THE RECTORY September 2019 Dear All Three of our Churches, in this benefice of five Churches, are named after St Mary, Marston Magna, Rimpton and Mudford, hence why we have something called a Patronal Festival, a special service to mark the dedication of the Churches. There are a few Marys in the New Testament, so our Mary has added “the Virgin” so we know they are dedicated to Mary, the mother of Jesus. Mary is quite a special person, and, in the Church’s, calendar has four special days. The first is the 25th March, Lady Day, the first quarter in olden days when rents were paid to landlords. This day is when we remember the Angel Gabriel visiting Mary to tell her that she would be the mother of God's Son and to call him Jesus. The event is recorded in Luke's gospel. The second is called “The Visitation”. The time Mary visited her cousin Elizabeth, who as an older woman, was expecting the much-wanted child who was to become known as John the Baptist. This event is also written of in Luke's gospel. The third is the 15th August, most often remembered in Roman Catholic Churches as the day Mary was received into Heaven. The fourth is the 8th September, to remember the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary. There is no record of this in the New Testament, but it has a long tradition going back to early apocryphal writings. Apocryphal means of doubtful authenticity. These writings also tell us that Mary's parents were called St Ann and St Joachim. I have a copy of a Leonardo da Vinci 's cartoon of St Ann with St Mary and the two children John and Jesus, in my study. The drawing hangs in the National Gallery. It was given me a long time ago when I lived in London when my Sunday School teacher came to visit, as a “Thank you “present”. This year celebrates the five hundredth anniversary of Leonardo's death. We always have someone special to preach at these Patronal Services. This Year we have Bishop Ruth Worsley, Bishop of Taunton. You should be familiar with her name as along with Bishop Peter Hancock, Bishop of Bath and Wells, they write a piece in our Newsletter each month. This is something which has never happened in parishes where I have been before and show something of their concern for all the people in the Diocese. The service will have the Benefice Choir to lead the singing and will be followed by refreshments. Do try to come and hear in person the Bishop who writes for our Newsletter. Revd. Letter from the Right Reverend Ruth Worsley, Bishop of Taunton

A time for grace and patience September is the month when schools go back, harvest services are being planned, and the College of Bishops takes place. Yippee! Actually, I’m not being sarcastic. Of course, there’s always a sense of this is a month when many of us feel ‘back at work’. It can seem a busy month with lots to challenge us. However, we do have some agency in how we approach the tasks of daily living, don’t we? So, for instance, at the College of Bishops this month, we shall do more work on ‘Living in Love and Faith’, the theology, social anthropology, biblical scholarship and scientific knowledge being considered as the Church reflects on issues of human identity, sexuality and marriage. I’m looking forward to it. And that’s not being sarcastic either. You see it is not that this will be an easy topic, something which we can just all agree to but rather it will be an opportunity to meet with one another in the presence of God. We will no doubt have some difficult conversations, grapple over imponderables, find ourselves feeling vulnerable but this is the stuff of life, and seeking to find God’s way in a world which has little time for religious faith anymore. The College meets in an Oxford college over a few days and it can sometimes seem rather distant from the everyday world in which we live. However, we always celebrate Holy Cross day while we are there. The Collect for that day reminds us that “the passion of thy blessed Son hast made an instrument of painful death to be for us the means of life and peace”. That surely means that life and peace can be found even through the experience of pain and death. In fact, sometimes it’s the only way to find them. Dealing with complex issues, tackling challenging tasks is not about finding the easiest and quickest route to an answer. Sometimes it requires much more from us and we need the grace and patience of the Christ who made Himself a sacrifice for us. The following is the prayer we use on Holy Cross Day after we receive bread and wine together, perhaps we need to use it more as we face the challenge of seeking to live as men and women of God in His world today. “O faithful God, whose Son bore our sins in his body on the tree and gave us this sacrament to show forth his death until he come: give us grace

to glory in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, for he is our salvation, our life and our hope.” The Right Revd. Ruth Worsley + Bishop of Taunton

THE RAIN REPORT

The summer period from the end of June through

July has been exceptionally dry. July rainfall

totalled 19.5 mms (¾ inch) with 5 wet days, but

more than half of this total (11 mms (½ inch)) fell

on the last day of July leaving just 8.5 mms ( 1/3

inch) for the rest of the month. The 24-day period

commencing 25th June saw just 2 ½ mms (1/8

inch).

