THE SECOND DAY', Yonkers Won the Place of the Twenty- Seventh Convention. Binghamton. N. Y., Aug. 20.—The sec- ond day's proceedings were characterized by cheerfulness, especially on the part of the Yonker's delegation thai came here to root for the next annual conven- tion. We can not close this report without ex- pressing our gratitude to the local com- mittee and the firemen of Blnghamton for their constant efforts to make our visit enjoyable, assuring each and all that the I days spent in this beautiful city will re- main a green spot In our memory until we shall respond to the last alarm. J. F. STANNARD. At the conclusion ot tne reading of the above report, the. convention adjourned sine die. The event of Wednesday afternoon was the big barbacue, given to the dele- gates, officials and invited guests at Stowe Driving park. The tables were set under a large canvas and the bar- becue consisted of lambs roasted whole and great chunks of beef.. There was a huge pile of watermelons and the tables were loaded with edibles to satisfy the inner man, while the liquid refreshments flowed like water, and were free. About 500 g u e s t s partook of the royal spread, and any one with an appetite had it more than appeased. THE HOME QUESTION. The Hudson homo came up for dis- cussion at the afternoon session Tues- day. Judge Griffith was in it with sev- eral amendments to the constitution, one of which was to empower the execu- tive committee to cut off the head of any trustee that was negligent in his duties. Another amendment offered by Judge Griffith was that the treasurer furnish a bond of $10,000 in a surety company. "It is utter folly," said the judge, "to get on your knees before the Almighty and pray 'deliver us from temptation, ar^d then put temptation in the way of a brother. The proper way is to put every possible safe-guard around, and then we can sleep nights." Judge Griffith was evidently warrped up for the Home tight when he brought up the following resolution: >• Resolved,,That the trustees of the State Firemen's Home association are requested to'convey on the third Tuesday in August, ISPS, by good and sufficient deed, the title Of said Firemen's home with the appur- tenances to this association. "The day and hour have arrived," he exclaimed, "and I move you, sir, that the trustees do now transfer the 'property free from all encumbrances." There was some wrangling over the legal pow- ers of the trustees to convey the proper- ty, in which A. B. Steele, of Herkimer, and Judge Courtney took a hand. Mr. Courtney stated that as soon as it can be made clear that the trustees can give a valid deed the trustees'Stood ready to do so. The motion to ^appoint a com- mittee was carried by unanimous vote, and the chair appointed Messrs. Steele, Griffith, .Schlosser, Nale.n and Stannard,- President O'Connor recommended na- tional organization. Flower, who has resigned. The following report on the Firemen's Home, at Hudson, by the committee, consisting of A. B. Steele. L. E. Griffith, J. F. Schlosser. Daniel Naylor, and J. F. Stannard, will be of interest to all: To the President and Members of the Firemen's Association of the State of New York: The committee appointed to investigate the question of the power and legality of the trustees of the Volunteer Firemen's Home association to execute and deliver a yalid deed to the State Firemen's associa- tion. s respecstf.ully submit the following brief report: First—We met at the room of Judge Griffith in the Hotel Bennett, last evening, at S o'clock, and'continued in session until after 10. a n d since that time some of the Individual members of the committee have examined the statutes with reference to the respective organizations: but have not had time to examine with that degree of care and caution that we think is neces- sary, that there be no mistake made in this important matter. Second—From the brief examination made, we are pot prepared to say but what the trustees might execute a deed under the direction of the court that would ac- complish the object desired; but there is another matter and that is. with reference to the percentago that is now received by the volunteer firemen's home, that might be questioned In certain events. Third—We believe the wiser and more- judicious way to accomplish this important matter, and to set the question at rest for all time, would be to appeal to the-legisla- ture at its session next winter and have an. enabling aCt passed and then no question, could be raised In the future as to the' validity of the title, or as to the benefits now being received by the homo. , All of whfch is respectfully, submitted and unanimously adopted. *• '•.