Governor’s Volunteer Stars Awards 2020

The Governor’s Volunteer Stars Awards is an annual event that honors the efforts of volunteer from across Tennessee with the mission of encouraging volunteerism and community service. Each year one adult and one youth are selected to receive this prestigious award in recognition of their exemplary volunteer service in the county. In an effort to adhere to state guidelines, this year’s awards will be held virtually by the Governor’s Volunteer Stars Awards organization. The Fayetteville-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Bureau serves as County Coordinator for the program. A selection committee reviews applications submitted for Lincoln County nominees.

The adult recipient for 2020 representing Lincoln County is Melanie Kelso. Melanie teaches Pre-K at Lincoln Central Academy where her passion is literacy in education. She is involved with Lincoln County Little Free Libraries, Imagination Library and Literacy Night at Highland Rim School. She has earned numerous awards including Horace Mann’s Excellence in Teaching, and was named a Scholastic Red Apple Teacher; a title given to teachers by Scholastic Books for promoting early reading skills and a love for reading. Melanie is also Involved in and volunteers for various organizations and activities throughout the community

Lincoln County’s Youth recipient is Harold Canada. Harold is a recent Home School Graduate and is a very active volunteer in Lincoln County. Highlighted in his application were service hours devoted to helping with community organizations and festivals. For his efforts Harold was also recognized as having the most volunteer points on the FLC Chamber & Tourism Bureau’s Student Advisory Board and was awarded a scholarship for these efforts. He also spent a considerable amount of time working as a volunteer in the office of the Lincoln County Mayor Bill Newman. From June through January he worked approximately four hundred hours in the office.
