ANCILLARY TASKS
How effective is the combination of your
main product and ancillary tasks?
About ancillary tasks
The main use of ancillary tasks is to promote the
main product, in this case films, this can be done
via posters, film reviews or radio ads.
Another way of promotion for films is film
festivals where the film is showcased and
receives recognition, for example ‘across the hall’
was made from short to feature length film.
The reason for ancillary attachments products is
to get exposia through the use of other media
conventions.
DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
PROMOTION
The reason the the double page spread film review will promote my film is that it has received good reviews, which gives readers the idea that the film is good.
Also there is synergy between elements of the review film and poster which readers will be familiar with e.g. font and picture.
A basic plot is also revealed which gives readers an idea of the film yet not revealing to much information
A large bold font is used revealing the viewing dates and location, which encourages readers to go and see the film.
TARGET AUDIENCE
The target audience for our products is mainly
social class ABC1 as they are biggest readers of
film magazines such as empire.
Our target age group is 15-24 as they are much
more accessible to the internet as well as biggest
cinema goers.
The product is aimed at both genders and mainly
focusing on those who use a lot of media within
there routine.
APPEALING TO THE
AUDIENCEI feel the layout of the review is simplistic yet modern relating to the target audience at all times. The use of larger images and bold writing, rather than an overload of writing, This helps to entice readers and give them an interest into both the ancillary but more importantly the film.
The colour scheme of white black and orange is simplistic yet the orange stands out revealing larger more important headings.
The use of page splitters were also added to help the audience read the piece much more clearly.
PUBLICATION
The double page review of my film will appear in a more laid back magazine like ‘empire’ or ‘total film’.
looking at different reviews from ‘empire magazine’ and ‘the guardian’ there was a much more informal approach to those in the magazine. This connotes that there is different target audiences for each.
I feel the article would be best suited in a media based magazine aimed at a younger generation, as the layout and content is informal yet informative.

POSTER
TARGET AUDIENCE
The target audience for my poster was that of my film, 15-24 age group, both genders and ABC1 social class. When considering this within my poster design I had to think of conventions which would appeal to them and link to the film.
I feel the simplicity works well and has a modern feel to it which contrasts the psychedelic feel to the poster which has synergy to the film itself.
The slogan has a font which imitates handwriting therefore makes the the film seem personal to the audience. A memory almost.
I also changed the title of the film to be central as this is how most people read posters and make it the main focus for the audience
INDIVIDUALTY
The use of the white Polaroid picture on the black background firstly entices the viewer to the main point of the poster being the large 1970 title and the retro style photo.
The simplicity of the contrasting monochrome colours will stand out from others and draws the eyes the central colour picture.
I feel that my poster gives the impression of the film in one glance as it portrays a contrast between past and present.
This challenges conventions of other posters as they are usually designed to fill the whole space provided .
FILM CONNECTIONS.
The main connection which the poster has to the film is that the image of the main character is emphasized through the positioning of the shot.
The filter also used was to create a retro image relates to the narrative of going back in time.
The use of the Polaroid links to old style photography which was popular in the 70’s but also the fact of a token or memory of the trip.
In contrast to the is the technological style of the ‘1970’ font which relates to the technology theme to the film.
RELEVENT
INFORMATION
When adding my credits i.e. stars and directors I decided to locate them in the bottom part of the post it which I usually used to write a caption for the photo itself.
For the star ratings I decided to put this in the black border in a contrasting white so it would stand out, but this doesn’t seem as though its part of the theme.
The main titled is central just under the main picture of the poster as the title of the film is the most important to the audience in terms of recognition.
TAGLINES
The tag line used on the poster is ‘who needs technology?’ this sums up the film as at first she feels she cant live without it until she is taught that there is better things to life than technology.
To the audience which is the younger generation all use many amounts of technology on a daily basis in which they may feel they can relate to the character.
When reading the tag they may even feel like it is some form of joke as they feel they couldn’t live without technology.
EVALUATION
Which aspects worked well?
I feel that both the poster and double page
spread work well in terms of promoting the film.
In terms of themes and continuity of colour
schemes, layouts, fonts and pictures.
I like how the use of simplicity works well and
you can tell that these products are a lot less
mainstream which relates to our target audience
and connotes a short film.
PROMOTION
How does promotion link to the product?
The use of ancillary tasks will help promote the film
as they will feature in magazines and places which
are targeted to our target audience.
The use of continuity helps to create an identity for
the film, meaning that the audience will recognize the
film from our ancillary tasks.
The use of star ratings and reviews helps to imply to
the audience that it is a good short and worth
watching.
TARGETING THE
AUDIENCEI feel I have successfully targeted the right audience as I feel that the layout of both tasks are very simplistic which appeals to out audience of 15-24. as over complicated in-depth explanations to the film are for readers such as the guardian.
The simple use of monochrome is also modern and easily comprehendible unlike those with mammoth amounts of writing.
I feel that the audience which im targeting like the suspense of going to see a film which they don’t know to much about which is why my ancillary promotions don’t reveal to much about the film and that the audience can have a different take
CHANGES
From looking at the finished products of my ancillary
tasks changes which I would make to these if had a
chance would include;
Change the font of the directors list to a smaller font
as I feel it is quite big at the moment.
I would also change the size of the film stats box as I
feel it takes up too much space of the review.
Lastly I would like to change the image on the double
page spread so that it would fit and blend into the
article more.
WHAT TO ADD
After evaluating my final ancillary tasks if I had
the chance to add anything they would include;
A behind the scenes look at the film or cast
interview for my double page spread which would
make the audience have a better look into the
film.
Also I would add when the film is to be shown
and where on the poster like I had on the double
page spread.
