November 2016 OWRC–MOAA Briefing Board

President’s Notes, November 2016As we approach the end of the year, it is important that we keep our eyes focused on the programs for the remainder of 2016 and into the new year. Our meeting in November appears to be one of great interest and then the Christmas Party is always a true “winner”.

Our own 1LT Ernie Stadvec spoke at the October meeting and his talk is summarized in this newsletter by MG Hahn. It is reported to be extremely interesting as Ernie spoke of the continuing theories surrounding the disappearance of Amelia Earhart. November will bring State Senator Larry Obhof (Senate District 22), President Pro-Tempore of the Ohio Senate to speak at the Galaxy Restaurant. And everyone looks forward to our annual December OWRC Christmas Dinner at the Galaxy. This meeting will present our change of officers for 2017. I was able to represent OWRC this month to receive our third 5-Star Award for MOAA chapters for the 2016 year in Alexandria, Virginia at the 2016 Annual Conference. It is a great honor for OWRC to again earn this award, which comes through your many contributions throughout the year which makes this recognition possible. I also attended the Summit County Veteran of the Year Dinner where OWRC’s own Colonel Dave Taylor was the guest speaker honoring “The Vietnam Veteran”.Veteran’s Day is another opportunity for each of us to recognize and honor the men, women, parents and families who sacrificed so much in defense of the Nation. If you have the opportunity to speak at or attend an event honoring America’s Veterans, or the time to visit a cemetery to honor our Veteran brother and sisters, please do so. It is only through their shared sacrifices that we have the opportunity to vote for our leadership and to continue the life that we and our families hold so dear. And, if you shop ACME Fresh Market, remember that they are asking us to save and return through OWRC, receipts from Aug 11–Dec 31 to receive “cash-back” money each year to use on our ROTC and local veterans programs. As always, please stay healthy, stay alert, and join us at our upcoming meetings.Sincerely,Larry Ashbaugh, President, OWRC

Colonel Calta is a native of Iowa City, Iowa. He was commissioned as an Air Force ROTC Distinguished Military Graduate. Throughout his more than 29 years of active duty he served in various logistics, aircraft maintenance, inspection, airlift support, air mobility support, quality, and readiness positions. His assignments were at flight, squadron, group, wing, and major command levels. He was twice a squadron commander, twice a chief of aircraft maintenance, and twice a group commander. Duty locations included assignments in Hawaii, Ohio, Turkey, Illinois, Virginia, Greece, Washington, and Japan.

Colonel Calta earned a BBA at the University of Iowa and an MS at the Air Force Institute of Technology in Dayton, Ohio. OWRC–MOAA Briefing Board November 2016

Legislative Update: November 2016From MOAA National, the top legislative item is the issue of SSIA for surviving spouses. Currently both the House and Senate versions of FY 2017 Defense Authorization Bill prohibit the expiration of the $310 per month allowance, but neither authorizes the continuation of increases of this to offset the phase-out of SBP-DIC. Please visit the MOAA National website legislative area for a preferred-wording message you can send to your legislative representatives (House and Senate). Remember, the Surviving Spouse component is the fastest growing membership segment and a force-multiplier of MOAA. We must do all we can to protect these loved-ones. The House and Senate will be returning for a lame-duck session and we can hope they act and support our military. They do read the messages. Please do your part and send that message,November 8th is the day to VOTE! Ensure you exercise your right and VOTE! Read the issues; review the stances toward the military from all candidates and VOTE!

Surviving SpousesBeing Thankful©

By Sharon DeVaney, member, Surviving Spouse Advisory CommitteeWe will celebrate Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday in November. But did you know this was not always the case? Here’s a little history: The first Thanksgiving was celebrated by the Pilgrims in 1621 after their first harvest in the New World, and the feast lasted three days, with 90 Native Americans and 53 Pilgrims in attendance. On Oct. 3, 1979, President George Washington proclaimed the first official Thanksgiving to be held Nov. 26 of that year. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day should be observed the last Thursday in November. This again changed Dec. 26, 1941, when President Franklin Roosevelt signed a bill into law declaring that Thanksgiving should fall on the fourth Thursday of November.Everyone has different Thanksgiving traditions. Maybe you will begin the day with a church service. You might spend the day helping to cook and serve a meal at a charitable organization or on a military post or base. Maybe you will celebrate at home with family and friends. Or perhaps you’ll spend the day making a plan for your Black Friday shopping excursion. However you spend your time, if you have loved ones serving overseas, I am sure your thoughts will be with them and their fellow servicemembers. For me, this day always has been about finding my recipes for favorite dishes, shopping for groceries, and planning how to prepare all the foods. My husband's agenda for the day included a run followed by turkey dinner and watching football games. When we were overseas and living on the economy, we went to the mess hall for Thanksgiving. There were several benefits: 1) The mess hall was decorated; 2) the meal was wonderful and someone else had done the work; and 3) you could visit with all your friends without having to cook, serve, and clean up after the feast. I want to thank all the dining hall chefs and staff everywhere for making Thanksgiving so enjoyable for families far away from home. However you spend your day, remember to give thanks for our servicemembers all over the world. I hope you have a happy holiday.
