    1. FIFTY OLD FOLK HOME REMEDIES TO RELIEVE ARTHRITIS AND

    RHEUMATISM

Arthritis, one of the oldest diseases known to mankind, is theinflammation of one or more joints. It occurs in all races at

all times. Decline in joint function generally begins at age30. No one really knows the exact cause of this painful anddisabling disease. However, there are two theories:

    1. Infection

    2. The body's own defences go out of line and attack its own tissues

Also experts believe that emotional stress plays a veryimportant role in the cause of arthritis.

The most severe case of this crippling disease is RHEUMATOIDARTHRITIS. Factors relating to it are fatigue, shock, injury, and exposure to cold and dampness. At times nodules may show upunder the skin, around the elbows, wrists and fingers, andoccasionally on the ankles. The control of this particular typeof arthritis may require the cooperation of a physician, a

physical therapist, an orthopedic surgeon, and often thephysician who specializes in psychosomatic diseases. Rest isconsidered one of the most essential factors in treatment, whichincludes emotional rest. Diet need not be too restrictive, butshould be rich in animal proteins, calcium and iron adequate invitamins. At present, many arthritic patients have been takingaspirins as a temporary pain-reliever with good results in somecases. Some patients also are given physical treatments withheat and water (bathing and whirlpools), fingertip massaging, and other methods, which an expert physiotherapist may use.

Remember this - PEOPLE DO NOT DIE OF RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS BUTRATHER WITH IT!

Since so many people in this country (over 150,000 a year) are

afflicted with this excruciating, deforming disease, many HOMEREMEDIES have been tested and used with some degree ofeffectiveness. Listed below are 50 OLD-HOME-FOLK REMEDIES thathave been tried by various people for treating arthritis ingeneral and rheumatism.

    11. HOW TO MAKE AND USE HERB PREPARATIONS

Making your own herbal concoctions for medicinal purposes isreally not that difficult. And since the best herbal

preparations are those made when the plants are fresh, thebetter off you are to grow your own herbs and make your own

    preparations.

  • 7/28/2019 ancient-formulas

    39/40

But even the best plants can be ruined if you use the wrong kindof process in preparing your remedies. Your choice depends onthe parts of the plant to be used, the form in which the remedywill be taken, and the desired result.

Remember that herbal remedies are not one-shot wonder cures.Their effectiveness is based largely on a gradual cure.

The following ways of preparing your fresh herbs are those mostcommonly used in herbal medicine. Always use an enamel ornon-metallic pot.

Infusion - this is a beverage made like tea, combining boiledwater with the plants and steeping it to extract the activeingredients. The normal amounts are about 1/2 to 1 ounce of the

plant to one pint of boiled water. You should let the mixture

steep for five to ten minutes, covered, and strain the infusioninto a cup.

Cold Extract - preparing herbs with cold water preserves themost volatile ingredients, while extracting only minor amountsof mineral salts and bitter principles. Add about double theamount of plant material used for an infusion to cold water andlet sit for about 8 to 12 hours, strain and drink.

Decoction - this method or preparation allows you to extractprimarily the mineral salts and bitter principles rather thanvitamins and volatile ingredients. Boil about half an ounces of

plant parts per cup of water for up to 4 minutes. Steep themixture with the cover on the pot for a few minutes.

Juice - chop and press fresh plant parts to make juice, then adda bit of water and press again. This is excellent for gettingvitamins and minerals from the plant. Drink the juice rightaway for the best results.

Syrup - make a basic syrup to which you will add medicinal

ingredients by boiling 3 pounds of raw, brown sugar in a pint ofwater until it reaches the right consistency.

Powder - grind your dried plant parts until you have a powder.the powder can be taken with water, milk, soup, or swallowed ingelatin capsules.

Ointment - quick method: combine well one part of your powderedremedy with four parts hot petroleum jelly or lard. For

purists: Add the decoction of the desired herb to olive oil andsimmer until the water has completely evaporated. Add beeswax

as needed to get a firm consistency. A little gum benzoin or adrop of tincture of benzoin per ounce of fat will help preserve

  • 7/28/2019 ancient-formulas

    40/40

    the ointment.

Essence - dissolve 1 ounce of the herb's essential oil in a pintof alcohol; this method preserves the volatile oils of many

    plants, which are not water-soluble.

Poultice - to make a poultice, you just crush the medicinalparts of the plant to a pulpy mass and heat. Mix with a hot, sticky substance such as moist flour or corn meal. Apply the

pasty mixture directly to the skin. Wrap a hot towel around andmoisten the towel periodically. A poultice will draw impuritiesfrom the body.

Herb Bath - herbal baths include the use of various herbaladditives to enhance the natural healing power of the water. They are baths to which plant decoctions or infusions have been

added. There are full and partial herbal baths. For a fullbath some of the medicinal plant parts should be sewn into acloth bag and then boiled in a quart of water; the strainedmixture is then added to the bath. Sometimes you can put the

bag right into the tub for a more thorough extraction of theherbal properties.