July can be a fairly wet month having an average

rainfall of 62.5 mm (2 ½ inches). There have been

some very wet Julys with 2007 being the wettest I

have recorded with a hefty 156 mms (6 ¼ inches)

and 24 wet days. The driest 2016 with 10 mms (3/8

inch).

Ricky Gibbs. Somerset Churches Trust Charity RIDE AND STRIDE. (Saturday 14th September 2019) Last year, I visited 54 Churches while cycling 85 miles. This was my eleventh ride and I had said I would retire, but I’ll give it one more go. It’s hardly the Tour De France, but plenty far enough for me, and hopefully my legs will stand up to the challenge. Any money raised goes wholly towards Church maintenance and repair. Half goes to Rimpton Church and half to the Somerset Churches Trust general fund which makes grants for Church maintenance in Somerset. If anyone would like to support this cause, please contact myself, or John and Brenda Spencer. Sponsorship may be on a per Church basis or a fixed sum. Ricky Gibbs Chez Nous (tel. 01935-850263)

GARDENING CLUB

There is no meeting in September. The next one is on Tuesday 8th October. The talk is “Pruning Shrubs and Trees. Eileen Oldham, Club President COOK BOOKS FOR SALE

Two books are for sale with links to Rimpton and

Marston Magna. They are first editions, written by

Admiral James Burney (1750-1821) between 1803

and 1817. One is a single volume and the other

consists of five volumes. He was the brother of the

novelist and diarist, Fanny Burney. The family was

a close one.

Their nephew, Richard Allen Burney, was the

Rector of Rimpton between 1802 and 1834. In

1811, he married Elizabeth Williams, the daughter

of the Rector of Marston Magna, who was also a

Magistrate. There are memorials to each Rector

in their respective Churches.

The books for sale are standard works on the

subject. Admiral Burney accompanied Captain

Cook round the world on his second and third

voyages. The five volumes are entitled ‘A

Chronological History of the Discoveries in the

South Sea or Pacific Ocean’. The single volume is

entitled ‘A Chronological History of North-Eastern

Voyages of Discovery and of the early eastern

navigations of the Russians’. They include several

Charts. The single volume includes the famous

original description of Captain Cook’s death.

The book seller is Peter Harrington of London. The

only problem over the acquisition of the books is

their price, a total of £18,500. If anyone has any

money to spare.

September is Emergency Preparedness Month!

When people talk about emergencies you may think of recent tragic events such as the attacks on London and Manchester, recent UK storms and flooding, the Nepal earthquake, the Indonesian tsunami or other global disasters. What if we told you that being prepared is not just for those

headline grabbing incidents? Power cuts, water main bursts, gas leaks, fires, transport strikes, road closures etc. can happen any day. Taking proactive steps to be better prepared will help you not only with everyday emergencies but also with far less likely incidents. Somerset Prepared will be joining in the preparedness campaign, with a different focus for every week in September. Week 1- This will be all about People Prepared, how individuals can be more resilient and prepared when it comes to emergencies. Week 2 - This will be all about Communities Prepared, how communities can be more resilient and prepared when it comes to emergencies Week 3 - This will be all about Businesses Prepared, how businesses can be more resilient and prepared when it comes to emergencies Week 4 - This will be all about Volunteering, what structures are in place for you to get involved and how voluntaries help in emergencies. There will be a post on Somerset Prepared each week as well as tweets on our twitter page! So, get involved and visit the Somerset Prepared website throughout September. September 2019 Edition

