Note: Some ancestors of Cynthia Sickler and Melissa Miller were clearly “Descendants of Dutchess County, New York.” For the Sicklers of Beekman Patent, Dutchess, they could only lease land there, All these families would be motivated to migrate to Wyoming Valley, PAafter 1766 in order to own their own land. Dutchess County, NY, is the area shown in red on the map. It borders Connecticut. Someimmigrants were from the Palatinate (such as the Sicklers) and others (Millers, Phillips, and Whites) were English who from RI, MA, VTor CT. Beekman named after Henry Beekman, who received grant for the land from the British Crown in 1697. That Susannah Phillipswas born in Vermont may indicate her family retreated from war-torn Wyoming County temporarily. In a book called "Settlers of theBeekman Patent" by renowned Beekman historian Frank J. Doherty it is stated Mary’s (13) parents were Joshua Burtch and AnnaChamplin. Both buried in Beekman Cemetery, Poughquag. It is also known the Burtches lived near the Sicklers in Beekman.

** “traditions” that someone was “born in Holland” can bemisleading. Immigrants from the Palatinate usually docked inports in the Netherlands, and babies were of course born there.People “sailed from Rotterdam” along the routes. Yet, they areof German or Swiss or even English ancestry and not Dutch.

Our Cynthia Sickler (3)should not be confused withher aunt Cynthia Sickler.

Some trads say P. Sickler’s wife (13) was Mary Vanderburg, not Mary Burtchand the “V” in George Sickler ’s (6) name was for Vanderburg. Earliest historiessay she was Mary Burtch; it is proven Sicklers and Burtches lived side by side.

Enrolled as Pvt Jan 10, 1776 in Pownal, VT with Col. Seth Warner's Green Mountain Boys. Marched to Quebec and served 4 months and 17 days. Re-enlisted Nov1, 1776, in David Goff's Co. in Col. Merrick's Reg. Re-enlisted June, 1777 for 27 days. Later served in Capt. Blanchard's PA Co. Also enlisted Dutchess Co. NY, June,1779 with Capt. Head's New York troops. Placed on the pension roll of Luzerne Co., Pa. 1834 for service in the Vermont militia. • The tradition that Mary Franklin(11) was an Aunt of Benjamin Franklin comes in part from Mary and Arthur’s grandson Abel Aylsworth (variant spelling), who, when 79 years of age, stated that he"was named Abel by his grandmother, called Aunt Mary, the wife of Arthur, and was so named for her brother, Abel Franklin, the uncle of Benjamin Franklin." Arthur Aylesworth or Ayyworth Sr (20) settled in Quidnesset Neck, North King's Towne, Washington Co., RI, where he was appointed an inspector Feb. 6, 1699; elected a Ratemaker in May 1699; and a Viewer of Fences and Supervisor of Highways on Jun. 5, 1699.

There is controversy as to parents of John PHILLIPS (8) born 1696.Some say his mother was Elizabeth FOOTMAN, who is referred to in one 19th century reference with no supporting documents. Others suspect Ruth BURDICK was John’s mother. Another possibility is MaryMOWRY, who married James Phillips and had a son John born “after1694.” However, John’s paternal PHILLIPS line is more well known and itis quite likely that he was a grandson of Michael Phillips of Newport, whowas the progenitor of all Rhode Island Phillips families.

Mary Franklin’s family came from Boston; the immigrant was possibly William Franklin.Previously the Franklin (Francklyne) families were of Ecton, Northamptonshire,England., formerly of Abbeville, Picardy, France, where the spelling was Francquelin inthe early 1500s. In France the Francquelins were wool drapers.

Some sources say John Phillips (8) was born inWest Greenwich but that is not likely, since thefirst land there was purchased from Indians in1709 and John and Sarah’s daughter Freelovewas born in East Greenwich in 1725. WestGreenwich was incorporated in 1741. Thebirths of John (8) and Sarah (9) are recorded inWest Greenwich vital records, but after the factand they were probably born elsewhere.

