General Orders #1
Series 2016-2017 908 Washington Street
September 2016 ___________ ____________ Columbus, IN 47201
My Sisters,
As I start this journey as your National President, I am humbled by the confidence you have shown by electing
me. I am excited and nervous at the same time about the job ahead of me and wonder sometimes if I will be
able to fill the shoes that I have stepped into. There have been some awesome ladies as President of this
organization and I intend to do them proud as I represent the Daughters of Union Veterans in my travels this
coming year.
I hope everyone had a wonderful time at the 126th Convention in Springfield, IL as we celebrated the 150th
Anniversary of the founding of the Grand Army of the Republic. I would personally like to thank the
Department of Illinois for the fantastic job they did and everyone involved during our convention in honoring
Mr. Benjamin Franklin Stephenson, founder of the GAR. On Saturday, July 23rd, we had the dedication of the
Dr. Benjamin Franklin Stephenson Library at Headquarters. Music by the 10th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry
Regiment Band and refreshments were enjoyed by all in attendance on this very hot summer day.
I would like to thank my installing officers and especially my family for being there for me at my installation
as National President. There were a lot of tears shed that day, from my father as he escorted me to my station
and my mother who installed me and then both my daughters, and my brother. It got to the point I couldn’t
look at any of them. Love you bunches, Ernie & Barbara Stone, Darryl & Colleen Stone, Mike, Shelly, Dusti,
Willow and Iris Rynerson, you are my world.
I have three Civil War ancestors; my paternal ancestor is James Logan Stone who served with the 32nd
Kentucky Infantry Company D, and my maternal ancestors are Noah Bisel and Simon P. Waltz, both of whom
interestingly served in the 140th Indiana Regiment Company D.
At this time, I would like to remind all Department and Detached Tent Presidents to please email me their
Department Convention and/or meeting dates and locations. I look forward to meeting my sisters, renewing
friendships and making memories!
Remember the National website, www.duvcw.org, username and password will change on October 1st. Please
check the website often as our webmaster updates it frequently.
I would like to personally invite each of you to my convention in Grand Rapids, Michigan, July 26-30, 2017,
at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. We are going to have an awesome time. The Michigan ladies love to have fun and
are planning a great convention.
Again, I want to thank you for the trust and confidence you have placed in me. I look forward to representing
the Daughters of Union Veterans of Civil War.
In Fraternity, Charity & Loyalty,
Jan Stone Rynerson
National President

Board of Trustees Report
The Board of Trustees has continued to serve the organization during the 2015-2016 year. The Board of Trustees meets two times a year, in September, and April. With the 2015 National Convention being so close (St. Louis), we were able to meet three times. The Museum is now maintaining regular hours and is open 5 days a week; closed on Sunday and Monday. The Library is also open 5 days a week; by appointment only.
Museum Update: One issue facing the Board was the inability to replace the content of the glass cases and displays yearly; a huge task that is too difficult to achieve within the allotted time constraints. The decision was made to have one or more unique exhibits and change our glass cases as needed. One of our first exhibits is a Civil War nurses display, which includes original nurse corps medals, photographs of nurses, and ambulance conveyance displays using Harper’s Weekly graphics from wagons to ships. Also displayed is a Civil War hospital bed’s headboard, donated by Barbara Mondt. Photographs of USCT and Buffalo soldiers were added to an existing exhibit. Our ceremonial wreaths used, e.g. at Death Day, were refurbished by Natalie Kessler, Illinois. Vintage red, white and blue bunting was donated by Carole Morton, PNP. Sharon Corum, Illinois, made black bunting for both the Museum and Library to be used, for example, during Death Day week. A book truck/trolley was donated so that pre-owned Civil War books would be available for visitors to purchase. Security straps were placed as a warning at the head of the stairs to the Museum basement. We increased our exterior security with the addition of new motion detectors. The flag pole was repaired and the front porch sign was replaced. As for the sidewalk in front of the Museum, the city replaced it. The exterior of the building and portions of the interior were in much needed repair. One of our sisters, who wishes to remain anonymous, provided funds to paint and repair our Museum. The exterior building was painted in its entirety. This included changing the color of the cinder block from burgundy to light beige. The pillars, trim and the cupola on the roof were also painted white. The entrance to the rear of the building from the parking entrance was also painted white and the outdoor carpet replaced. Additionally, the entire Museum parking asphalt was slurried, including the rear driveway of the Library. During the renovation, it became apparent that the windows in the Museum needed to be replaced, and indeed, we proceeded to replace every window. In addition, new interior blinds were added. Lastly, a new digital thermostat was added to better control the HVAC. Library and Research Center Update: We have received many books and artifacts from Sue Mize, Michigan, Carole Morton, PNP, California, Ozzie Thompson, PNP, Minnesota, Helen Barber, California and Barbara Mondt, California. Over 200 hardback books, close to 500 digitized books and maps and numerous relics were accessioned and secured. One especially unique item received was a McClellan saddle. A saddle mount was built and the saddle is now on displayed in the Museum. A library table was built and four (4) chairs purchased from funds provided by the Department of Michigan in honor of their late Department President, Sandy Longpre. A dedication plaque was also placed, in her honor, on the table. The trellis/lattice attached to the Library building in the Memory Garden was in peril of falling and was removed for safety reasons. An additional twenty-seven (27) memorial bricks were placed in the garden. A database was created to keep track of the brick purchasers and the physical location of each brick in the garden. The sidewalk in front of Library was repaired and/or replaced by the city. Front porch drains were added due to potential damage during the wet/winter seasons. The fence that surrounds the Memory Garden was power washed and stained on both sides.

