STUDENT – AMY WICHELOW Music Video – “Spectrum” by Florence and the Machine

I think that Amy’s video is a great example of a performance video. Although I am looking to do more of a narrative style, I am considering mixing it with a small bit of performance, and Amy has captured that element extremely well in her video. The performer she has used has clearly taken the project seriously as she uses a variety of facial expressions in order to capture the audience and make the video easy and enjoyable to watch. I think that this is essential in a performance video as if the performer is not committed, it makes the video seem unprofessional and of a low standard, which is what I want to completely avoid. Amy has made sure to include a range of different outfits and hair & make-up choices to continuously re-establish the audience’s attention and keep them interested. This also showcases the personality of the artist and develops a personal relationship with the audience.

One particular aspect of the video that I like is the use of lighting. As soon as the music video starts there is a close up of a sparkler, which I think sets the scene really nicely. Fairy lights, candles and artificial lights are also used which add to the light element and connotes happiness and joy which emphasises the ‘feel good’ feeling the video puts across.

Another aspect of the video that works really well is the dancing in a black room with artificial lights. It demonstrates the talent of the artist and also varies what is on screen which makes the video more interesting and captures the attention of the audience well.

I think that occasionally the lip syncing is a bit off and doesn’t look believable, however I think that this is a hard thing to achieve and Amy has done an excellent job at making it as believable as possible.

From watching Amy’s music video I have decided that using many different lights would make the video interesting and I shall be doing this when I make my music video.
