Hong Kong is an externally oriented economy. Goods consumed locally and for exports are both largely based on imports. This article analyses the performance of Hong Kong’s imports of goods in recent years.

1.1 Hong Kong is an externally oriented economy. In 2020, the value of Hong Kong’s total exports of goods amounted to $3,927.5 billion, while that of imports of goods was $4,269.8 billion. The ratio of the value of total exports of goods to Hong Kong’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was 1.5, while that of the value of imports of goods to GDP was 1.6.

1.2 Goods consumed locally in Hong Kong and for exports are both largely based on imports. This article analyses the performance of Hong Kong’s imports of goods in recent years.
2. 2. Performance of Hong Kong’s imports

2.1 Table 1 presents the values of Hong Kong’s external merchandise trade in 2010, 2015 and 2020.

2.2 The value of Hong Kong’s total exports of goods increased from $3,031.0 billion in 2010 to $3,927.5 billion in 2020. This represented an average annual rate of increase at 2.6%. (Table 1)

2.3 Performance of Hong Kong’s imports of goods basically tracked that of total exports in the past decade. The value of imports increased from $3,364.8 billion in 2010 to $4,269.8 billion in 2020. This represented an average annual rate of increase at 2.4%. (Table 1)

2.4 Chart 1 presents the year-on-year percentage changes in the value index, unit value index and quantum index of Hong Kong’s imports of goods during the period from 2011 to 2020.

2.6 Unit value index is a measure of change in price of external merchandise trade. During 2011 to 2020, year-on-year increases were recorded in the unit value index of imports for all years, except in 2015, 2016 and 2020. (Chart 1)

2.7 Quantum index is a measure of change in volume of external merchandise trade, with the effect of price changes discounted. During 2011 to 2020, year-on-year increases were recorded in the volume index of imports for all years, except in 2015, 2019 and 2020. (Chart 1)
3. 3. Imports of goods by major trading
partner 3.1

3.1 Statistics on imports of goods can be analysed by supplier or origin.
3.2

3.2 Supplier is the country/territory from which the goods were consigned, by any form of transport, to Hong Kong, without any further intermediate commercial transaction. The country/territory from which the goods are consigned is not necessarily the country/territory of origin, manufacture or shipment.

3.3 Origin is the country/territory where a product has undergone manufacturing process that changes permanently and substantially the shape, nature, form or utility of the basic materials used in manufacture.

3.5 In 2020, the mainland of China (the Mainland) and Taiwan were the two largest suppliers of Hong Kong’s imports. (Table 2)

3.6 The value of imports from the Mainland increased from $1,529.8 billion in 2010 to $1,923.5 billion in 2020. This represented an average annual rate of increase at 2.3%. In 2020, imports from the Mainland accounted for 45.1% of the value of Hong Kong’s imports. Compared to the share of 45.5% in 2010, this represented a slight decrease of 0.4 percentage point. (Table 2)

3.7 Meanwhile, the value of imports from Taiwan increased from $224.8 billion in 2010 to $405.7 billion in 2020. This represented an average annual rate of increase at 6.1%. In 2020, imports from Taiwan accounted for 9.5% of the value of Hong Kong’s imports. (Table 2)

3.8 Other major suppliers of Hong Kong’s imports were Singapore, Korea and Japan. In 2020, they accounted for 7.4%, 5.8% and 5.6% of the value of Hong Kong’s imports respectively. (Table 2)

3.10 During the period 2010 to 2020, the Mainland was the largest origin of Hong Kong’s imports. The value of imports of Mainland origin increased from $1,516.9 billion in 2010 to $1,841.7 billion in 2020. This represented an average annual rate of increase at 2.0%. In 2020, imports of Mainland origin contributed 43.1% of the value of Hong Kong’s imports. Compared to the share of 45.1% in 2010, this represented a decrease of 2.0 percentage points. (Table 3)

3.11 Other major origins of Hong Kong’s imports were Taiwan, Korea, Japan and Malaysia. In 2020, they accounted for 12.8%, 6.9%, 5.8% and 4.2% of the value of Hong Kong’s imports respectively. (Table 3)

4.2 In 2020, “electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances, and electrical parts thereof” was the largest commodity group of Hong Kong’s imports. The value of imports of this commodity group increased from $956.8 billion in 2010 to $1,796.5 billion in 2020. This represented an average annual rate of increase at 6.5%. In 2020, the value of imports of this commodity group accounted for 42.1% of the value of Hong Kong’s imports. Compared to the share of 28.4% in 2010, this represented an increase of 13.7 percentage points. (Table 4)

4.3 Other major commodity groups of Hong Kong’s imports included “telecommunications and sound recording and reproducing apparatus and equipment” and “office machines and automatic data processing machines”. In 2020, they accounted for 15.1% and 8.2% of the value of Hong Kong’s imports respectively. (Table 4)

5.1 Table 5 shows the values of Hong Kong’s imports of goods by end-use category in 2010, 2015 and 2020.

5.2 In 2020, “raw materials and semi- manufactures” was the largest end-use category of imports, accounting for 43.8% of Hong Kong’s imports. The value of imports of this category increased from $1,237.9 billion in 2010 to $1,868.5 billion in 2020. This represented an average annual rate of increase at 4.2%. Major items in this category included “electronic components” (accounting for 81.3% of the import value of this end- use category in 2020) and “base metal other than iron and steel” (accounting for 3.5% of the import value of this end-use category in 2020). (Table 5)

5.3 The shares of “capital goods” and “consumer goods” in Hong Kong’s imports were 34.4% and 16.3% respectively in 2020. The value of imports of the former increased from $1,072.7 billion in 2010 to $1,469.7 billion in 2020. This represented an average annual rate of increase at 3.2%. The value of imports of the latter decreased from $811.4 billion in 2010 to $696.4 billion in 2020. This represented an average annual rate of decrease at 1.5%. Major items in “capital goods” included “telecommunications equipment” (accounting for 36.8% of the import value of this end-use category in 2020) and “office machinery” (accounting for 24.2% of the import value of this end-use category in 2020). For the imports of “consumer goods”, major items included “jewellery, precious stones and related articles” (accounting for 27.7% of the import value of this end-use category in 2020) and “clothing” (accounting for 8.6% of the import value of this end-use category in 2020). 5.4 Meanwhile, “foodstuffs” and “fuels” took up relatively small proportions of the value of Hong Kong’s imports, at 3.9% and 1.6% respectively in 2020. (Table 5)