In the last 48 hours, on July 23, the Library and Research Center was dedicated to Dr. Benjamin Franklin Stephenson, founder of the Grand Army of the Republic. Heretofore, it will be referred to as the Stephenson Library and Research Center; Stephenson Library for short. Red, white and blue bunting was used to decorate the front porch railing. The 10th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry Regiment Band members performed the simultaneous raising of the Colors, a U.S. flag flown over the Illinois State capitol, Springfield and a Michigan flag flown over Michigan’s State capitol, Lansing. The 10th also entertained the crowd with Civil War music. Over 100 people joined us as a tribute was made to Dr. Stephenson and the Grand Army of the Republic. An attractive sign, concealed by a unique 47-circle star flag, was unveiled by Sally Redinger, National President and Carole Morton, Board of Trustees Chair, showing an image of Dr. Stephenson. A second, smaller Stephenson Library sign was added later and placed over the front porch. Other Events: During Death Day week (April 15th), celebrating the life and death of Abraham Lincoln, the Museum held a 2-day Open House. On temporary display, was Lincoln’s horse, Old Bob’s replica cooler that was worn during the reenactment of Lincoln’s Funeral Procession and copies of the Ordinances issued by the City of Springfield during the 1865 event. Also on display were two (2) sets of sashes and cockades worn in the Funeral Procession, which were donated by Carole Morton, PNP. Numerous photographs of the period, the Springfield hearse, assassination conspirators, Mary Todd Lincoln and more, plus photographs of the disinterment of Lincoln’s coffin from his tomb in 1910 were displayed. Docents Wanted. Our Museum is a window into the life and times of our veterans during and after the Civil War. Just one day a week or one day a month is all it takes to belong to a wonderful group of people who all share the same love of history. There are so many different opportunities to participate in our history and to share with others. Volunteers Wanted. We have several ongoing projects where you can help. Most would require you to live in Springfield or nearby, while other projects could be worked on at home. Cash and artifact donations are critical in keeping our beautiful Museum and Library thriving. The monies received from the Headquarters Assessment Fees, as a portion of the membership dues you pay, keep the lights on. The content of the Museum and Library is the lifeline: to perpetuate the memories of our ancestral fathers who served in the Civil War; to honor their loyalty and unselfish sacrifices to preserve the Union; and to keep alive the memory of those who participated. Most donations are tax deductible. The Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-1865 is a 501(c)(3) organization and is approved by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service as an organization to which tax deductible gifts can be made pursuant to Section 170 of the Internal Revenue Code. If you are interested in participating in any of the above, please let us know. The Board wishes to extend its gratitude and appreciation to everyone who has given us assistance during this past year. We are looking forward to another year of your generous and continued support to “Keep green the memory.” In Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty,
The DUVCW Board of Trustees:
Carole Morton, PNP and Chairman July Frohm, PNP, Vice Chairman Ozzie Thompson, PNP Janet Uribe, PDP, Secretary Linda Opstad, PDP Ellen Higgins, Council Member #1 Sally Redinger, National President

duvs SCHOLARSHIP 2016 WINNERS
Lydia Placht, Dorothea Dix, Tent 42, IA
Virginia Matsumoto – Elizabeth Van Lew,
Detached Tent 1, VA
CONGRATULATIONS LADIES!
Please watch for some changes to the duvs
scholarship form that will soon be posted on the
national website. One of these changes asks for
the date of initiation of the applicant, since one
of the scholarship requirements is that the
applicant be an active member for at least two
years. Another asks for the applicant’s tent name,
number and state. This new requirement is being
added because we have ladies applying, and
sadly, being turned down, because they are not
members. A final change is adding a tent
president signature and date to help prove that
the applicant has been an active member of that
tent for at least two years.
Ask the high school seniors in your tents to
apply. We can give out up to four $250
scholarships per year, and the last two years we
have only given out two per year. We want to
help our young ladies succeed!!
I also want to thank the parents/grandparents
who brought their girls to the national
convention this year. I really enjoyed working
with all of them. I hope we can add some new
girls next year to help with our projects, do some
crafts, serve and entertain at the breakfast, and
enjoy meeting other girls with similar interests. I
look forward to seeing you there!
In Fraternity, Charity, and Loyalty,
Daryl Reed, duvs Chairman
duvs PROJECT
I am asking for help from all the members out
there. If you know of a Real Daughter that has
passed, especially if she had been a member of
your tent, please send me any information you
have on her so that I can include her story in the
Real Daughter’s Project that the duvs have been
working on for the last several years. This is one
of our big fundraisers at the Granddaughters’
Breakfast at the National Convention and goes
towards the duvs scholarship fund. Thanks to all
who contribute information or purchase our
books! On another note, I am looking for one of
the 2013 Real Daughter’s Project books. If you
have one to donate or sell, please call or email
me. I have also received a suggestion to have a
set of books for the Real Daughter chairman to
have and pass on to her successor. If you have
any that you would be willing to donate, please
contact Real Daughter chairman, Sherry Brady.
Thank you for all your help, ladies!
In Fraternity, Charity, and Loyalty,

