We have succumbed to the fash-ion of foregoing the sign of crosseither when asked to pray for ameeting or when praying in andwith the public. Or when we arein a restaurant, we just make the

tiniest possible sign of the cross to avoid arresting

the attention of other diners. Are we ashamedthat we have to make the sign of the cross beforewe pray? Are we ashamed to profess faith in theBlessed Trinity? If tolerating other creeds forcesus to relinquish our identity, our sublimedorines, then let us renounce that tolerance. Letus end this nonsense! It is high time for heretics tofeel squeamish when the Truth slaps them smackon their faces whenever we invoke the TriuneGodhead in the sign of the cross!

    * * *Which also goes for kneeling. We must kneel before the Lord

even if we must break our knees.Nobody can truly eak of re-e unless they have knownwhat ree to the Lord is. Arewe afraid people would mock us when wekneel? Should we care if we soil our trousersand skirts? Kneel to the Lord, in church or inthe street. Do not listen to them who did notdie upon the Cross to atone for your sins!

    * * *Saints are not fairies. ey do notgrant us our wishes. What they

do is much more Christian thansatisfying our every whim. eyhelp us pray to God that Hegrant us that which is conducive

to our station in life and to our salvation. So thenext time you do not snag that job you have beenaiming at for God-knows-how-long, or you failthat final exam you needed to ace to stay academi-cally afloat, do not chastise Saint Rita for beinginept, or accuse Saint Joseph of Cupertino of be-ing an idler. Perhaps some other job deserves youbetter, or perhaps an exam should see you study-ing beforehand instead of gallivanting around.

    * * *Some Catholics harbour a deepaffeion for relics that borderon the psychotic and the necro-mantic. Relics are to be exposedfor the veneration of the faith-ful, not kept at home as an amu-let that gives advantage over earthly foes, oramassed in order to boast of their number andmultiply their efficacy. Relics are objes ofdevotion, not horcruxes! When we face theFinal Judgment, God will not ask us to submitan inventory of the relics we possessed.

At the end of each decade, the Marian ejaculation is usually said. Prior to the emer-

gence of the Fatima prayer, Catholics in Spanish countries recited the O Mara, Madrede gracia, which is then followed by the sung verse Virgen, divino sagrario.

e two middle lines of the Virgen, divino sagrarioare changed depending on the myster-ies being meditated upon. For joyful mysteries, gozos, and ellos are used. For sorrowfulmysteries, eitherpenas and ellas are used, ordolores diremos replacesglorias cantaremos.

Here is a sample music from the Walled City.

Here is an example from the Visayas.

tated, undoubtedly, by the exponentiateddisappearance of Spanish in almost allplaces in the country.

Filipino Catholics share this traditionwith Catholics in Hianic countries. epraice probably began in the augustcathedrals of Spain, together with the

gozos, and read by Spanish missionariesin the New World, as a means of catech-esis and conversion. It has been said thatthe Rosary is the authentic Catholicstudy of Holy Writ, and, considering itsorigins, we can conclude thus. e Ro-sary began as a praice of hermits andanchorites of reciting all psalms. euse of the beads began as a way of track-ing which psalm is already being recited.Pebbles were first used, and soon they

were conneed to form a circlet. In those ages, not all Christians could

recite the psalms. First, copies of theScriptures were limited and too expensiveto reproduce (they had to be chained to

Mozarabic Spain. We find ourselvesagain!in a similar danger brought aboutby the same religion, Islam, and that is thereason I would like us to invoke the inter-cession of Our Lady of the Pillar, la Vir-

    gen del Pilar.

e [image of the] Nuestra Seora delPilar was our Ladys way of strengtheningthe weakening faith of Saint James theApostle. In order to assure Saint Jamesthat our Lady would accompany him inhis troubles as he proclaimed the Goel, our Lady commanded the Angels to en-trust to Saint James this image of herselfas Our Lady of the Pillar. If there is any-thing which we should ask Our Lady ofthe Pillar, it is really a prayer, a petition,

for the strengthening of our faith, ee-cially in our time, when it is easy for peo-ple to water down the Faith, in a timewhen secularism is forcing the CatholicChurch to rethink Her dorines. Andthat is unfortunate! [] Because it is notthe dorine of Christ that must adjustand convert to the secular mentality, butthat it is secularism that must be convert-ed to the Catholic Faith. []

A woman praised our Lady becauseher womb was so privileged; she bore in itthe Son of God. And her breasts were soprivileged because with them she fedGods Only-begotten Son. But our Lordcorreed the woman and revealed to thewoman the real nature of the blessednessof Mary. He said: Blessed are they whohear the word of God, and keep them.

At the Visitation, Saint Elisabeth, inired by the Holy Spirit, praised Mary

for her faith: Blessed are you because youhave believed everything that was re-vealed to you by God. And so Mary isrightfully pillar of faith. She is rightfullyNuestra Seora del Pilar. Let us run to her, call on to her, entrust ourselves to her,and pray to her: Holy Mary, help us inour faith, help us because our faith isweak, and we are about to fall.

desks to prevent theft). Second, not eve-ryone could read. So monks in monaster-ies, around which the first cities of Europebegan, replaced the psalms with prayers:the Lords Prayer, the Angelic Salutationin particular, the Minor Doxology, &c. Itis by this provenance that the Rosary is

also called as Marys Psalter.e mysteries were then introducedto guide Christians in the meditation ofHoly Writ. ey were not fixed for a longtime, and the current division of the Ro-sary into joyful, sorrowful and gloriousmysteries is what most Catholics recog-nise as the Dominican form. As a piouspraice, the Rosary varies in form as perregion in Christendom, but the corestruure is universal. Singing the Rosary

is one way of praying it. And what a beau-tiful and wondrous a way it is for SaintAugustine, meditating on the psalms, wasmoved to declare that singing well andwith a good intention is praying twice!

    Virgen, divino sagrario,vuestras glorias* cantaremos,

Amn, Jess.

    LATIN IN MASS

    The Catholic Church has adopted

Latin as Her official language be-cause She is the Universal Church. Shehas been appointed to teach all nationsand, consequently, for Her, no nationalbarriers can exist. To say the Mass in anational language, however convenient itmight be, would be unworkable in theCatholic Church simply because She isCatholic. Her oneness of faith is typifiedin Her oneness in eech.
