There are all sorts of people in the world Some like to take risks where as some like to play it safe. I know many people who are adventurous such as Akshay Kumar and Jackie Chen Here I would like to talk about my cousin who is very adventurous by nature His name is Jatinder. He is 24 years old. He is not very tall but very handsome. I find him an adventurer because he loves to indulge in all sorts of risky and daring

activities. We can learn from him to be daring and brave. He is very expert in riding motorcycles He performs many stunts on his bike. He has also done Bungee jumping in Rishikesh. I saw his video and was awe struck by his confidence. He has also been with his college trip for trekking, white-water rafting, skiing and hiking. He has been injured many times but that does not deter him from doing all these activities. He has also participated in Mountain Dew Nidar which means ‘the fearless’. Recently, he has been approached by a Punjabi film company to work as a stuntman in

their film. He has been offered a handsome package to work in their film.

His parents, however, are not happy with this job. They are very protective towards him. But he has managed to convince his parents. He shall be starting his work soon. I want to be like him but my legs start shaking at the thought of the risk. I remember, once a house in our neighbourhood was on fire. A six year old child was trapped inside. He ran into the house and saved the child. All the people in our locality praised him for his daring nature. He was awarded an appreciation award by our local Rotary Club.

Sundays are usually my days off. I spend all my Sundays differently. Sometimes, I just laze around in bed. Sometimes, I help my mother in household chores. I also do my pending work on my days off. I am very fond of sewing. So, sometimes I sew my clothes on Sundays. At the end of the day-off, I generally feel very relaxed and this day fills me with new energy for

the rest of the week. Here I would like to talk about a day off which I would like to spend with my friends. I would like to go on a picnic with them I would like to go to Pushpa Gujral Science City It is in Kapurthala. It is about 1 hour drive from my home town We would go by bus My cousins went with their school trip last month and they praised it a lot There is so much to see and do there There is an earthquake simulator over there There is also a planetarium There is a laser show also There is a dome theatre which is the biggest in India. My cousins saw a movie in that theatre. The movie was on the invention of aeroplanes by the Wright Brothers I would also like to see that movie. The best part is the dinosaur park and the boating

I am sure I would enjoy all these things with my friends There is a souvenir shop from which my cousins bought key chains for me. I would also like to buy souvenirs for my friends There is a restaurant where Indian and Chinese cuisine is available. This Science City is very big. It is spread over acres of land.

There are many streets in my home town Here I would like to talk about a street which is in the city centre It is called Bansan Wala Bazaar Street It is a very busy street This is basically a commercial street There are huge showrooms on both sides of the street Because of this street my hometown is known as a shopper’s paradise This street is very popular with NRIs There are many readymade garment stores such as Frontier cloth house and Kultham

garments Kultham shoes is also very popular store of my home town In these stores you can get all the branded clothes and shoes I like this street because I love to see the latest fashion displays which these stores show

through their mannequins Most of these stores are very costly but I get ideas about the latest trends from these stores I generally do window shopping there but when my relatives come from Canada, they buy

a lot of things from there. There is also a cosmetic shop by the name of Ozzie which has all the popular cosmetic

brands like Lakme, Revlon, Loreal and so on. There is a fast food restaurant on this street called Mohan Fast Foods which is very

popular among the people. I go to that fast food restaurant once or twice with my friends. We enjoy a lot there. At the end of the street there is a Gurudwara, or Sikh temple where I go very often to pay

obeisance to the almighty This street is always brimming with people and full of hustle and bustle. The only drawback of the street is that there is not enough parking space over there.

Stories play an important role in the development of a child. They help the child imagine the characters in the mind which is the first step to creativity. Another important benefit is that we can impart the knowledge of culture, tradition, moral values and religion in the mind of the child. This forms the basis of the child’s personality. Finally, telling stories enhances the curiosity of the child and enhances their mental growth.

2. What are the benefits of grandparents telling stories to children in the family?There are many benefits of grandparents telling stories to their grandchildren. This is one of the best ways to pass on our cultural heritage to our children. Another big advantage is that it reduces the loneliness of grandparents. They feel wanted and loved. They read animal stories.After 50 years – I do not think they will do any reading. All the time will be spent in front of computers.

4. Do you think children have lost their interest in stories?No, I don’t think that children have lost their interest in stories. However, the stories they read today are very different from the past.

5. Can story books be an ideal gift for children?Yes, definitely! Story books can be an ideal gift for children. 6. What can be done to encourage the habit of reading among children?A lot can be done to encourage the habit of reading among children. The first and foremost step would be to make books available. There should be good libraries in the schools as well as in neighbourhoods. Story telling competitions could be organised. If children have to take part in these competitions, then naturally, they would be encouraged to read books. Finally, books could be made more interesting by adding graphics.

7. How does reading help a child?Reading helps to improve concentration. It also helps to improve general knowledge. It also improves the language skills and satisfies the curiosity of children on various things.

8. What sort of books can be suggested to children to read?Children should be encouraged to read religious and historical books. They should also read biographies and autobiographies of famous people so that they get motivation from them. They should also be encouraged to read books on science and technology. However, these books should be made very interesting by adding pictures.