GALLAUDET
SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The Committee would like to thank all of our
Sisters for their generous donations, especially to
Sister PNP Sally Redinger for her Presidents
Project for the scholarship fund. The pins were
great! The Committee fund raiser for the clothing
materials and accessories went well as did the
smaller basket. If you would like to do it again next
year please let us know.
April was our time to go to GALLAUDET
University to present the Abraham Lincoln
Scholarship Award to two students. This year the
first award was given to Marvin T. Miller for “The
Barnard Brothers and the Civil War”. Second
award went to Malik Amann for “The Impact of
Technology from the American Civil War”.
This scholarship has been given by the Daughters
for more than 25 years and we are the only outside
organization that presents an award on this day.
The other awards are all given by the school and its
organizations within the university. The award
that the Daughters give has helped the students of
GALLAUDET University with their financial
burdens of books, special needs, and other items
that they might need.
Again, the Committee would like for our Sisters to
know the requirements for this award. A student
must write a short essay and it has been requested
that it should be regarding the Civil War. We have
had a wonderful response with our request. The
students have researched into the Civil War in so
many ways. Our last essay by Marvin was about
how the deaf community played its role in the Civil
War. In the past the students of GU have
researched into the Civil War to find a subject or
subjects to write about. These students have
proved to be amazing when choosing their subjects
for the essays.
Just think, if every Sister gave just one dollar how
much it would help. We are asking again to keep
the donations coming for the Gallaudet
Scholarship Fund. We cannot begin to explain how
appreciative the students are to have this
scholarship award.
Donation checks are to be made out to

National Junior Vice President
Thank you for the honor of representing you as
the 2016-17 National Junior Vice President. The
most important responsibility of a Junior Vice
President at every level, National, Department,
Tent and Detached Tent, is to raise funds in
support of our National Service Academy Awards
program. Thanks to your contributions, each year
an award is presented by our organization at the
following academies:
United States Military Academy (USMA),
West Point, New York; founded in 1802.
United States Naval Academy (USNA),
Annapolis, Maryland; founded in 1845.
United States Coast Guard Academy
(USCGA), New London, Connecticut; founded
in 1876. (Previously known as the Revenue
Cutter Service.)
United States Merchant Marine Academy
(USMMA), Kings Point, New York; founded
in 1942.
With the exception of the USMMA, all of these
Military units were active during the Civil War.
At that time, the United States Coast Guard was
known as the Revenue Cutter Service which
participated in the battle and evacuation of Ft.
Sumner. U.S. Naval blockades were a crucial
part in the Union Victory, and Civil War Generals
Sherman, Grant and more were West Point
graduates. Your donation to this fund continues
to Keep Green the memory of the Boys in Blue,
and continues our commitment to honor the brave
men and women of today’s armed services.
Please make the United States Service Academy
Awards part of your fundraising efforts during the
coming year. Please send your donation to
National Treasurer Susan Nitzel, P.O. Box 1176,
Ft. Morgan, CO 80701-1176 with the notation
“U.S. Service Academy Awards Fund.”
Our organization is honored to be asked to
participate in these award ceremonies which
acknowledge the commitment and
accomplishments of the young men and women
who choose to defend our Country through
service in the armed forces. Your generous
contributions make it possible for us to
participate. Thank you!

Vibes from the VAVS Rep
Thank you to all the Departments and Detached
Tents that sent reports for the annual meeting.
After collating the forms, the results showed
we’ve done a wonderful job donating both time
and funds to the various VA facilities across the
country. A very special thank you to Florence
Mayer, Department of Ohio, for volunteering over
15,000 hours during the last 21 years. She didn't
start volunteering until she was almost 70
years of age.
Please be sure that only Federal VA facilities are
included when sending in the VAVS Report. A
few Departments included state homes and
hospitals, so the numbers had to be corrected. If
you are not sure whether the facility is Federal or
State, please contact me before writing your
report. I have a complete list of the Federally-
funded VA hospitals, clinics, and other facilities.
We need 7 more volunteers to attain voting status
on the VAVS-NAC Committee. Volunteers must
attend the quarterly VAVS meetings along with
donating time at the facility if possible. There are
positions available that do not include one-on-one
contact with the residents. I can supply the name
of the Volunteer Coordinator at the facility who
can tell you what areas need volunteers. Let's do
our best to become a voting member of this
important committee!!
Thanks!!