• 5 The committee on resolutions submitted a report of which the following is a part: The recommendations of the president as and ask tha' this convention appoint a committee with power to confer with other state organizations with the view of organizing'a national firemen's asso- ciation of state organizations." He treated at length the matter of taxation for the support of t h e Firemen's Home. CONTESTS FOR PRIZES. Thursday W a s a n Eventful Day for the Contestants. Thursday was prize contest day and the tournament, which began.at 10:30 a. m. at Stow Driving "park, lasted until after 6 in the evening. The winners of the prizes are: Hook and Ladder race—First, Independ- ent Hose company, of I.estershire; second, M. B. I/it tie Steamer and Hose company, Giens Falls. Hose race— First, Torrent Hose company, of Ithaca; second. Erie Hose company, Horneilsvllle; third. M. B. Little Engine and Hose company. Glens Falls. Inde- pendents, of Lestershlre. who won third place, in 47 1-4. w e r e ruled out on a pro- test. Their place in the hook and ladder race was not protested, and the judges held that they could retain the place. Hub and Hub race—First, M. B. Little Steamer and Hose company, of Glens Falls; second. Torrent Hose company, of Ithaca. Prize drill—First, Malt Lee Hook and Ladder company, of Ballston Spa: second. H. B. Endlcott Steamer company, of Les- tershlre; third, Baldwin Hook and Ladder company, of Addison. Hand Engine contest—First, M. B. Little Engine and Hose company, of Glens Falls; second. Ocean Engine company, of Greene. The Binghamton' companies could not compete. During the races the judges, W. Y. Ellet. of Elmira; E. E. Kattell and W. S. Overton, of this city, had sev- eral protests to struggle with. The Cart- wright company protested agajnst Inde- pendents, of Lestershire, in the hose race, on the ground that one of the members of the team was not a resident of Lestershire. The judges met in the judges' stand after the races and listen- ed to testimony. The Independents ac- knowledged' that the 'member in ques- tion did not live In Lestershire and the protest -was sustained, giving third place to the M. B. Little company. The Eri'e Hose company, of Hornellsville, entered a protest in the hub and hub race, en the ground that two men from other companies ran in front of them when they were racing; but the judges took ! no action because the company had no place among the prize winners in that race. The protest that caused the most trouble was that made by Torrent Hose company, of Ithaca, against the M. B. Little Hose company./ Torrents claimed that a member of the last named com- pany's team was a professional runner and n o t a m e m b e r of the company. The judges wrestled with the problem until nearly 7 o'clock. They were both sup- perless and dlnnerless, but they were bound to see/the thing done up properly before they ate. They'accompanied' the contestants over town, found a commis- sioner of deeds, and had Captain Martin Maynahan, of the Little team, swear that every member of his team was a member of the company in good stand- ing and a resident of Glens Falls. The protest was then dismissed.' i W'hile the races were being pulled off, the drill contests were in progress, di- rected by Captain L. L. Olmstead. of the Sixth battery; Captain Charles M. Durkee' and Captain C. S. DTake. with R. A. Gunnison, as timer. T h e M a t Lee Hook and Ladder company, the winning company, wqje uniforms of blue, wLth white belts and hats. Their work was apparently nearly perfection, and drew forth rounds of applause. The H. B. Endlcott company, owlilch won second prize, was the fifth to drill. Its mem- bers wore uniforms of drab, with brass buttons and presented a handsome ap- pearance. They were drilled by A. W. T. Back, and the almost faultless work won much applause. One of the prettiest uniformed companies in the contest,'says the Republican, w a s t h e Baldwin Hook and Ladder company, of Addison, which won third, and drilled third. Y., Aug. 20.—The great parade of firemen yesterday afternoon was held: under a rosy sky and upon dry pavements, despite the heavy nain, which began at 2 o'clock Friday morning and lasted until noon. A s a firemarjie dress affair, It was a success, and while many of the marching companies looked a lit- tle small, it was fully one hour in passing a given point. The crovvd that viewed it. next to the one that saw the Commercial Travelers' Home dedica- tion parade, was, perhaps, the largest ever seen iri this city. The intersections of Chenango and Court. Exchange and Collier, saw a dense mass of people pack- ed in like sardines, and from Chenango down Court to Water street the ^side- walks were well filled, with pe'ople, and for four blocks on "Washington street the crowd was dense. The blare of brass bands, the beating of d r u m corps, gave the affair a martial, jubilee aspect, and the crowd was as orderly as the. firemen were neat and sober-appearing. It was a clean parade from start to finish, and was perhaps the largest state fireman's parade that will ever be seen again, as the New York and Hudson river section will hereafter be about all' there is of the state organization, as up-country firemen are devoting more effort to their county's association than formerly. The wind-up war, creditable, and was re- viewed by Maycg- Dewitt and the board of aldermen, and fixe commissioners, from the balcony of the large arch on Court street, opposite Court House park. The route of the parade was down upper Court to Chenango.. to .Lewis, to Wash- ington, down Washington to Stuart, to Water, up Water to Ferry, from Ferry to Front, and down Main to the end of the asphalt and counter-march to Car- roll. Welch, of the Syracuse Herald, called on his friend, Harry Ryan, clerk of the Lewis house. —Captain M. T. Cleary, of Cortland, was a pleasant and popular