Front-End Engineering andDesign (FEED) is a segment of theplanning and engineering phase ofa plant construction project. FEEDwork is done after conceptual busi-ness planning and prior to detaildesign. During the FEED phase, bestopportunities exist for cost and timesavings for the entire project, as
changes and modifications have theleast financial and timing impact tothe project during this phase.
Siemens Process Analytics, withits analytical systems integrationgroup, holds a unique blend ofanalytical expertise, process andprocess control knowledge andsolution packages and has vastexperience of providing analyticalsystems. Therefore, Siemens Pro-cess Analytics has best capabilities
to provide clients with a wide scopeof FEED services in process analytics.
Front-End Engineeringand DesignProcess plant owners and EPC con-
tractors are facing ever increasing
pressure for enhancing plant effi-
ciency, reliability, availability and
safety to maximize Return on Invest-
ment (ROI) while minimizing thecapital expenditure.
Huge investments in plants are
defined in the early design phases
i.e. feasibility study, design intent
memorandum and tender specifica-
tion. Ability to influence costs is sig-
nificant during the FEED phase but
decreases during ongoing project
implementation. Decisions made in
these initial phases (Front-End) of a
project are crucial to long term plant
performance, safety, costs andhence ROI. Optimal technical solu-
tions defined in the Front-End can
lead to large benefits. Hence, with
small costs, FEED provides the best
opportunity to influence the ROI.
During the FEED phase, Siemens in-
teracts closely with the plant owner/
EPC contractor and furnishes the en-
gineering and design documents for
optimal analytical solutions specific
to the plant.
In case of up-gradiation projects,Siemens assesses the condition of
analytical systems in the existing
plant and recommends the best
possible solutions/strategy for their
up-gradiation.
The mission of Siemens analytics
FEED is to help the customers and
their associates in identifying and
providing optimal technical solu-
tions for new projects and old plants
needing up-gradiation.

FEED as crucial part of Project Implementation Stages
Feed in project implemen-tation stagesinclude, with some overlapping, plan-ning, design, procurement, construc-tion and operation. FEED is part of plan-ning and design and comprises processanalysis, conceptual design, and basicengineering, Fig. 2.
Generally, major elements of FEEDinclude
Analytical project review
Engineering analysis
Engineering report withrecommendations
Project design
Establishing concepts
Reviewing alternatives
Identifying opportunities
Capacity analysis of equipment
Identification of increasingperformance
In case of Siemens ProcessAnalytics, FEED activities include inter-actions with owner/EPC contractor, analyzing the plant analytical require-ments, preparing strategy for optimalanalytical solutions, furnishing basicengineering and design documents anddrawings. For up-gradation projects,Siemens visits the existing plant andevaluates the condition of existing ana-lytical systems in close cooperation withthe plant operators and recommendsthe optimal strategy for renovation orreplacement.
As the final performance and the cost-of-ownership of a production site is veryoften significantly influenced by theperformance of the chosen process ana-lytical equipment and its system design, the efforts taken in early design andengineering phase will have a strongimpact on the over-all ROI of the wholeinvest (see Fig 1).