National President’s Project
Archival Supplies & Materials for the Preservation,
Protection & Restoration of our Civil War Artifacts
After a lot of consideration, I have decided my project will be for the archival
supplies needed at the Museum to preserve, protect and restore our treasured
artifacts. There are so many materials I can’t begin to name them all, but these are
a few of the needed supplies: acid free tissue paper, display boxes for medals,
banners and pictures. These boxes need to be all shapes and sizes. We also need
sewing labels for some of the clothing, flags, banners and quilts we have received.
If any Department, Tent or Individual would like to “Adopt an Artifact”, please
contact me. I hope to have a list of Objet d’art artifacts in the next GO with photos
and details of the estimated cost of restoration.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR FILING 990N
I am writing to you with instructions on how to
complete your Tent or Department Annual 990N
filing requirement with the Internal Revenue
Service (IRS).
First a little background. The IRS requires certain
organizations, such as the Daughters of Union
Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-1865 to file a
990N each year. If your Tent or Department has
annual gross receipts of under $50,000 you must
file. Our National Organization has asked each
Treasurer to complete the form. Form 990N must
be completed and filed electronically. There is no
paper form.
In February, the Form 990N electronic filing
system was moved from the Urban Institute’s
website to the IRS website. All filers must register
with the IRS prior to filing this year’s Form 990N.
This is to be a one-time registration and you won’t
be asked to register again when filing next year.
It is recommend that you write down your new
user name and password. It is a good idea to write
it in your check book along with your EIN.
The Form 990N is due every year by the 15th
day
of the 5th
month after the close of your tax year.
Most of our Tents and Departments have a closing
date of August 31st. This means that you must file
your 990N postcard between September 1st and
January 15th
. It is highly recommended that you do
not wait until the last minute. Please consider
taking care of this important requirement in
October of each year.
The website link is very long and can easily be
entered incorrectly in your web browser.
Therefore the best way to enter the website is to:
1. Enter www.irs.gov in your browser
2. In the search box in the upper right hand
corner type 990N and click the magnifying
glass directly to the right of the box.
3. On this next page you will see “Top
Recommendations” then just below that
you will see
Form 990-N (e-Postcard) https://www.irs.gov/charities-non-
profits/annual-electronic-filing-
requirement-for-small-exempt-
organizations-form-990-n-e-postcard
4. Click on this link
5. On the next page you will see (in red)
“How to File”
6. Just below that in the paragraph you will
see (in blue)
Form 990-N Electronic Filing System (e-
Postcard).
7. Click on this link
8. You will now see two choices “First Time
Users” or “Returning Users”
9. Most of you are “Returning Users”
however since the change over from the
Urban Institute to the IRS, you need to
registrar with the IRS. Follow the
directions for First Time Users.
10. If you get a message that email is already
already on file, and if you have forgotten
your user name and or password, use the
“forgotten” button to request your user
name and or password. They will now send
an email, this could take several minutes.
11. Once registered, enter your user name and
password, you can now proceed.
12. On the next screen you will see
“Electronically file your Form 990-N (e-
Postcard)” with two choices.

GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC PROJECT
Over the past two years, while we gathered data and photographs from you on your GAR ancestors, many of you asked how we were going to use or present the information. The “how” was answered at the 2016 National Convention. During the “Tribute to Dr. Benjamin Franklin Stephenson,” the Grand Army of the Republic Ancestor Project was unveiled as “Our GAR Ancestor Gallery,” a website. A glimpse of that site and its content was revealed. The website, which is still in development, contains the names of our GAR ancestors, their photographs, military service, GAR postx and the descendant names provided with each entry. Only those verified entries received on or before February 1, 2016 were included. The launch time and availability of “Our Gallery” will be announced on the National website’s banner. “Our Gallery” is a living entity and will continue to evolve and mature when we reopen the site for additional Grand Army of the Republic ancestors.
Yours in Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty, Carole Morton, PNP