guest. E-llet, chief of the Elmira paid department fire alarm, and assist- ant chief engineer, was one of the live- liest and most popular delegates. —Delancey S. Wagner, drum major of the Old Fort Plain band, of Amster- dam, is a hot member. He • has been identified with the band for twenty-five years. —Mayor Dewitt w o r e a badge costing $100 t h a t , w a s presented to him by the firemen when he was chief engineer of the Binghamton Fire department sever- al years ago. —The Fort Plain band is one of the strongest marchjng musical organiza- tions in the state. This band received many compliments .for its perfect con- certation while marching. —Frederick A. Morgan, of this city, sixty-one years ago, ran with Phoenix Engine company; organized in 1837. He was chief of the Binghamton Fire de- partment for nine years. —Tim Donovan, a well-known hotel- keeper of Owego, was a delegate, and was awarded a medal as the champion fish story-teller. He even made Police- man Bob Howell turn pale. —Captain H. W. MeAdam, of the New York Pompier Life Saving corps, proved a most agreeable gentleman to meet, and himself and his corps made many friends during their stay in the city. . —Chief Mead and his excellent force of policemen are deserving of praise for their vigilant work. Fortunately the crowd was orderly, but the police han- dled the push in good shape. —Edward Fitzgerald, of Cortland's Emeralds, w a s . o n e o f the moist popular delegates at the convention. It goes wi'lhout saying that Emerald Hose boys are all the best people on earth. —The Countess Bolinsky was a well- known figure on Court street. She said she was "loaf" all the week, but was dead gone on E. F. Knight, M. E. Sor- vey and J. M. Miller, of Cortland. —Richard F.' Hall, of Troy, has been a firman for forty-three years. He was a m e m b e r of the Troy Washington Vol- unteers in 1855, and has been chief engi- neer of the department of that city. —Veteran Fireman Hon. Elliott Dan- forth, of the state at large; Dan Pugh and Peter Walzer, of Elmira, and Major Graves, of Corning, arrived Just ahead of t>he r a i n . Logue and George T. Kelly, members of the press committee. —"Judge" Ed. Searles. a prominent Susquehanna lawyer and fireman, ar- rived in this city at midnight Sunday. He entertained Judge Downs, and Judge Downs entertained him for the whole week. —Messrs. McDermott, and O'Brien, of the New York Pompier • corps, are friends of D. J. Ma lane, and they are stuck on Binghamton, „ and want to come here and live when they get on the retired list; —Ward Hose company,' of Deposit, twenty-five strong, were a nice, clean- looking lot of boys. The company is named in honor of E. P. Kent, Henwqod, Fancher, Powell and Hogg, are.deserv- ing of mucn praise for the. great amount of labor devoted to the success- ful carrying on of the convention from start to finish. They'll be rewarded when they go to their last fire, hut for the present they'll get "nit." —Aside from the Binghamton Fire de- partment, which always shows up well in the parade, the Emeralds, of Cort- land, the Baldwin hooks of Addison and Hydrant hose of Lockport, were most applauded on the line of march.. The Urhpvilles of this city, and the Oak- dales, of Lestershire, furnished the comedy of bhe parade, which was most •heartily enjoyed by the spectators. . —The hand engine contest was won by M. B. Little Engiine and Hose company, of Little Falls, throwing <a 188-foot stream, one-inoh nozzle, winning $125. Y., Aug. 20.—Nelson • Cohoon, a gardener, residing on Park i Terrace, was robbed of $41 last night on j a Rossville car, near Howley street in- ' tersection of State street. The trolley was puljed. off leaving the car in the i dark, and four men grabbed Mr. Cohoon, picked his pockets and g o t a w a y in tha darkness. A crook who gave his name as David Brookfield, was caught by Offi- cer Welch. He was attempting to pick the pockets of A. L. Wiley, a former Binghamtonian. J. T. Wilson, who gave his home as New York city, was arrest- ed by Officer Welch and Detective Seid- man. T h e s u m of $62 w a s found in his pockets. Detectives Stevenson and Ken- n e d y a r r e s t e d A . C- H a r p h a m . ' w h o gave h i s h o m e a s Atoowa. He was found to have $33 a b o u t him. Three' other men were tak^n to jail without being first taken to the office. Yesterday afternoon " about 2:30 an old man felt some one try- ing to pick his pockets, and then saw the man trying to get away. He pointed him out to a policeman, who arrested him. When taken to the police office the man refused to give his name. He said that he lives in Brooklyn. A t t h e corner of Water and Hawley streets, durnxg the parade "Mat Higgins" snatched a pooket book out of Minnie Cass's hand. Miss Cass lives at Afton. The pocket book contained $3.50, two return tickets for Afton, and two,'keys. Higgins, who was accompanied b y a colored boy, ran and jumped into the river. He was caught in the river and taken to the police office. His brother some time ago robbed Judgo Mead's house, in Owego. His sister is also a bad character. The colored, boy was arrested. Mrs. B. McMahon, whil© on Collier street, had a pocket- book tak- en from her pocket. It contained $4 in money, and a check for $9. The thief baa not been located.