Thomas Bull (14) was one of the founders of Hartford, Connecticut. At age 25 on 11 Sep 1635, he sailed from Sandwich, England, on the Hopewell,Capt. Babb commanding. Came to Massachusetts Colony in Boston or Cambridge until the following spring when he was enrolled in a company of volunteers sent to aid the new settlementin Connecticut. Served under Capt. John Mason in the Pequot war in 1637. Land was granted to five of Capt. Mason's companions for their service against the Pequots. In his will in 1684 Thomas Bull called this property the “Great Swamp Land received from the Country.” Thomas and Susanna Bull are buried in the old Center ChurchBurying Ground. Stone reads: “Here lyeth the body of Capt. Thomas Bull, who died October 1684. He was one of the first settlers of Hartford; a lieutenant in the great and decisive battle with the Peqots at Mystic May 27th 1637; and Commander of the Fort at Saybrook in July, 1675,when its surrender was demanded by Major Andross.” Thomas Bull's name is included among the 101 inscribed on the monument erected inmemory of the first settlers of Hartford.

The disproved rumor that President AbrahamLincoln was not the biological son of ThomasLincoln was first circulated by his political opponents during his nomination for president in1860. In Lincoln’s time a total of 16 individuals were claimed to be his actual father. Among thesewas Abraham Enloe. The Enloe claims have beendisproved by Edward Steers, Jr. Steers writes “The legend that a man named Abraham Enloefathered a boy whose mother was named NancyHanks may be true, but the woman clearly was not the Nancy Hanks who married Thomas Lincolnand the baby was not Abraham Lincoln whobecame the 16th President.” Steers adds, “TheNorth Carolina tradition has no documentation (primary records) of any sort, and fails when challenged by all the existing documentation thatdoes exist. It is based exclusively on one man’swritings decades after Lincoln’s death, and to nothing more.”

The family’s church in Newport was “First Baptist Church.”

NOTES ON RHODE ISLAND TOWNSProvidence was founded in 1636. In 1730, theTown of Providence was divided into four towns:Providence, Smithfield, Scituate and Glocester.Newport, Rhode Island, was founded in 1639.Land was first granted to 47 people in place to be called East Greenwich, RI on Oct. 31, 1677.Many of these settlers to East Greenwich werefrom the Newport area. Land in area of WestGreenwich first purchased June 30, 1709. TheTown of West Greenwich was set off from EastGreenwich and incorporated by the GeneralAssembly on April 6, 1741.

OUR FAMILIES’ MOVEMENTSOur Rhode Island branches, the PHILLIPS andrelated families in our line, migrated from Englandduring the Great Puritan Migration of the 1630s.That was to the Massachusetts Bay Colony.Eventually, these “Rhode Island ancestors”became dissidents to the Massachusetts BayColony’s religious doctrines. They went with leaders such as Anne Hutchinson, ObadiahHolmes and Roger Williams to Rhode Island. Ourspecific line seems to have gone first to Newport. Then north to East Greenwich and then to WestGreenwich. There they met with other brancheswho had come to Providence from MassachusettsBay colony. After this many traveled to Pownal, VTand Dutchess Co. New York, and eventually toeastern Pennsylvania. This pattern of migration isconsistent with other families the PHILLIPS familywas long associated with, such as MOWRY,INMAN, LATHAM, CLARKE, CRANDALL, MATTESON, etc. and families in our line such as WEST, AYLESWORTH, BURDICK, PIERCEand HOLMES.

BARNWELLNAME

The name Barnwell is Norman-Irish and appears tohave been derived from “Berneval” (or Barneval orBarneville) during the 11th century or much earlier.