Windstorm Damages Trees at Newly Dedicated Library
Late Sunday night, July 24 through the early morning of Monday, July 25, a viciously windy, lightening-filled rain storm passed through Springfield. We were initially notified that the lightening had hit our over 80-year-old silver maple tree which stood in front of our Library, which only 36 hours earlier had been dedicated to Dr. Benjamin Franklin Stephenson. It was later determined that winds of 60-75 mph toppled and damaged the trees.
The silver maple tree stood well over 90 feet. Approximately 25 to 30 feet of the tree broke off, and the debris fell into our front yard and into the street.
When the silver maple tree broke away, it landed on a second tree, a callery pear, crushing it. In the Memory Garden, a third tree, a smaller maple (shown below), split in two taking down the electrical power and telephone lines and slightly damaging the fence and the Library’s rain gutter.
The Library was a hot zone for some time before the electrical company arrived to temporarily replace the lines and restore the power. Thank goodness, no one was there when this happened.
We knew immediately that the crushed and splintered trees had to be removed, but it was our hope that the silver maple could be saved. An arborist was brought in to examine not only the damaged trees, but the remaining trees as well. Unfortunately, the silver maple was beyond help; the tree showed signs of rotting from within and is now unstable, and it needs to be removed before it falls on the Library or the neighboring house. It was also discovered that several of the remaining trees needed to be stabilized.
The removal of the initial debris cost $800. To remove the silver maple, the two damaged trees and to stabilize the remaining trees will cost $4,200. This does not include the cost of stump grinding for the silver maple and callery pear. The maple stump in the Memory Garden does not have to be removed. An estimate of an additional $1,200 is needed for the stump grinding.
Our insurance company inspected the damage. Unfortunately, the damages to the trees are not covered and the structural damage was less than our deductible.
The storm and its devastation was never anticipated, and consequently, the resulting expense to remove the trees is not covered by our budget.
We are striving to maintain the Library and Museum to be a continued source of pride to each and every one of our members. To that end, a “Trees” fund has already been established to receive donations to help defray the cost of the trees. To date, we have received $500.
Please make your check payable to “DUVCW” and in the memo line write “Trees” and mail your check to:

Our Grand Army of the Republic’s Stain Glass Window
At the 82nd National Convention a large stained glass panel of the Grand Army of the Republic badge from a Maine GAR Memorial Hall was offered to the organization by Ruth Jordan, PNP. Sister Ruth and her husband Carl transported the window on top of their station wagon from Maine to Springfield, Illinois. The window came from the Bosworth Post 2, Portland, Maine. The window was in very poor condition and continued to deteriorate over the years. Lesley Dean, PNP, while National President, President’s Project was to raise funds for the stain glass window to be restored. Later, Barbara Stone, PNP, during her presidency also adopted the stain glass window as a project. A very costly process, the Board of Trustees under Ozzie Thompson, PNP, bit the bullet and using their funds made the restoration a reality. The restored stain glass panel resides in a special backlit cabinet that shows off the extraordinary colors of the stain glass. At the bottom of the panel one sees the name O. R. LeGrow, named for Orin Rand LeGrow. LeGrow was born in Windham, Maine, September 22, 1835, and enlisted as a Private in the 7th Battery, on December 22, 1863. He mustered out as a Corporal. LeGrow, a successful lumber dealer, civic leader and a member of the GAR Bosworth Post 2, died on May 25, 1889 at the age of 53. He was honored by his comrades by the placement of this window in the Post. We too continue to honor LeGrow and all GAR members with the restoration of this window, as so few exist today. With the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Grand Army of the Republic this year, we wanted to honor Sisters Lesley and Barbara by placing their names on a special brass plaque to be mounted on the cabinet that houses this gorgeous piece of history. We also want to offer each of you an opportunity to have your name engraved on this brass plaque by making one of the following donations to the Board’s ongoing restoration fund. There are four (4) levels of recognition for the brass plaque:
Platinum - $1,000.00 and more Gold - $750.00 to $999.99 Silver - $500.00 to $749.99 Bronze - $250.00-$499.99
The cutoff date for contributions for the brass
plaque has been extended to December 31, 2016.
Be sure to provide your name as you want it to appear on the plaque. Any and all contributions would be most appreciated. Please make your check payable to “DUVCW” and in the memo line write “Stain Glass” and mail your check to:

Minié Ball
The French army officer Claude-Etienne Minié invented the bullet that would bear his name in 1849.
The Minié bullet, a cylindrical bullet with a hollow base that expanded when fired, proved lethally
accurate over relatively long distances, and was soon used to devastating effect by the British army
against Russian forces during the Crimean War. After the outbreak of the American Civil War in
1861, both Union and Confederate soldiers used the “minnie” bullet (as they called it) in their
muzzle-loading rifles. The French army officer Claude-Etienne Minié was not the first to come up
with the design of a bullet that expanded when fired, but he simplified and improved on earlier
designs–including those developed by Britain’s Captain John Norton (1818) and William Greener
(1836)–to create his namesake bullet in 1849. Cylindrical in shape, with a conical point and a hollow
base containing an iron plug, the Minié bullet was smaller than the diameter of a rifle barrel, and
could be easily loaded, even when the rifle became dirty.
In the early 1850s, James Burton of the U.S. Armory at Harper’s Ferry, Virginia, improved further on
the Minié bullet by eliminating the need for the iron plug and making it easier and cheaper to mass-
produce. It was adapted for use by the U.S. military in 1855. During the Civil War (1861-65), the
basic firearm carried by both Union and Confederate troops was the rifle-musket and the Minié ball.
The federal armory in Springfield, Massachusetts, produced a particularly effective rifle-musket that
had a range of around 250 yards; some 2 million Springfield rifles were produced during the war.
The long-range accuracy of the Minié ball meant that the traditional model of warfare, when infantry
and cavalry assaults could be successful, was over. Soldiers armed with a minié-loaded rifle could
hide behind trees or blockades and take down approaching forces before they could get close enough
to cause any damage. Weapons of an earlier age, such as the bayonet, became almost obsolete in this
new kind of warfare, and the role of cavalry and field artillery was greatly reduced. Casualty figures
for the American Civil War reached staggering proportions, with more than 200,000 soldiers killed
and more than 400,000 wounded. The rifle-musket and the Minié bullet are thought to account for
around 90 percent of these casualties.

SUMMER WITH MARGARET WARNER WOOD ARIZONA DETACHED TENT #1
Tent members did DUVCW proud on Memorial Day by attending events throughout the state. At two of
these events members took an active part in the services. For the
12th year our Tent joined over 75 other organizations in the
Wreath Laying Ceremony which is part of the Remembrance
Service held at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in
Phoenix. Our Tent also participated in the celebrations held at
the Pioneer & Military Memorial Park Phoenix where many vet-
erans of the Civil War are buried. We laid two wreaths there, one
of which was on behalf of the Camp Picacho Peak Auxiliary,
ASUVCW. Our many thanks to PTP Verna Maleski who created
all of the wreaths used in these two ceremonies.

the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona.
June found us looking forward to the visit of National
President Sally Redinger and her sister, Sue Liddie, Na-
tional Assistant Treasurer I. What a great time we all had
and how much we all enjoyed getting to know these two
wonderful ladies. Twenty-four of our Arizona Sisters
came to the luncheon to honor our guests. We were also
joined by Brother Jerry Bloom, Commander of Camp Pi-
cacho Peak SUVCW.

desert table provided by our Events Chairman, Sister
Joyce Eller.
(photo right) Seven (a record number for our
Arizona Tent) of us and two spouses headed
to Springfield, Illinois in July for the National
Convention. We attended all the sessions. We
watched with pride as two of our members,
one of them a duv, were initiated. Here we are
enjoying one of the banquets. We also took
time to see Lincoln’s Home, Tomb, Museum,
and New Salem Village. We enjoyed the bus
trip to Petersburg to see the grave site of Dr.
Benjamin F. Stephenson, founder of the
G.A.R. We were also invited to tour the home the G.A.R. provided for his wife and children after Dr. Ste-
phenson’s death. We are so proud of Sister Verna Maleski and her election to the Grand Army of the Re-
public Living Memorial Scholarship Committee. What a super experience we had in Springfield. Grand
Rapids, here we come!
Our last summer event was our 4th annual joint meeting with Camp Picacho Peak #1 SUVCW De-
partment of the Southwest. We had a wonderful time as we always do with the Sons and the program on
Civil War newspapers given by Brother David Kampf was excellent. (article submitted by Barbara Metzger)

