2019 Bishop’s Annual Appeal – Diocese of Paterson
Through the Bishop’s Annual Appeal, we recognize Jesus in the mother coming to a food pantry to feed her children, in the young man seeking treatment for chemical addiction, the disabled adult being welcomed into one of our group homes. We see Jesus in our seminarians, in our inner-city Catholic school students and in those senior priests living at our residence or needing urgent healthcare.
In-Pew Commitment Weekend – October 19/20
Over the years, more and more parishioners have chosen to support the Bishop’s Annual Appeal by making an online gift. Simply go to https://www.2019appeal.org/ and follow the instructions. You can either make a one-time gift or pledge with monthly payments made automatically for your convenience. Please make sure you select Saint Mary’s as your parish (code 2019-157). Whether it is a pledge, a one-time gift or an online donation, your support is greatly needed. Every single gift counts. Ten percent (10%) of all funds raised in the 2019 Bishop’s Annual Appeal, over and above the usual allocation to Catholic Charities, will go toward the Straight and Narrow re-building effort. Our goal as a parish is $55,000.

In this Sunday’s Gospel, Luke the Evangelist presents Jesus telling the parable of the unjust judge and suppliant widow to his disciples. Luke continues to speak about the theme of prayer, which began with the teaching of the Lord’s Prayer or the Disciples’ Prayer in Lk 11: 1-4 as a communal prayer. The parable points to the call to always keep on praying and not to give up. The context for this exhortation is the danger that Christians might become disheartened in the midst of affliction before the return of the Son of Man to deliver them (17:22–37).
The parable then addresses two important questions both to God and to his people: Will God respond to pleas for deliverance from his people? and Will his people remain faithful? The moral is that in the midst of persecution and “the already” and “not yet” God’s Kingdom, the disciples should not stop praying for God’s justice and for the return of the Son of Man that will bring justice.
As for the two characters in the parable, the conduct of the widow in her quest for justice stands out as an illustration of the prayer that will not be turned aside or silenced by anything. She is confident that her request will certainly be answered.
Luke’s interest in widows is part of his broader interest in the oppressed and despised. Widows along with orphans and aliens are members of a marginalized and often op-pressed group of society. They became the symbol of all who hunger and thirst for justice and also enjoyed God’s special protection.
The widow in the parable represents God’s chosen ones in a context that emphasizes election to serve Yahweh. These are the people who persevere in faith and prayer in the midst of hostilities while waiting for the visible consummation of the kingdom of God.
We as Christians continue praying, “Your reign come” (11:2), and “Come, Lord Jesus” (Rev 22:2); Although nothing seems to happen, at least according to our limited time perspective and narrow human understanding.
In short, the question is not whether God will respond to our prayers but whether we will respond to God and trust his faithfulness to fulfill all the promises, especially the gift of the Holy Spirit (11,13). We must endure to the end and can only endure through prayer. “Prayer feeds faith, lifts up drooping hands, and strengthens weak knees” (Heb 12:12).

RCIA 2019
Are you searching for a Church community to call your own? Do you know any adults who might be interested in joining our Franciscan community at St Mary's? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process by which adults are formally received into the Roman Catholic Church. RCIA is a journey of faith where adults are introduced to the Church and is the process by which adults who were never baptized or were baptized in another Christian tradition or those who were baptized as Catholics and never received Confirmation or Eucharist complete their Sacraments of Initiation.
RCIA Inquiry sessions are ongoing, for more information, please contact Keith Orotosky at 973.476.4398 or [email protected].

Dear Saint Mary’s Family, May the Lord give you peace! I am happy to report that since we launched our Annual Fund, we have raised $151,413 in total pledges of which we have received $139,127 so far. To date, 570 families have made a gift toward our goal of $325,000. If you have not yet contributed to this year’s Annual Fund, I urge you to do so now. I would love to count you among those donors in my next report! This annual fund is vital to the operation of the parish and our building of God’s Kingdom at Saint Mary’s. Without the income from the Annual Fund we cannot sustain the activities and ministries of our parish. If you've never made a gift to the Annual Fund, or if it's been a while since your last gift, may I ask that you consider a gift of $100 or more this year. Each year I am amazed and humbled by the commitment that you and people like you make to St. Mary's. Once again, thank you for your generosity. I hope I can count on you to support this year's Annual Fund. Thanks for all you do for us and be assured of my prayers and the prayers of all the friars for you and your loved ones. Your brother and servant in Christ, in the spirit of Francis of Assisi, Fr. Gonzalo
