Phillip Watts (b. ca. 1795) was the son of Berryman Watts and his wife

Mary who settled in Columbus County (then Bladen) before 1763. Phillip

married Dicey. I am seeking her maiden name. I would also like to see any

deeds or documents that offer proof of the children of Phillip Watts.

Currently I have listed Goldeberry and Anna Eliza, but I don't have proof

for either. My ancestor, Anna Eliza Watts (b. ca. 1823), married Jordan

"Jird" Soles (b. May 1816), supposedly a son of Joshua Soles. Phillips

Watts is recorded as deeding land to Jordan Soles and family tradition has it thatAnnaEliza's maiden name was Watts.

In the 1850 Horry County, census Jerdan Souls, is listed as head of household # 79,with his wife A. E., and 4 children, he his wife and 3 children are listed as born inNorth Carolina, he is living 2 doors away from Allagood Suggs, and his family. Arethey related??? (WSH)

Better geta cup of coffee or something. First of all, I don't know how old you are, so you maynot remember a TV show called, "You Were There." The show presented a moment inhistory as if it were current news, rather like we saw the Gulf War on TV. I rememberseeing one of the segments when I was little that dealt with some Confederate soldierswho were captured by the Yankees and imprisoned beside a river. They escaped andtried to swim to safety but only two of the dozen or so soldiers made it. The restdrowned. The story fascinated me for some reason and I remembered it later on whena cousin of ours named Ressie Mae came to Florida from North Carolina for a visitand told a similar story about one of our own forebears. The story simmered in theback of my consciousness for years, until sometime in the 1980's I made a trip toSandy Plain. I think I was related to virtually everyone in the area and I asked aboutthe story. One of the cousins referred me to Arthur Norris, who was then in his 80sand legally blind. Even though I had never met this cousin and his wife, they invitedme into their home and were eager to talk about our ancestors. I asked about thesoldier who had escaped from the Yankee prison and Arthur warmed to the story. Iwill try to relate to you in his words as much as I remember them. He told me this:"Well, that would be my grandfather, Charles Calvin Soles. He and some other boyswere captured by the Yankees and put in prison by a big river. I don't remember thename of the river, but it were wide and deep and had a fast current. It was a stinkinghole and them boys decided to try to escape. They got out all right, but they had toswim the river. Grandpa were a good swimmer and one of them boys knowed that. He

Page 7: Ancestors of Frances E. SOLES Frances E.1 SOLES

clumb up on grandpa's back and tried to hang on. Made grandpa mad and he hit himhard. That made the boy mad, too, and give him the strength to fight the river. Himand grandpa got across to safety on the other side. Them other boys drowned. Afarmer driving by in a hay wagon stopped and picked them up. He hid them under hisload of hay and smuggled them past enemy lines to Confederate territory. Grandpacome back here [to Sandy Plain] and run a tavern right down the road. One night afellow come in and started chasin Grandpa around the tavern with a gun. Shot him. They took Grandpa home in a wagon. Thought he were dead. But he weren't. Comeback to run the tavern again. Lived to be 47 years old." Lucky for me, too, or Iwouldn't be here. Arthur and his wife were delightful people, warm and welcoming. Ifelt at home with them immediately. I'm sure they have passed away by now. Arthurtold me that his grandmother lived many years longer than Charles Calvin and thatArthur remembered her well. Ironically, my daughter's company just sent her toRaleigh-Durham for a meeting at their headquarters. She will be in the area throughthis weekend and was going to try to get down to Sandy Plain to see whateverrelatives she could find. We were both rather excited about it. We live in San Diegoso we don't get that way often. I also have photographs of Charles Calvin, his wife, and several other ancestors from around the same time frame. I can scan them in andsend them to you if you don't already have them. This research is fun but it can be sofrustrating! By the way, where do the Norrises fit in with your family? Are we cousinsumpty times removed or just leaves on the far sides of the tree? Regards, Dorothy

Surname: Soles, Soule, Holway

I have a deed that appears to be a 'sibling transaction' that lists about 10 people oneof which is Isaiah Soles. The 10 listed are Soles family members. It appears that theland described once belonged to Joshua Soles and for this reason, most researchersassign Joshua as the father of the group. Although I have the deed, I have not done theresearche to verify if this is true. A similar deed also exists for Joshua's siblings and itappears that they were the children of Joseph Soule who was the initial owner of theland. This Joseph Soule may be/probably is the Joseph Soule who is listed in theMayflower book as having been born in 1731 to Benjamin Soule and Mary Holway.Joseph Soule settled in what is now the Columbus County area. However, the recordsare hard to trace and interpret since Joseph had brothers and 1st cousins who settledthere with him and who also used many of the same names.