CLARA BARTON TENT 95, CA
HEADSTONE REDEDICATION FOR PVT. WILLIAM PAINTER
William Painter, great-grandfather of Sister Virginia Price, and great-great-grandfather of Sisters Gail
Price and Leslie Sutton who are all charter members of Clara Barton Tent #95. At the August 2015 Tent
meeting, these Sisters presented a detailed account of William’s life. They shared photos as well as
several letters and poems he wrote to family members from the battlefields. Sisters Virginia and Leslie
traveled to Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak, Iowa to attend the Headstone Rededication Ceremony for their
patriot ancestor on Veterans Day, November 11, 2015.
Although William Painter was not a young man when
the Civil War began, he enlisted August 9, 1862. He
mustered in at Council Bluffs, Iowa on November 8th
as
Private into Company “H” 29th Regiment, Iowa
Volunteer Infantry.
After the war ended, he mustered out and returned to
his home in September 1865. In 1870, he and his wife
moved their family to Red Oak, Iowa where he owned
and operated a hardware store for 14 years before his
death on January 1, 1886.
A fairly recent photo of William’s military headstone shows a Grand Army of the Republic (GAR)
medallion. His obituary in the “Red Oak Sun” newspaper stated his funeral was conducted by Post #57 of
the GAR. In an attempt to prove William’s membership in the GAR prior to their Tent meeting
presentation August 2015, Leslie contacted Mr. Danny Krock, Department Commander, Iowa
Department, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) for verification. Unfortunately, per
SUVCW’s research, it appeared that William was not a member. Commander Krock graciously offered
to honor Pvt. Painter for his military service by rededicating his military headstone.
On November 11, 2015, a rededication ceremony was conducted by Commander Krock, seven uniformed
members from Company “B,” 10th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Sons of Veterans Reserve (SVR)
and two women from the Kinsman Camp Auxiliary. The ceremony began at 2:30pm with Commander
Krock acknowledging the patriots who laid down their lives for our country. The Chaplain of the
SUVCW invoked the divine blessing followed by Sister Leslie reading William’s biography.
One of the attending soldiers removed a cloth cover revealing the military headstone of Pvt. William
Painter which had recently been cleaned by members of the SUVCW. Another soldier with a musket with
fixed bayonet stood guard behind William’s headstone and remained there for the duration of the
ceremony. One by one, the participants approached the graveside to place various items of significance at
the headstone and explained the meaning of each.
Afterwards, Commander Krock and one of the soldiers ceremoniously unfolded a United States flag.
Once opened to full size they held it high with their heads bowed in reverence as though in preparation to
drape it over a casket. After a short pause they refolded the flag into a traditional triangle. It was
presented to Sister Virginia by Commander Krock, who then saluted.
At the close of the ceremony a touching tribute was provided by a bugler sounding “Taps” as members of
the SUVCW saluted. After the benediction by the Chaplain, Commander Krock brought the ceremony to
its final close. (Article submitted by Gage Hewes)

BARRINGTON HALL TOUR SUPPORTS US SERVICE ACADEMY CADETS
May 17, 2016 was an extraordinary day at
Barrington Hall, Roswell, GA. Barrington Hall
(circa 1842), former home of Barrington and
Catherine King, is a historic museum owned by the
City of Roswell that provides tours daily for the
public. A special tour of the antebellum house and
gardens was arranged for the Daughters of Union
Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-1865 (DUVCW),
Amanda Stokes Tent #2. This particular tour
raised funds for the United States Service
Academy Awards to the Outstanding Graduating
Cadet during their Graduation Award Ceremony.
Paulette Snoby, Tent Jr. Vice President, asked the
Historic Site Coordinator Robert Winebarger about
supporting this worthy cause. Mr. Winebarger was more than pleased to provide meeting space and
docents to lead the tour of the house and gardens. Tent President Jill Webster conducted the regular
monthly meeting on the portico which was followed by lunch. Members enjoyed the house tour stories
with emphasis on the Union occupation of Roswell in 1864, burning of the mills, and the arrest and
deportation of the millworkers by General Kenner Garrard. (Article and photo submitted by Paulette Snoby)

anniversary of the Battle of Utoy Creek. Sister Sarah Meyer, Department of GA President, was especially
gratified to see this battle site marked since her ancestor John Glossinger participated in the battle in 1864.
The marking took place at present day Cascade Nature Preserve. This site is one of the few remaining
Civil War sites which still contain remnants of battle lines and fortifications. The marker notes the gallant
attacks of the Union forces under Gen. Schofield upon Confederate entrenchments outside city of Atlanta.
A total of 852 loyal men lost their lives in an attempt to break through the Atlanta defenses in 1864.
US Army Lt. Colonel J. Perry Bennett, Historian and Past Commander of the SUVCW of James B.
McPherson Camp #1 and brothers Earl Zeckman and Ray Wozniak led a ten-year effort to raise the funds
for the beautiful two sided marker to honor the Second and Third Divisions of the 23rd
Army Corp.
Numerous groups contributed to the realization of this project and include the Georgia Civil War
Commission that had two representatives present. Also attending were Bill Erquitt, former curator of the
Atlanta Historical Society, and City Councilman Michael Julian Bond. Councilman Bond gave an
eloquent speech about the relevance of this Civil War battle to present day Atlanta. A SUVCW color
guard and musicians participated in the marking with forty history lovers in attendance. (Article and photos