During the 12th Century Sir Michael de Berneval orBarneval was the first of the family who settled inIreland landing at Beerhaven in the county of Cork. This was during the period of conquest of Irelandby Strongbow, in the reign of Henry II. According torecords, Berneval landed in Beerhaven, Cork, before Strongbow landed in Leinster. He is alsomentioned in the records of the Tower of London,London, England as one of the chief captains of theexpedition to Ireland in 1172. Sir Michael was adirect descendant to Alanus de Berneval, who wasa successful soldier and “Companion in Arms” tothe famous Norman Invader, William the Conqueror.

“In 1078 the Conqueror, having pursued the insurgent Saxons to the Roman wall, returned toYork in triumph, and there bestowed upon Roger de Barneville the manor of Newton in Cleveland, and various other lands which his immediatedescendants possessed until the 14th century.”

Person 13, Isabelle Le DeSpencer wasCountess of Arundel

Hugh III of Winchester,le Despencer (26) was an accomplished yet tragic historicalfigure. He was the son of Hugh (the Elder) le Despencer and Alinele Basset. Appointed Constable of Odiham Castle 1294. Appointed Constable of the Castles of Devises and Marlborough in 1307. Appointed Constable of the Castle of Strigoil and Keeper of the Town of Chepstow 1307. Was at Battle of Bannockburn June 24, 1314. Appointed Constable of the Marlborough Castle in 1321. Created Earl of Winchester May 10, 1322. Baron Le Despencer. In 1294, was made governor of Oldham Castle, Co. Southampton. The Despencers (Spencers) eventually reached great power, then became political adversaries to King Edward II. Eventually, Hugh the Elder was executed, hanged upon “a gallows in sight of the king and his son” on St. Dennis Day in Oct., 1326. Hugh the Elder ’s body was hung up for four days, and then fed to dogs. Hugh Despencer, the Younger, was impeached before Parliament and received sentence and was “drawn upon a hurdle, with trumps and trumpets, throughout all the city of Hereford" and hanged, which sentence was executed on a gallows 50 feet high, upon St. Andrew’s eve, 1326. Hugh, Jr., was then quartered and the four quarters set up in different places, and his head was set up on London Bridge, December 4, 1326. However he was an ancestor of Sir WinstonLeonard Spencer Churchill and from the family of ancestors of Charles Lindbergh and Lady Diana and her sons William and Harry, current Princes of England.

John Wentworth’s (16) father’s line is known back toReynold (Rynold) De WYNTERWADE probably bornFrance who died after 1066 in York, England

This Beaumont line traces back to Henry I "Beauclerc" Kingof England (1100-1135 AD) and his father WILLIAM I "CONQUEROR" and mother Mathilda of Flanders. Henry I’s nickname "Beauclerc", means “fine scholar”).

Henry I 'Beauclerc'

Preceding BEAUMONTLINE (20): Henry I’s ancestors include Richard I 'The Fearless' Normandy; Richard II 'The Good' Normandy; Robert I Normandy; ConanI Count of Bretagne; Judith Princess Of Brittany; William I 'The Conqueror' England; Fulbert De Falaise; Harlette De Falaise; Arnold II, Count of FlandersBaudouin IV 'Barbatus' of Flanders; Baldwin V Count of Flanders; Frederick I, Count of Luxemburg; Ermentrude, Countess Of Luxemburg; Matilda Countess OfFlanders, who became Queen; Hugh Capet, King of France; Robert II 'The Pious' King of France; Adelaide Princess Of Aquitaine; Adele (Alix) Princess France;Count William III Taillefer; Constance De Toulouse, Queen of France; and many more back into antiquity.

ORIGIN OF THE NAME SPENCERThe patronymic Spencer it is said, had its origin in thetitle of the office of "dispensator," so called in Latin and"le dispenser" in Norman French, by historians andantiquarians generally rendered Steward. This officewas attached to the Court or household of William theConqueror and was held by Robert who accompaniedthe Conqueror in his invasion of England and hence hewas called in the Latin records, "Robert le dispensator."So the name does not mean “of Spencer.”
