THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS
AND DONORS
DONORS
On behalf of the Florida Storytelling Association, it is our pleasure
to welcome you to the 34th annual Florida Storytelling Festival!
Each spring we host the very best storytellers to share their stories
and their expertise. People travel from across the state and around
the country here to Mount Dora to relish this weekend and fill themselves up with stories. It is truly a special experience.
Whether this is your first festival or an annual tradition, we are
delighted you are here! We hope you enjoy the workshops, evening
performances, promising youth tellers, casual story swaps, and, most of all, the camaraderie of storytellers and listeners.
This year we have made some exciting changes! We have added
our Friday night Fringe featuring three randomly preselected
storytellers performing their most creative work. We have also
moved the competitive Slam to the big tent on Saturday night to
accommodate a bigger crowd, so come drop your name in the hat
for a chance to share your Oops themed story and maybe even win
a cash prize! Finally, be sure to browse the lobby of the Inn and bid to win in our Silent Auction.
If you are in need of assistance at any time during the festival,
please stop by the registration table at the StoryStore. We invite
you to visit our website for even more information about the Florida Storytelling Association and the good work we do year round.
Happy Tales,
Robin Schulte

Welcome!
STORYTELLING ETIQUETTE
While the art of sharing stories is encouraged, respect for the
storytellers and their work is expected.
A storyteller’s original stories are copyrighted property. It is unethical
and illegal to tell another person’s original stories without permission
of the storyteller/author. This includes personal and family stories as
well as original versions of folklore.
Published stories and poetry are copyrighted but those published
before 1923 are now in Public Domain and may be told by anyone. In
certain settings (schools, libraries) copyrighted works may be shared
under Fair Use.
Always ensure that you have the proper permissions to tell a story that
is not your original work.
When attending a storytelling program, please turn off your phone and
other devices. Outside of an emergency, please do not leave or enter
the venue while a story is in progress.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS
WARD RUBRECHT
Slam Dunk: Crafting Winning (and Better!) Slam Stories
Join two-time Moth Twin Cities grand slam and three-time SlamMN
grand slam champion Ward Rubrecht as he shares both theoretical and
practical advice on playing the game of competitive storytelling. From
deciding on appropriate goals to crafting tighter structures to practicing
your delivery, this workshop will leave you with a big bucket of tools to
improve your slam game specifically and your story craft generally.
DOVIE THOMASON
Authentic Voice and Story Choice—Finding the Story You Need to
Tell
The three essential elements of storytelling are: the story, the teller and
the listener. The way these elements interact and interplay is essential
to making meaningful connections through storytelling. Join Dovie
Thomason in looking at ways to select stories suited for the storytelling
you want to do and the listeners you want to reach. Bring your
questions, your experiences and your ideas for this highly participatory
session. Dovie’s suggested questions are:
Does this story need to be told?
Does this story need to be told by me?
Does this story need to be told by me right now?
Does this story need to be told by me right here?
Talking About Telling: Walking Together on an Ancient Path
An informal setting for storytelling conversation with Dovie
Thomason. This “workshop” is an updated adaptation of how Dovie
was drawn into a lifetime of storytelling, in conversations with elders
and storytellers of many Nations that began with her Kiowa Apache
grandmother. It’s an open-ended walk through her life’s landscape of
story and storytelling, relationships and communities, processes and
ongoing queries. Just as she learned and continues to learn,
participants are invited to bring your thoughts, questions, memories
and imagination to guide the shape of the experience
KAY PRICHER
Storytelling 101…In the Beginning
If you are new to storytelling this workshop is designed to offer guidelines
easy to follow that will help you define your style, make decisions about
the right story for yourself and your audience, and tricks of the trade to
craft a story.
Storytelling 102…From the Page to the Stage
Explore proven techniques learned from the “masters” to develop your
personal stories and your signature style. Find out what works and what
doesn’t, developing the discipline to edit and polish your story.
Understanding that there is no one right way to tell a story but being
authentic is always right.
DAN YASHINSKY
Village of Storytellers
An introduction to the art and experience of storytelling as a community-
building process. Human beings are story-tropic. We turn to stories for
wisdom, community, and intercultural understanding. Using proverbs,
family lore, short folktales, and dilemma stories, this workshop teaches
emerging storytellers how to use storytelling to affirm and develop
community. No storytelling experience necessary.
Storycare
This workshop introduces participants to the use of storytelling in a
healthcare setting. Based on my own experience as the storyteller-in-
residence at Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care (in Toronto), I'll share the
exercises, stories, and imagination games that are part of my work with
patients and staff in palliative, psychiatry, rehab, and long-term care
settings. For storytellers and healthcare

YOUTHFUL VOICES OF FLORIDA
The Florida Storytelling Association has been nurturing the next
generation of storytellers since it launched the Youthful Voices initiative
in 2001. Video submissions are received from across the state and
the best of the best are chosen for the Virginia Rivers Youthful Voices
Scholarship. These young tellers and their chaperone are awarded full
registration and lodging for the festival along with a spot on the
Saturday evening main stage. You don’t want to miss the Youthful
Voices concert!
Many of our past Youthful Voices storytellers have represented Florida
at the National Youth Storytelling Showcase, now held in conjunction
with the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival in Orem, Utah. Over the
years, many have brought home top honors!
