ELIGIBLE STUDENTS: The Jr. High Summer Academy is open to any student
entering the 6th, 7th or 8th grade in Fall 2016.
SESSION SCHEDULE: Academic courses will begin Tuesday, July 5 and conclude
Friday, July 15. Courses will meet each day 8:00am - 10:12am (Period 1); 10:30am -
12:42pm (Period 2); and 1:00pm - 2:00pm (Period 3). The summer Athletic Youth
Camps will run during the month of July— many will run in conjunction with the
academic courses so that students may create a Summer Academy schedule that
includes both academic coursework and athletic training. See course catalog for
course and athletic camp descriptions and dates/times. Students may enroll in as few
or as many courses/camps as desired.*
COST: The cost of each course/camp, including material fees, is listed in the Course
Catalog and the Schedule of Classes.
ATTIRE: Students enrolled in academic courses will adhere to BMHS’ Summer
Academy dress code. Students may wear solid color shorts or pants (no denim; shorts
must be mid-thigh) and solid color shirts (t-shirts and collared shirts okay; sleeveless,
strapless or tank tops are not permitted). Logos or graphics of any kind, except for
BMHS-wear and the Summer Academy t-shirt, are not permitted. Shoes must be
close-toed. For summer youth camps, athletic attire is required.
ACADEMIC CREDIT: The Jr. High Summer Academy is an enrichment program;
students will not be awarded academic credit.
REGISTRATION: Registration forms for the Jr. High Summer Academy academic
courses and athletic camps are available for download on the Bishop Montgomery
website (www.bmhs-la.org). Early-bird registration ends June 3, 2016.

GENERAL INFORMATION Bishop Montgomery is excited to announce the third year of the
“Jr. High Summer Academy.” This summer program, for students
entering the 6th, 7th, or 8th grade in Fall 2016, provides students the
opportunity to review and refine skills and explore new and unique
learning experiences-- all in a relaxed, fun environment geared
toward social interaction and collaboration.
The Summer Academy has two components:
• ACADEMIC: A variety of courses, spanning all subjects, will run Tuesday, July 5 through Friday, July 15.
• ATHLETIC: Many of Bishop’s varsity head coaches will offer youth athletic camps throughout the month of July.

PSYCHOLOGY OF ATHLETICS & COACHING
Are you an athlete who wants to improve mental performance on the court or on the field? Do you dream of being a coach of your own team someday? Have you ever thought about why certain coaches can connect better with their players than others? In this course, you will explore sports psychology and the techniques, practices, and ideas that can help improve game performance from both the athlete and coach perspective. You will discuss the qualities of a successful coach, learn how to prepare an effective practice plan for any sport, and develop and write your own philosophy of athletics and coaching.

BRAIN GAMES: LOGIC & STRATEGY
Level up your critical thinking and creativity in this class, where learning is all fun and games. With board games for strategy, improv games for storytelling, card games for persuasive skills, and puzzles and riddles for logic, this class will exercise all parts of your brain. Students will discuss game theory and design and build academic skills, all while being introduced to new and classic games. Brain Games: the only class where you will learn to play and play to learn!

LET’S DANCE!
Whether you want to learn to dance or improve your flexibility and technique, this class has a little something for everyone– beginner to advanced. Sharpen your dance skills, increase your muscle tone, and have fun, with instruction from a Pilates-certified instructor and dance professional. Every class will begin with core strengthening exercises using the Pilates method, followed by stretching that emphasizes proper technique. Students will then explore ballet, jazz and modern dance styles through short exercises and full routines. Participants should wear (or bring to change into) dance or workout attire.

INTRODUCTION TO ATHLETIC TRAINING
Ever wonder what exactly the medical personnel on the sidelines and behind the scenes at sporting events do? Want to know more about treating the physical and emotional well-being of an athlete? Here’s your chance! This interactive and informative course is designed for students with an interest in athletic training and sports medicine. Engaging lectures filled with personal, first-hand experiences, combined with hands-on activities, will help students explore the fundamentals of athletic training including first aid, injury treatment and rehabilitation, sports psychology, kinesiology, and physiology.

MAD SCIENCE!
KABOOM! We’re blasting into summer with some serious science fun this July! In this exploratory course of the physical and life sciences, students will experiment with explosions, examine endo and exoskeletons, send stuff spiraling through space, create chemical concoctions– all while learning about the principles of biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering. If you’re someone who likes to watch things fizz, froth, foam, flash, and fly, you’re invited to join us for nine fast-paced days of hands-on learning, lab activities, and dynamic demonstrations.

