Canal Cheong Jagerroos|張 彤 茹 b.1968, is a Chinese visual artist grew up in an artistic family in Ma-
cau. She currently lives and works between Helsinki, Shanghai, Nice, Berlin and Tokyo.
Combining the East and the West
The East and the West have been always embracing two different worlds, with completely different cul-
tures. This is something that Canal learned early on in her life, as she has had the privilege to live and
travel around the world. Having different cultures naturally leads to different expression when it comes to
art. What Canal create is an accumulation of cultural pieces that she has encountered from her unique
experience by living in various countries. Along the creative path, Canal would tear apart the physical and
mental boundaries that different cultures can lead to and show that they can coexist in harmony. The eas-
iest way to do that is through art; where no language, explanation or opinion is needed.

Floating Island Overview
One of the main themes for Canal Cheong Jagerroos|張 彤 茹 project ‘Floating Island’ is about the inte-
gration of Eastern and Western culture within the art, combining the two elements in both chaotic and
harmonic inspiring way. By doing this, it is shown that these different ideas (ways of life) ̶ ‘Floating Island’,
so to speak ̶can coexist and flourish together. Another point Canal is focusing on is the fact that we can
find beauty not only in construction but within deconstruction as well. This is something she has discov-
ered while walking the fine line between the east and west.
In the past 30 years, by living and working all over the world namely; Macau, Hong Kong, Shanghai,
France, Switzerland, Italy, Africa, Finland, and a number of other countries and areas, Canal has naturally
come across many cultures, all these different ways of life have in their own way become a piece of her.
All these experiences have moulded her to who she is, and this is reflected in her artwork. This is also
where the floating island’s names arises from as she imagines herself weaving through the world like a
floating island.
Canal Cheong Jagerroos, ‘Floating Island—Context of Innocence’ installation view, Jyväskylä Art Museum, Finland 31.1.2019—31.3.2019
Reconstruction and Deconstruction
Canal is connecting the educational theme of Floating Island that can be taken from the installation exhibi-
tion is “reconstruction and deconstruction.” Making her works is a process filled with building and tearing
apart until she is left with the final product. People see destruction as something negative, but they some-
times forget that the empty space that it leaves behind is an opportunity to fill it with something even
better. This philosophy can be applied nearly any-where in life, whether it is something physical or psycho-
logical.