Date: 8/11/1999 10:52:23 PM Eastern Daylight Time From:[email protected] (J Bordeaux) To: [email protected] (Marion McGee)I'm digging myself in a hole here. I just looked at the real deed. The name is definitelyJesse Spivey. The old writing made it look like Luke since the letter s is so tall. On 3December, 1846, John B. Norris, Jordan Sowel, Mary Sowel, and Jesse Spivey for$15.50 convey to Isaiah Sowels 66 acres on Simmons Branch beginning at BlackGum. The witness was Caleb Spivey. The deed was proved by the oath of RobertCartrette. I'm not sure why Jesse Spivey would be in the above deed because I ampostive the others were Soles family members. The deed even mentions "if ElizabethSowels rights good ours good and if not we are exempted." So, I think we shouldscratch Elizabeth Soles as a child of Joshua Soles from the earlier 1835 deed. ThisElizabeth is clearly Elizabeth Cartrette Soles and she is still living in 1846. Sheparticipated in the 2 deeds in 1835 between Benjamin Soles, Jackson Tyler, BarnabasWatts, Jordan Soles, Luke Soles, Mary Soles, Rebecca Soles, and Isaiah Soles. I'lltype them them up to clear up the confusion here. I suppose it is still possible thatJackson Tylers wife was Elizabeth Soles. This is what others have sent me. I wasconfused before because there was an Elizabeth Soles in the deeds and because Ithought Jesse Spivey married Elizabeth Soles. Now you see why I originally listedJesse Spivey's wife as a Soles.

Although I have seen the name spelled various ways, my Holways are pretty

consistent about the way they spelled it. They are all from Sandwich,

Massachusetts, having emigrated there from England circa 1637. All the

records I've collected focus on the family in Sandwich. I do not know

specifically of any of my lines who went to New York. However, there are

several in Sandwich who married into Allen families and I know there are

many Allens in New York! If your search narrows down to any Holways from

Cape Cod, let me know and perhaps I can help. Good luck!

I am also a descendent of Joseph Holloway from England as are Holways on

the cape. I was wondering if you have any info on his lineage in England?

I have posted my family tree on the Familytreemaker.com web page and

while there is much confusion in the spelling, I have found it consistent

thru Rhode Island and Connecticut. Out on the Cape it is consistently

Holway. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I haven't been able to find any information on the English ancestry of

the Joseph HOLWAY who settled in Sandwich on Cape Cod. The Holway

genealogy (Holway-Rich Heritage) had some theories, but nothing

conclusive. I believe their best guess was "West Anglia" and they also

discussed instance of Holways found near Taunton, England.

Joseph Holway (1662-1732)is the son of Joseph Holway Jr. (c.1636-1692)

Southworth, Constant

A 1620 Mayflower passenger, George Soule arrived as a servant to Edward

Winslow. He became a Purchaser and was on the 1633 list of freemen. He

moved to Duxbury and acquired considerable amounts of land in other

places. Soule was a volunteer in the Pequot War and in 1642 was a deputy

for Duxbury. He married a Mary, whose surname possibly was Becket. He

died in 1679. His will, dated 11 August 1677, with codicil 20 September

1677, proved 1679, named his sons Nathaniel, George, and John, and his

daughters Elizabeth, Patience, Susannah, and Mary. He also had sons

Zachariah and Benjamin who predeceased him. MF 3, with its necessary

Addendum, gives his first five generations. The Soule family history

compiled by Gideon T. Ridlon is not reliable.

Arriving on the Anne in 1623, Mary Becket is said to have married Mayflowerpassenger George Soule prior to the 1637 cattle division (MF-3). Nothing is knownabout her origin in England*, and identification as George Soule's wife is based on herknown presence in Plymouth in 1623, on Soule being unmarried that year, on herdisappearance from records thereafter, on Soule having a wife name Mary (p.244) inthe 1627 division, and on there being no other known Mary to assign as his wife.