FROM PAGE TO STAGE: CREATIVE STORYTELLING & EXPRESSION
Have you ever heard or read a story that was so vivid and exciting that the characters seemed to come to life? This dynamic course will explore elements of writing and performance, as it focuses on the main components of storytelling. Class discussions will incorporate critical reading and analysis of short stories and poems, innovative and creative writing activities, and up-on-your-feet theatre and improvisation exercises (just like “Who’s Line Is It Anyway?”). Through exploration of character, plot, setting, and perspective, From Page to Stage will support critical thinking, boost writing and verbal skills, and provide opportunities for imaginative and impromptu self-expression.

FUTURE LEADERS WORKSHOP
In this course, students will hone important leadership skills while participating in a variety of interactive workshops and activities led by Bishop Montgomery’s own Dean of Student Life and ASB student leaders. The class will focus on communication, team building, and problem-solving to help students understand and utilize the skills necessary to be a leader of positive character and Christian service. The overarching goal of the action-packed, dynamic workshop is to encourage and empower students to be active leaders in their schools, teams, and activities.

PARAGRAPH POWER + SUMMER READING
This course will provide students the opportunity to improve their English skills, most notably in the areas of grammar and writing. Students will review basic grammar principles, mechanics, sentence structure, and vocabulary to support stronger writing skills, and read short stories with an emphasis on critical thinking and thoughtful analysis. T0 practice their strengthened grammar, reading, and analytic skills, the students will pen solid paragraphs on various literary topics. *This course will also include a summer reading component to help students get a jump on-- or complete-- their summer reading assignment. Students must bring their current school’s assigned summer reading book(s) to class each day. Students without a summer reading assignment are required to bring a copy of Wonder by R.J. Palacio.

MATH-MAGICIANS
Learn math secrets and tricks that will forever change how you look at the world of numbers! This course will help you begin thinking like a math genius– strengthening math fundamentals and number sense, understanding important math terms, and making mathematics fun. With the help of “arithmetricks” and mental math shortcuts, you’ll be able to successfully tackle math problems in a flash. No matter your current math ability, this course will teach you how to properly prepare for math assessments, have you performing fantastic feats of the mind with ease, and build everyday skills that could help boost performance on future HSPT’s, PSAT’s, ACT’s and SAT’s!

FUN WITH SPANISH!
Summer is the perfect time to learn a new language and this introductory course will provide a range of interactive language-learning activities including music, art, games, hands-on projects, and short, walking field trips. Activities will be varied so that students can work individually, with partners, in small groups, or as a class. Join us to learn basic Spanish grammar, vocabulary, and culture with the opportunity for practice of pronunciation, listening, and conversational skills --all in a fun environment!

Come learn the French language in a relaxed atmosphere where fun is de rigueur! COMIC BOOK-MAKING
Unleash your creativity and “Marvel” in your accomplishments during this class geared to comic book aficionados! During this course, students will learn the elements of the comic book genre with a focus on character creation and development, simple storylines, and dialogue. Working from an initial idea to a completed comic book, students will practice basic drawing and inking skills, while bringing their ideas to paper and seeing new heroes, villains, aliens, and super-humans spring to life. Drawing or previous comic book experience not required.

COOL CRAFTS
If you love Pinterest, paintbrushes, and glue guns, this is the class for you! Learn fun techniques and create many useful holiday projects including one-of-a-kind greeting cards, hand-made presents for friends and family, and small crafts to share. Learn to recycle household containers into fun and handy projects. Sewing and knitting will be included based on student interest.

DIGITAL DOWNLOAD: INTRODUCTION TO PHOTOGRAPHY & GRAPHIC DESIGN
Artistic types wanted! Join us this summer for an introduction to digital photography and learn basic component techniques, proper camera use (aperture, shutter speed, and lens focal length), light balance, ISO settings, and file formats. After capturing some amazing images, you will put them to use while learning the fundamentals of Adobe Photoshop and InDesign, industry standards in the field of graphic design. With a focus on aesthetics and effective communication through media, students will create a variety of fun and original desktop projects in Bishop’s own Mac lab.
MATERIALS: Students should bring their own 35mm Digital SLR camera, if possible.

BMHS BAND TRAINING
*BAND TRAINING WILL BE HELD FROM 1-2:00PM EACH DAY
Join our Knight Band and Guard to learn and practice any of these: trumpet, drums, saxophone, rifles, trombone, synthesizer, horn, tuba, flute, clarinet, guitar, bass, flags and rifles. The student leaders of our Knight Band & Guard have been planning an explosion of new music for this fall, and you can learn it all on your own (or BMHS-rented) instrument-- songs by Drake, Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake, Santana, John Legend, Lorde, the Rolling Stones, and more. We want our band's musical style to reflect the best that the music scene has to offer, and we want you to be a part of it! (Students who participate in this summer Band Training may elect to continue training with the BMHS Knight Band and Guard throughout the 2016-17 school year on Tuesdays or Thursdays 3:30-4:30pm, depending on your student’s schedule.)
