to making a stop at President Don Gelestino’s office at Champion Elevator, Alesa had the pleasure of touring Columbia Elevator’s Bridgeport, CT, facilities with L.J. Blaiotta. He also showed her their original factory building location in Port Chester and served as her personal tour guide.

Alesa was able to spend time with Jim Duffy at Richmond Elevator on Staten Island, then traveled to Hauppauge to meet with Nick Dalvano and Brie Lattman of All-Ways

Alesa and L.J. visit Columbia Elevator facility.

Elevator, and Nat Alcamo of Elevator Systems in Garden City. She also enjoyed a personal tour of D & D Elevator’s impressive Elevator Learning Center in Yonkers.

In Pelham, she visited with Chip and David Nyborg of Tri-State Elevator and Tri-Lok Manufacturing, and actually went on a job site with Jaime Mendes of Tri-State Elevator to view a LULA elevator installation. What a treat!

It was a busy few days, and very interesting! She looks forward to being back in the New York area to visit some of the members she missed, as well as getting out on the road to other parts of the country.

You might ask, where in the world is Alesa McArthur? Well, the next trip was to Maryland where she spent an enlightening day visiting with Pete Meeks and David Smarte in Salisbury, learning all about Delaware Elevator. In Owings Mills, she toured Elevator Safety Company (ELSCO) with Doug Hamilton, III and Paul Kreutzwiser learning about their products.

Be on the lookout for a visit to your area soon!

Koch Elevator has been providing elevator services to the greater Northern Nevada and North Eastern California area since 2002. After starting Koch Electric Co. in early 2002, Mike Koch decided to take a leap forward and start his own independent elevator company. Having worked primarily for independent elevator companies since 1985, Mike was confident

in his abilities to own and operate his own company. In November 2002, Koch Elevator was founded and operated from a home office. In 2005, the modernization segment of the business skyrocketed and it was clear that a bigger space was needed. Fast forward to today, and you will find Koch Elevator’s 20 employees active with maintenance, modernizations, commercial repairs, new installs, residential elevators and stair chairs.

One of Koch’s customers is Reno’s local hospital. The largest private account in Northern Nevada with over 80 units, Koch Elevator has been maintaining, servicing, and modernizing the hospital for the last 10 years. This contract, along with the maintenance contract for the local university, and several other local buildings keeps Koch Elevator at the top of the market. Koch Elevator has grown to become the largest independent elevator company in Northern Nevada by always falling back on their best practices of answering the phone (usually on the first ring), and following the golden rule of treating the customer how they would want to be treated. Koch Elevator prides themselves on the fact that their office employee’s don’t have voicemails simply because there will always be a person in the office to answer calls.

Koch Elevator has always been family owned and operated. Over the years, Mike has stuck by his original plan of having a family business, His wife, Lisa, joined the business in

2004, and his daughter-in-law, Rachel, in 2018. Rachel is the Administrative Assistant and brings the office mascot, Bucky Koch, with her to brighten everyone’s day.

Mike’s son, Nick, who was brought on to the team in April 2013, plays a central role in the company as a whole. Nick also spearheads all things Sales and Management related to the Residential side of the business.

Koch Elevator is proud to be a member of the IUEC Local 8. At Koch Elevator educating their team is effortless because they are close knit. Mike has an open door policy and welcomes input and questions from his employees without judgment. Mike and Lisa feel very fortunate in the fact that they have the best mechanics and helpers the industry has to offer. In addition to having weekly safety meetings and the annual Christmas parties, it is not uncommon to find Koch Elevator employees enjoying barbeques at the office and going to baseball games together after a great work week. Koch Elevator has become a cornerstone of the elevator industry in the Reno/Sparks area and is looking forward to many more great years to come.