9. How much should a child read every day?A child should read half to one hour daily. I think that would be enough considering that they have to go to school and do their homework as well.

1. 1. Do old people in your country have a comfortable life after retirement?Those people who have planned their retirement during their earning years have a comfortable life after retirement. But, unfortunately, there are many who cannot save for their retired life. They face many problems such as health problems and financial problems. The small amount of pension they draw is not enough and their children generally do not look after them. They also suffer from isolation as their children and grandchildren do not like to spend time with them.

2. Do teenagers and adults enjoy the same kind of songs? It depends on the personal taste. Generally speaking, teenagers like songs with fast beats and adults like songs with good lyrics and soft music.

3. What are the factors which make people like a song?A song should have good lyrics, a good composition, a pleasing voice and a good video to be liked by people.

4. On which occasions do people in your country sing together?In my country, people sing together on birthday parties, marriages, anniversaries and national holidays like the Independence Day and so on.

5. Which kinds of songs are suitable for children? Why?I think folk songs are very suitable for children because they keep children connected to our culture and tradition. As it is, today’s children are following the global culture and so, they need to be kept in touch with our traditional culture. Folk songs are a good way to connect with our culture.

6. Do you think that it is important to learn about the oceans and why?I think it is very important to learn about the oceans. We are directly or indirectly influenced by the oceans. Ocean waters serve as a source of food and valuable minerals such as salt which we use daily in our food. Oceans also are used for commerce. For example, pearls taken from oysters are used in jewelry, and shells and coral are used as building materials. They also provide a place for recreation. Each year more people are attracted to the sports of swimming, fishing, scuba diving, boating, and waterskiing.

11. Do you think it is important to be alone sometimes?It is very important to be alone sometimes. Everyone needs to introspect at times. One needs to know about ones likes and dislikes and everyone needs time for one’s personal work which can be best done in solitude.

12. What is the importance of belonging to a certain group?There is a lot of importance of belonging to a social group. Man is a social animal and cannot live alone for long. One needs to share one’s happiness and sorrows with others. That is why we join social groups and feel part of these groups. Social groups are a sort of support system. They give us support when we are low in life. It is mentally unhealthy to be alone for long.

13. What are problem you could have if you go out together in big group?There could be a lot of problems in a big group. It is difficult to organise a big group. Mismanagement can lead to conflicts. IELTS speaking - Shopping questions with possible answers

1. Is it common in your country to buy and send a gift to your friends using the Internet? Why?It is not common in my country to buy and send a gift using the internet because most people in my country still do not have an internet connection. Moreover, most people still do not have a credit card. A credit card is needed to do shopping on the net. The situation may be different in metropolitan cities like Mumbai and Delhi.

2. Is it easy to buy a present for somebody? Why?Is it hard for you to choose gifts for others?No, it is not easy to buy a present for somebody because different people have different tastes. Moreover, the markets today are flooded with choices and it becomes very difficult to select things. The situation is very different if you know the person whom you are buying a gift for, very well.

3. What is better as a present, to give money or to buy something? - Why?It is better to give money as a gift because then the person could buy anything that he really needs. The gift you buy may not be useful for him at all.

4. Was your gift expensive?Yes, my gift was very expensive. It was a pearl necklace. It cost me Rs.6000/-. But the person I bought it for is also very special to me.

5. Is it important to you that your gifts are expensive?It is not important for me that my gifts are expensive. Gifts are gestures of love. I believe that an inexpensive item given with love is better than an expensive item gifted without love.

Follow up of celebrations

1. How do you learn about celebrations that are related to your culture?We learn about celebrations from our parents and grandparents. We also learn about them by attending family functions. We also learn through media by watching daily soaps. We also learn through school and college functions.

2. What do you think are common celebrations all over the world?There are many celebrations which are celebrated all over the world. Such as – New year celebration, Christmas celebration, Valentine Day celebration, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and so on.

3. Do you think we should follow our culture and traditions and why?Yes, definitely, we should follow our culture and tradition because it keeps us in touch with our roots. We can pass on our rich culture to our coming generation if only we know about it. I believe that every culture has some good points which need to be preserved.

4. How do you react to spending a lot of money on celebrations?I think it is sheer wastage of money. For example, burning crackers as a tradition on Diwali is OK but spending exorbitant amount of money on crackers is bad. For children these days, do you think it is easier to make friends in a smaller school or a larger school?I think it is easier to make friends in a small school because there are less number of students and you can easily interact with them and find someone your type. ORI think it is easier to make friends in a big school because there are many students and you can easily interact with them and find someone your type. ORI think size of the school does not matter in ability to make friends.

2. In your opinion, what are the benefits of studying in a larger school?There are many benefits of studying in a larger school. In a larger school you have many facilities like larger playgrounds and better labs and libraries. There are also better extra-curricular activities.

3. Do you think social education is important in schools? What are the advantages?I think social education is very important in schools. As it is, children today are being cut off from society and community because they have burden of studies and even their recreational activities are done alone. Their parents also don’t have time to give them any social education. In nuclear families no one is there to teach them such values. So, I think schools should take the onus of imparting social education.

