Maritime Gear Systemsand Components
Innovative Power Transmission
The ideal solution for any drive.
RENK gear solutions combine several gas
turbines, diesel engines and electric motors,
thus enabling intelligent power management
and the implementation of a variety of
requirement profiles.
Our product range spans single reduction
(single-in/single-out) gears, as well as combined
diesel and diesel (CODAD) and combined gas
turbine (COGAG) designs. It also includes complex
combinations of several diesel, electric and/or
gas units (CODAG/CODOG/CODELAG). Our
main reduction gears also comprise multistage
gears for pure gas-turbine use and planetary
gears with coaxial power train and transmission.
RENKWE DEFINE WHAT
IS TECHNICALLYPOSSIBLE.
Our Passion: Marine Engineering.
Shipbuilding is dependent on the enormous levels
of propulsive force and transmission power of its
engines. This is the field in which RENK has always
been known for reliable, powerful, and extremely
efficient gear engineering, ever since its first marine
propulsion system in 1934. Today, our works in
Augsburg, Rheine and Hannover develop and
produce gear systems and drive components,
with great passion and expertise, which continue
to set standards in many new ways. Whatever
the type of vessel our gear systems are built for,
from naval ships to mega yachts and fast ferries,
marine ships to LNG tankers, RENK will get it
moving with the greatest of competence.

RENK WORKS IN AUGSBURG –
Special gear systems for power outputs
of 3,000 kW to over 40 MW.
At its main works in Augsburg, RENK designs,
engineers and builds special gears for naval ships,
mega yachts, fast ferries and boats for customs
and coastguards. As many as 3 nations trust
RENK to provide the gears for their naval vessels.
The largest gear system currently produced
by RENK transmits 40 MW to each propeller;
however in principle there is no limit to power
output.

Quiet gears – a must for naval and cruise shipping.
RENK has decades of experience in producing
quiet gear systems. Our expertise has made us
the most sought-after partner for international
naval applications. Today, quiet gears are a central
feature of surface combatants, where these
represent a considerable enhancement in low
noise operation.
The use of double helical gears in combination
with a precisely manufactured, load-corrected
tooth form guarantees extremely quiet operation
under full and partial load. To prevent resonation,
the design of RENK gearbox casings incorporates
the latest engineering. A further considerable
reduction in noise levels comes from specific gear
system foundations, using hard-elastic single
or double support elements of RENK patented
designs.
Outstanding features:
• Complex combining gear systems for drive
by electric motors, gas turbines and/or
diesel engines; connecting gears between
port and starboard propellers for high-output
• Weight optimised due to specific designs
• Shock resistant according to naval standards
• Low maintenance as per perfect adjustment
of components
• Unrestricted service life
• Integrated electronic control and monitoring
systems using the latest technology

RENKAT HOME
ON THE WORLD'SOCEANS.
Our objective – no compromises on quality.
The RENK quality philosophy is applied
consistently throughout all of its works and
is the central maxim that guides all of the
company's activities, from project planning and
development to production, control, installation
and commissioning, and also including user
training and after-sales services. We use
the latest production facilities and a consistent
inspection system is in place to verify and
document product quality throughout all
stages of the production process. All finished
components are required to pass a load test
before they leave the works. The final result is
the legendary RENK reliability.

RENK WORKS IN RHEINE –
single in and double in single out gear systems
for power outputs of 1,500 kW to 35 MW.
The RENK works in Rheine designs, engineers and
produces gears for a wide range of commercial
ship types. Gears manufactured for worldwide
cargo shipping demand high levels of robustness,
reliability, safety and economy. RENK systems
fulfil these criteria in LNG carriers, container ships,
Ro-Pax ferries, tugs and supply boats and have
proven their reliability over many decades on
all oceans.
Reliability and efficiency – the success formula
for container feeder ships and LNG carriers.
Even the largest and most modern LNG carriers
in the world employ gears, propeller shaft gear
couplings and sliding bearings made by RENK.
Whether used in single or double propeller
systems, our gear units guarantee the highest
levels of reliability and economy, in all sailing
conditions and in combination with electric
motors or diesel engines alike. For constant
safe transportation across all oceans.

RENK Hannover Works –
Thrust bearings and radial bearings for shaft lines.
RENK Hannover Works designs, manufactures
and supplies bearing components for marine
applications, including thrust bearings to take
the propeller thrust and radial bearings for the
propeller shaft lines. In addition to its extensive
standard series, RENK also supplies custom-
designed bearings, particularly for marine ships,
in flood proof, shockproof as well as non-magnetic
design. All thrust bearings undergo a test run
under nominal operating conditions on the RENK
test rig. Furthermore, RENK Han over Works
supplies disconnecting devices for high power
outputs to separate the propeller shaft from the
Diesel engine.
A drive shaft's mounting is optimised to improve
the efficiency and running smoothness of the
propulsion system as a whole. RENK supplies
shaft line components to satisfy the needs of the
shipping elite – from modern, high-performance
ferries, luxurious cruise ships and ultra-fast mega
yachts to even submarines – with low noise,
reliability and at highest efficiency.

RENK and the Blue Ribbon.
Record breaking requires sophisticated and
reliable engineering. Winning the Blue Ribbon
award for the fastest Atlantic crossing between
Europe and North America with a passenger like
ship demands power, efficiency and reliability in
equal measures. The following vessels, equipped
with RENK gear systems, won the coveted
trophy: the Italian monohull mega yacht Destriero
in 1992, the Danish catamaran ferry Cat Link V
in 1998, and another Danish catamaran ferry, the
Villum Clausen, in 2000. The latter took no more
than 24 hours to cover the 1063 nautical mile
route. We are suitably proud of these successes,
which serve as proof of RENK gear systems'
extraordinary power potential.
