First Civ. of China- Xia (Shyah) or Shang Dynasty?
• One of the first great emperors of China was Yu the Great. According to legend, he chased away a dragon that caused floods. He then dug canals with the help of other dragons. Legend states that the Yu started the first empire the Xia (Shyah) about 2000 years ago
• Because archeologists can not find any historical evidence to support this legend, based on written records most consider the fist Chinese Dynasty to be the Shang Dynasty and consider the story of Yu and the Xia dynasty a myth.
• The Shang established many of the practices still practices today in China
• During the Shang Dynasty, they developed Bronze and carved many artifacts which are in museums around the world today
According to legend, he dug the first channels to control flood water with the help of a Dragon's tail

Period of Warring States- Chinese Philosophy develop
• Eventually however, the aristocrats (wealthy rulers) of China fought with each other over land and China went into a Civil War. This is called the Period of Warring States in which no one dynasty had control of China
• During this time 3 major Chinese Philosophers/Philosophies formed
• 1. Confucius- Confucianism (each person has certain duties) 2. Laozi- Daoism (people shouldn’t be greedy and live a simple life) 3. Hanfeizi-Legalism (people should have harsh punishments to force people to do their duty)
• During this time, the tradition of filial piety (the responsibility of children to obey their parents started in china and is still practiced in many parts of China today

1,500 miles is enough distance to get from Orlando, Florida to Toronto Canada
If you started in Orlando, and went north, how far do you think the Great Wall would travel?

Acupuncture- a Chinese practice of inserting fine needles through the skin at specific points to treat disease or relieve
pain
The Silk Road
No matter which way they traveled it was not an easy route…they had to travel mountains, rivers, deserts, sea, and many uncomfortable weather patterns like
monsoons and sandstorms,
The Silk Road
Ideas also spread along the Silk Road…Buddhism which originated in India spread into China