4. How do you think schools can help pupils in developing their social skills?Schools can help in many ways. First of all teachers can act as role models and teach children basic manners and ethics. Then, schools can have compulsory community service as part of high school curriculum. There can be extra-curricular activities which impart social values.

There are many differences in moving from a bigger to a smaller school. On the one hand, the student may find he has come to a smaller place with lesser facilities such as playgrounds and labs. But on the other hand he may get personal attention as there are lesser number of students in a small school.

6. What qualifications should a teacher have?A teacher should have the qualifications needed for the subject he has to teach. For example, a science teacher should be a graduate in science subjects. Apart from that a B.Ed. degree is mandatory for all teachers in my country.

7. Why teachers give so many assignments to pupils?Teachers give assignments to students so that they learn by doing things. In this way it creates interest in the subject also. Students also develop their writing skills. They learn how to gather material for the assignment. It also helps in internal assessment of students.

8. What are the qualities necessary to become a good teacher?A good teacher should have many qualities. He should have good communication skills. If a teacher doesn’t have good communication skills, how will he teach. Secondly, a good teacher should have depth of knowledge. Because, if a teacher doesn’t have depth of knowledge, what will he teach. Then, a teacher should be impartial and should not favour any student. A teacher should be able to come down to the level of the student and teach him accordingly. A teacher should know where to be strict and where to be lenient.

He is blessed with two sons and runs a shoe store in the main market with them. He took active part in the freedom fight of India in 1947. It was built in the 1960s and had large airy classrooms and, next to it, some excellent playing fields.When you went into the building, there was a huge hall on the left where we had our daily gym class and morning assembly. On the right was the principal’s room next to the reception. In front of the principal’s room was the staff room.The classrooms were off two large corridors. Each classroom was identical. The teacher sat behind a large desk at the front of the class. Behind her was the blackboard. My last day at school was a very memorable one. I remember vividly the date also. It was the 6th of February. Our juniors had organised a farewell party for us. We all were very excited about that day. In fact most of us had bought new clothes for that day. Our principal and all teachers were also invited. Our juniors had many surprises for us up their sleeve. They had many awards for us also. We all were all asked to perform on the stage. It could be a mono-acting or a joke or a song. Everyone was doing rather well. When my turn came I became very nervous. It was stage fright. I had never performed on stage before. My legs were shaking. As I went up the stage I tripped and fell face down on the stage. Everyone burst into peals of laughter. It was the most embarrassing moment for me. I too started laughing. Firstly, ads tell us about new products. Ads also tell us how these products work. If there were no electronic and print advertising many new products would not be bought. So, in this way ads help the manufacturers and consumers both. Secondly, ads also educate people about non-commercial issues like AIDS, deforestation and family planning. Advertising is a powerful medium and can reach out to the remote corners of the country. Finally, the advertising industry provides jobs to thousands of people. On the other hand, there are some disadvantages also. Some people, especially kids can be easily attracted by the false claims made by the ads companies. Suddenly, from somewhere a scotter came at such a fast speed and before we could realize it hit my uncle and he fell down. The scooter too skid and fell about 20 feet away. There were three boys who were coming from some party. They were all under effect of alcohol. They all suffered injuries but my uncle was the worst hit. He suffered a fracture of femur (bone of thigh) and had to be operated. It took him 6 months to great back to normal. All just because of the negligence and irresponsible driving of 3 stupid boys. They ran away. If I ever get hold of them I`ll fix them surely.103. Why road accidents increase?Road accidents increase because of a variety of reasons. I have watched many interesting news stories on TVA news story that I saw recently was on Global warming. I saw it on Star news Channel. It caught my attention because global warming is a burning issue these days. The whole globe is involved in it. The way they showed the causes and effects was very eye catching. It was an eye-opener for me. We humans are the cause and we humans only can lessen it. The news article told how the pollution caused by cutting trees, having more industries, growing number of cars and other human luxuries is leading to global warming. Then it told me about effects of global warming. There are three main effects. Firstly there is rising sea level. Secondly we are having longer summers and extreme climates. That is to say that the summers are hotter and the winters are cooler. Finally we are having epidemics of diseases like malaria and dengue. This is because mosquitoes and other insects prosper in the heat. The news article also told how we can lessen this phenomenon by simple measures like not cutting down trees, planting more trees, using recycled materials and saying no to plastic bags.I felt very enlightened after seeing this news story. I decided to start using recycled things immediately.113. The one thing that you cannot change about yourselfThe one thing I cannot change about myself is my habit of procrastination. Favourite festival of my hometownBasant Panchami, the Festival of Spring, is celebrated mainly in Haryana and Punjab, during February-March. It is celebrated at the end of winter to welcome spring. During this season the mustard fields are in full bloom, giving the impression of yellow carpets. People welcome this change of season by wearing yellow clothes, flying kites and having fun.Kite flying is the major and most colourful event of this festival. The sky is covered with different colourful fighter kites. The kites are of medium size normally from 1 feet to 4 feet across and made of paper on a frame of bamboo strips. Preparation for this festival start many days earlier and people spend a lot of money on the kites. New clothes are purchased for this festival and many delicious dishes prepared for this particular occasion.
