The Waterwise Demonstration Garden, which
borders Amtrak Anaheim Station, lends identity
and prominence to the station. Designed to
illustrate the beauty of waterwise landscaping,
the plants were selected for their contrast in
colors, textures and shapes. The garden includes a
water-efficient irrigation system as well. Upon
viewing the garden it will become evident that
water-efficient landscaping and irrigation techniques
can produce a luxurious and abundant landscape.

Principles of Waterwise LandscapINGPrinciples of Waterwise LandscapINGWaterwise gardens offer an amazing diversity of colors, textures,
shapes and sizes. What distinguishes them from traditional landscapes
is their adherence to the following seven principles:
Fortnight Lily
Lily of the Nile
3P R ACTICAL TU R F AR E AS
Turf is the most water thirsty
landscape component. A lawn
uses four times as much water as
anything else in landscaping.
Design lawn areas for practical
purposes such as: play, mainte-
nance access and light traffic.
Bermuda and Buffalo are recog-
nized as good water-efficient
grasses, as are St. Augustine and
Fescue.

You will need to start with a
master plan based upon your site
and your requirements for your
yard. The most important design
element is the grouping of plant
materials of like needs together
(i.e. sun, water). Look at soil
conditions, drainage, wind, sun,
slopes and water-use areas.
Also, assess your needs — what
uses will you make of your out-
door space (i.e. walkways, play
areas, shading, etc.)?

There is a place for every plant in
a waterwise garden—when locat-
ed correctly. Group plants
according to their water and sun
needs, avoiding the waste that
comes from overdosing low-
water-use plants placed near
water-loving ones.
50-80% water savings

The addition of organic matter to
the soil, such as shredded bark or
peat moss, increases water
retention and reduces weeds. Get
to know your soil and amend it
prior to planting.
10-20% water savings

Mulches reduce evaporation, help
keep moisture in, and reduce
weeds. Mulch can include rocks,
wood chips, bark or shredded
wood.

Seasonal irrigation adjustments and
efficiency checks are maintenance
practices that save water. Organic
fertilizers and composting will improve
soil texture and maintain vigorous plant
growth.

A well-planned watering system
can help you avoid over-water-
ing, which not only wastes water
but can be a cause of plant death
and disease. The two most effi-
cient irrigation systems are
underground sprinklers and drip
irrigation.