EVA GRAY TENT 2, MI
SISTERS JOIN SUVCW IN HEADSTONE DEDICATION
June 12, 2016 was a beautiful, sunny day with a light breeze when members
of Austin Blair Camp 7 SUVCW and Eva Gray Tent 2 DUVCW met at
Ashland Cemetery in Grant, MI to dedicate a headstone for Pvt. John Palmer
Barnum of Co. E 18th Mich. V.I. His headstone was placed in the Barnum
family plot where after 150 years he can be honored and remembered by the
Barnum family.
Pvt. Barnum was born in 1838 in Lenawee County Michigan. Barnum's unit
served in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama. He and about 200 men from
his unit were sent to Athens, Alabama to reinforce the garrison there. While
there, the entire command was captured, with many being wounded or killed.
The rest were sent to Confederate prisons until the end of the war. The
Sultana was to be their ride to Camp Chase in Ohio. Although being built to
carry 376 persons, over 2,200 men were put on the ship. Near Memphis a
faulty boiler exploded and about 1,700 persons were killed or drowned
following the explosion. Pvt. John Barnum was numbered among the dead.
Brother Howard Barnum Lloyd PCC of Austin Blair Camp 7 in Jackson
organized the event for his great-great-uncle assisted by members of Austin
Blair Camp 7 Jackson, 14th Michigan Rifles SVR, Benjamin Pritchard Camp
20 Kalamazoo, and Robert Finch Camp 14 in Traverse City.
Sister Patty Galloway, Eva Gray 2 Chaplain, laid a white rose on the
headstone, and Sister Wenda Fore, Eva Gray 2 President, read the poem,
"When the Boys in Blue are Gone." Also attending the dedication from Tent
2 were Cheryl Bignall, Claudia Wojciakowski, and Judy Corrigan.
Following the dedication, Howard and June Lloyd treated the family and

EVA GRAY TENT 2 MICHIGAN TAKES SUMMER “ROAD TRIP”
As is the custom each year to leave the meeting place in the summer to visit a place of interest, members
of Eva Gray Tent 2, Department of Michigan met for lunch and toured the Rockford Historical Museum.
They were met by Museum Director Al Pratt who welcomed the group.
One of the items of special interest was a newly installed bronze statue, a plaque giving the details of
heroism, and a beautiful garden outside the museum honoring Rockford native John Sjorgren, a WWII
medal-of-honor recipient. He was in the campaign to recapture the Philippines from Japanese forces in
1945. Later he served in the Michigan National Guard with the rank of First Lieutenant and served later in
the Korean War. Inside the museum was a display featuring his medal as well as news articles, and a
photo of John receiving the medal from President Harry Truman.
Another display of special interest was a large photo of
Rockford area Civil War soldiers in front of the 19th
century building where the town bank now stands. Also in
the display was a rifle belonging to another Rockford
soldier in the Civil War and his photo. For the Sisters of
Eva Gray Tent 2, it was a day well spent. (Article submitted by

PRESENTATION OF A CIVIL WAR MEMORIAL QUILT
Members of the Johana Shine Tent 96, and the SUVCW General
William Passmore Carlin Camp 25 presented a Civil War
Memorial Quilt to the Nevada Historical Society in Reno, NV on
Saturday, April 16, 2016. The concept for this quilt was from
Commander John Riggs of the SUVCW. He wanted a memorial
quilt made with the logos of the 150 year logo for NV Statehood,
the 150 year logo of the Civil War and the logos from both the
Sons and Daughters of Union Veterans. With the help of
DUVCW member Marsha Strand designing and quilting, the
quilt not only incorporates the logos, but Marsha took some ideas
of the Underground Railroad quilts squares to use around the
logos. The story is told on the label on the back of the
quilt. Commander Riggs passed away on January 12, 2016, a few
days after he had seen photos of the finished quilt and the labeling
on the back, which he approved and was pleased with the results.
20 people attended the presentation. (Submitted by Pamela Nelson,

describing his need for the Award. Kyle’s 4th great-
grandfather, Henry Orthofer, was a Corporal in the 4th New
York Cavalry.
Kyle is also an athlete who ran track at his high school and
played soccer. He will be tending goal on his college soccer

NATIONAL DUVCW AWARD
KINGS POINT MERCHANT MARINE ACADEMY
On June 17, 2016 I was honored to represent the National DUVCW on behalf of President Sally Redinger
to present the Aloysius A. Norton Award to David Giaccio-Williams of East Northport, NY at Kings
Point Merchant Marine Academy, Long Island. David, who majored in Marine Engineering and Shipyard
Management, won the award based on his paper entitled, “The Ghost of Hamlet: A Spirit of Mystery.”
Of the nearly 100 awards conferred at the
convocation, this is the only one that rewards an
achievement in the Liberal Arts. I am proud we
sponsor it, as it recognizes the need for development
of spiritual and reflective qualities in young people
and how these attributes contribute to make them
strong leaders.
After the awards ceremony, I talked with David and
his mother during lunch. I also enjoyed the company
of other award presenters, one of which was a
member of SUVCW Admiral John L. Warden Camp
#150, another a member of the SAR. (Article submitted

during the Civil War. She explained the changes the Union flag went through, as well as the different
Confederate flags used during the war. Joe Fallon, a reenactor and member of the SUVCW, C.K. Pier
Camp #1, brought his collection of museum quality uniforms to our July meeting. He discussed how and
what they were made of and the differences between Union and Confederate uniforms. Jason Reinholtz,
teacher, historian, and re-enactor shared his knowledge of his favorite subject, “food”, at our August

50 ABRAHAM LINCOLN FACTS
1. He was the only president to have a patent: he
invented a device to free steamboats that ran
aground.
2. He practiced law without a degree. Lincoln