News from your Village Agent Team September has always felt like a fresh start to me. After the relative gentleness of August when the school run is over, and people are away on holiday. It feels like a “New Shoes” month, despite the fact that the land around us is getting ready to sleep. I suppose we could think of it as a second spring, when the trees provide a beautiful coloured show and the harvest is collected. Now is a great time to prepare for the dark months ahead. Isolation can be a real problem in the winter so make a start on finding things to fill those dark cold days before the weather turns and you find yourself sofa bound, or box set binging! Join your local groups. I know we talk about this rather a lot, but it is such an important part of keeping yourself well. Even if you are working, you can find that you have nothing else once you get home because you have used all your energy in the workplace and don’t have much time and energy left to maintain friendships. Websites and parish magazines are packed with local offers. If your village doesn’t already host a weekly or monthly coffee morning, now is your chance to organise something! Reduce the length of dark evenings by joining a knit and natter, WI, Men’s Shed, art, photography or local history group and

keep your body moving even on the worst weather days by joining a gentle exercise class. Ask me for more information. Volunteering has become more flexible. You are in control of your commitment level and so you do not need to fear that once you sign up, you will never have a Saturday to yourself again! Phone SPARK 01460 202970 for ideas. Kirsty Jennsen of The Royal Volunteer Library Service has lots of volunteers with a varied commitment load, visiting people in their homes for coffee and a book swap: 0300 123 2224, [email protected]. Some volunteer roles can be conducted by phone and possibly from your home. Contact our Carers Service 0800 3168600 to find out how to chat to unpaid carers by phone, or Silver Line 0800 4 70 80 90, Age UK: 01823 345613 or The Samaritans 01823 288998. Consider starting our Good Neighbours Scheme in your area - contact CCS on 01823 331222. We always appreciate additional support to run our Carers Groups that meet to provide advice and a break for unpaid carers. Contact me or the Somerset Carers Service number for more information. Small Grants are available to start a community group or perhaps to support yourself when going through a difficult time. We can help you find these, either by contacting me or to access larger community based grants and consultancy for Parishes contact Ade on [email protected] 01823 331 222. For personal funding go to the Turn2us website and tap in your particulars to see if you qualify for something. This could be a small grant for an unpaid Carer to purchase something to enhance their caring role or for improving the insulation on your house. We are also supporting those who wish to become a self-employed paid carer. Contact project co-ordinator Rhys Davis: [email protected] or telephone 07788350806 or our Enterprise Agent at CCS Vince Tillman. Last of all, don’t forget that this is the time to register your family for a Warmer Homes Discount with your electricity provider. You could get £140 off your electricity bill under the Warm Home Discount Scheme. The 2019 to 2020 scheme will start on 14 October 2019. WOULD YOU LIKE TO HELP US?

We are looking for volunteers to join our “Friends of Marston Magna Village Hall” group. This is so that we can call on people to help with tasks, like baking cakes, helping at a function in aid of the hall, manning a stand, or just generally helping us. There is no need to become a committee member. Anyone interested should contact Karen Price by phone or email please, or any member of the committee. Karen Price (Chairperson) Telephone 01935 851336 BONFIRE NIGHT! We intend to have a bonfire on Saturday 2nd November in the Moat Field. We have started to make a bonfire but if anyone has any wood (pallets/planks etc.) please could you add them to the piles at the western end of the moat field. The gate is unlocked so it is possible to drive there. I would also like to record the village's thanks to Derek Tottle for his splendid work clearing the Moat Field. It now looks terrific. Assistance for all us Villagers No, I don’t have the answer to Brexit, and I can’t make people drive slower... but, a recent discussion resulted in this idea (which is up and running in our old village in Herts, so I’m not claiming originality): there are a number of us in the village who no longer go out to work, can drive and can therefore offer to help any villager who, for whatever reason, can’t collect their prescriptions, go shopping, pop to the Post Office, doctor, visit a friend etc. Three or four of us are already ‘signed up’ and we’re hoping to find another 6-8 people who will join us. The idea would be to publish our names and numbers in this magazine every month and whoever needs help, can then call someone on the list to ask for help. Each of us in the group will take responsibility for finding someone else on the list, who can assist if we can’t at that time. We’ve all got great neighbours but there are times when a wider group of helpers, can, well, help! If you’d like to join in and go on the list, could you let me know. If you can let me know by 30th September, we can get this up and running in time for autumn. Looking forward to hearing from you. Julia Phillips 07770 827263 / 01935 851399. Hello All in Rimpton I am looking for a spot to park my car, would anyone have anything available for say £5 a week, or for shopping, or cleaning done etc? Many thanks Sandra Kiddell - Telephone 01935 851426

