The Nose

• The nose consists of the external nose and the nasal cavity,

• Both are divided by a septum into right and left halves.

EXTERNAL NOSE

Pyramidal shaped, with its root up and the base directed

downIt has osteocartilaginous framework covered by

muscles and skin

External Nose

• The external nose has two elliptical orifices called the naris (nostrils), which are separated from each other by the nasal septum.

• The lateral margin, the ala nasi, is rounded and mobile.

BONY PART• The framework of

the external nose is made up above by the nasal bones, the frontal processes of the maxillae, and the nasal part of the frontal bone.

CARTILAGENOUS PART

UPPER LATERAL CARTILAGE situated below the inferior margin of the nasal bone, and is flattened, and

triangular in shapesuperior margin is attached to the

nasal bone and the frontal process of the maxilla; its inferior margin is

connected by fibrous tissue with the greater alar cartilage.

Greater alar cartilage (lower lateral cartilage) is a thin,

flexible plate, situated immediately below the

lateral nasal cartilage, and bent upon itself in such a manner as

to form the medial wall and lateral wall of the naris of its

own side.

LESSER ALAR CARTILAGE the part of the nose which forms the lateral wall is curved to correspond with the ala of the nose; it is oval and flattened, narrow behind, where it is

connected with the frontal process of the maxilla by a tough fibrous membrane

Septal nasal cartilagecontinuous with the anterior margins

of the lateral cartilages; below, it is connected to the medial crura of the

greater alar cartilages by fibrous tissue.

Its posterior margin is connected with the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid

; its inferior margin with the vomer and the palatine processes of the

maxillae.

Blood Supply of the External Nose

• The skin of the external nose is supplied by branches of the ophthalmic and the maxillary arteries.• The skin of the ala and the lower

part of the septum are supplied by branches from the facial artery.

Nerve Supply of the External Nose

• The infratrochlear and external nasal branches of the ophthalmic nerve (CN V) and the infraorbital branch of the maxillary nerve (CN V).
