    1.1 INTRODUCTION

Due to rapid industrialisation, industrial workers are exposed to several hazards and

accidents every year lakh of workers are injured due to mechanical, chemical, electrical

and radiation hazards and it leads to partial or total disablement. So in recent years, greater

attention is given to health and safety due to pressure from government, trade unions,

labour laws, and awareness of employers. The efficiency of workers depend to a great

extends on the environment in which they work. ork environment consist of all the

factors which wet and react on the body and mind of an employee. The primary aim is to

create an environment which ensures the greatest ease of work and removes all causes of

worries .!ccupational health and safety is a discipline with broad scope involving many

specialised fields. "n its broadest sense, it should aim at

a# The $romotion and %aintenance of highest degree of physical, mental and

social well&being of workers in all occupationsb# The prevention among workers of adverse effects on health caused by their

working conditionsc# The protection of workers in their employment from risks resulting from

factors adverse to healthd# The placing and maintenance of workers in an occupational environment

adapted to physical and mental needse# The adaptation of work to human successful occupational health and safety

practice re'uires the collaboration and participation of both employers and

workers in health and safety programmes and involve the consideration of

issues related to occupational medicine, industrial hygiene, toxicology, education, engineering safety, ergonomics, psychology etc.

ork plays a central role in people(s lives, since most workers spend at least eight hours

a day in the work place, whether it is on plantation, in an office, factory etc. )et this is

not the case for many workers. *very day workers all over the day faced with a multitude

    of health hazards, such as

    Dust

    +ases oise

    -ibration

    *xtreme temperature

Therefore, work environments should be safe and healthy. nfortunately some

employees assume little responsibility for the protection of workers health and safety. "n

fact some employers do not even know that they have the moral and often legal

responsibility to protect workers. /s a result of the hazards and a lack of attention given

to health and safety, work related accidents and diseases are common in all part of the

    world.

1.1 BACKGROUND AND DEFINITION OF THE

    PROBLEM

%ost employees have the expectation that their workplace will offer a safe

environment in which to do work. Some workplaces are safer than others just assome occupations offer more safety than others. orkplace safety ranks high on the

list of goals for most workplace. *mployers care about employee safety.

!ccupational safety and health can be important for moral, legal and financial

reasons. /ll organisations have a duty of care to ensure that employees and any other

person who may be affected by the companies undertaking remains safe at all times.

%ore obligations would involve the protection of employees( lives and health. 0egal

reasons for !S1 practices relate to the $reventative, $unitive and 2ompensatory

effects of laws that protect worker(s safety and health.!S1 can also reduce employee

injury and illness related costs, including medical care, sick leave and disabilitybenefit costs.!S1 may involve interactions among many subject areas, including

occupational, occupational hygiene public health, safety engineering, industrial

engineering, chemistry, physics, ergonomics and occupational health psychology.

1.3 NEED AND SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

1ealth and safety measures are inevitable to any organisations where workers are

involved it(s an organisation(s responsibility to provide to its workers beyond thepayment of wages for their services. The workers health and safety on and off the job

within the organisation is a vital concern of the employer. The working environment in

a factory adversely affects the worker(s health and safety because of the excessive heat

or cold, noise, orders, fumes, dust and lack of sanitation and pure air etc which leads to

accident or injury or disablement or loss of life to the workers. $roviding a health and

safer environment is a pre&re'uisite for any productive effort. There must be held in

check by providing regular health check&up, protective devices and compensatory

benefits to the workers. This research deals with the study of the effectiveness of health

    and safety measures implemented in /$!00! T)3*S 0TD, 4/0/%/SS*3).

    1.4 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

    5. To identify the health and safety measures implemented in /$!00! T)3*S 0TD,

4/0/%/SS*3)6. To identify the health and safety problems in /$!00! T)3*S7. To study how far the company is complying the relevant acts and the rules of health