If there are any of you that could volunteer to help, please email or ring me and I can add your name and be in touch with a programme of action. I look forward to hearing from you. Marston Magna & Rimpton WI Report for September 2019

The August meeting was a very enjoyable and successful craft evening. We tried Somerset embroidery, card making and created beautiful glitter gift boxes. Generally, August is a quiet month with summer holidays, so we were planning the future programme for outings, speakers etc. There were many good ideas put forward. Some members had an amazing visit to the Royal Mint recently, and we had never seen so much money in our lives. Prior to that we went to Abergavenny market. Some ladies visited Highclere Castle and others enjoyed a lunch at Haselbury Mill. New members will be most welcome. Our next meeting will be on September 9th at 7.30pm. Desert Island discs will be the speaker’s topic. Submitted by Jill Eagland

OUR LOVELY VILLAGE

It was Saturday the 10th August and I was making my way home through the Church after a successful session with the Marston Magna Action Group when we cleared and swept Newberry Lane and paused to look over the wall at the freshly mown Moat Field. What with that and a smart graveyard, I was struck with the feeling I was living in a caring community. We have a weekly Village Café organised by Ken and Beryl Field supported by many volunteers, a lovely Village Hall run by a dedicated committee led by Karen Price and supported by a group of friends plus many other organisations like the WI, a photographic group to name just two and even a cider club, details about which I am little hazy!! We had a very successful Midsummer Fair in June thanks hugely to Ann and Campbell McGee with again another dedicated team of volunteers which was able to help the church finances as well as giving money to some of the village organisations and we take the monthly magazine for granted but I know just how much effort Sam and Molly Crabb put into that.

We should be proud of our little village and as Chairman of the Parish Council, I have been given an opportunity to try to make a further impact if possible. We have already been successful through Howard Butterfield’s persistence in gaining some progress to alleviating the effects of through traffic, and Rex Knott has pressured Yarlington Homes to improve greatly the path from the playground to the West End homes. We also hope they will fulfil their responsibilities and do some clearing where their properties abut the stream. We shall shortly repaint the playground equipment under the supervision of Peter Griffiths – more volunteers please? This leads me on to how the village can improve its lot. Perhaps you are content to leave things as they are but if any of you have any suggestions on how to improve the village, please email me with your ideas. You can also come to the open session that is held before the Parish Council meeting starts and present your thoughts. Our next meeting is at 7.00pm on Monday the 23rd September 2019. I would also like to make a fresh appeal for help with the Action Group we set up over a year ago when I collected over twenty names. Sadly, we are now down to a faithful few, but the coffee is excellent and the sessions on a Saturday morning are not too long, especially if we have a good turnout. We also have fun. Our next session is on the 7th September. I would like to end with saying a huge thank you to all our volunteers and also to Derek Tottle for putting his cows into the Moat Field – I know the anxiety levels of the residents of Court Gardens were unduly raised - and then topping the grass, particularly the rough vegetation in the moats. I shall be checking my Inbox shortly!! Lawrence Hopkins [email protected]

MILK BOTTLETOPS Can you all remember to remove the foil pull caps from the tops, because the metal detector on Perry’s conveyor belt stop the machines. Also remember it is only plastic tops with a 2 or 4 in the recycling symbol that I can accept, all the rest go in my wheelie bin. There is a company called Massmould, who produce tops made from the same plastic as milk bottle tops e.g. Robinson’s squash, and Evian water, so from now on, I can accept any tops made by Massmoulds.

Thank you everyone. A new art class is starting on Wednesday 18th September from 10 am to 12.30 with Jane Brayne.
