Abstract The present research paper deals with the moths collected from Topchanchi Wildlife Sanctuary,

Jharkhand. The information is based on the moth surveys done from September 05-06, 2016 and October

09-10, 2016. Identification yielded a total of 74 species under 66 genera of 15 different families of moths.

Family Erebidae is found to be dominating. Seven species are reported for the first time from Gangetic

plains whereas, all the included species are the new records for the sanctuary as the Topchanchi WLS

was surveyed for the first time for the diversity of moths. A new population variant of adult male of

Lymantria semisincta (Walker) has been reported for the first time

Introduction

Topchanchi Wildlife Sanctuary (TWLS) is situated in Dhanbad district of Jharkhand with an

area of 8.75 Km2. It is located on NH 2 between Dumri and Govindpur. Topchanchi Wildlife

sanctuary is the extension of Parasnath hills located in Giridih district. The sanctuary area is

full of small hills and undulating land. Topchanchi Wildlife Sanctuary has Dry mixed

deciduous type with Dry Peninsular Sal in Baneshpur and Bawardaha, the other tree species

are Asan, Bijasal, Dhow, Semal, Kendu, Piar, Karam, Siris, Sidha etc. The grassland and

bamboo crops are also present. In the centre of TWLS there is a beautiful lake under the

jurisdiction of Mineral area development authority, and it supplies drinking water to some

areas of Dhanbad district [1, 2]. The Topchanchi Lake adds to the richness of the habitat and is

visited by the migratory winter birds too. There is no published data on the invertebrate

diversity in general and Lepidoptera or moths of TWL in particular. However, the Mammalian

fauna of the sanctuary consists of Leopard, Jungle Cat, Cheetal, Barking Deer, Wild Boar,

Mongoose, Langur, Jackal, Fox, Wild Dog, etc. [1, 2].

Under a departmental programme on the study of the moth fauna of Jharkhand, a team of

Zoological Survey of India, Gangetic Plains Regional Centre, Patna with the first author as a

leader of the party surveyed the sanctuary for the first time in September & October, 2016. The

survey tours yielded a total of 74 species under 66 genera of 15 different families of moths.

Material & Methods

Collection: Two collection surveys were conducted from

September 05-06, 2016 and October 09-10, 2016. The sites

selected for collection was the watching tower along the bank

of lake, and ‘Bandh’ of lake (very near to watching tower)

(2305511 N; 8601150 E). The collection of moths was made

with the help of vertical sheet light trap during night time

(Fig. 2). The light trap was put on the watching tower

alongside the Topchanchi dam and on the Dam itself.

Processing & Preservation: The collected specimens were

killed with the help of ethyl acetate vapors and processed as

per standard techniques in Lepidopterology. Dry preservation

is done in fumigated entomological boxes and stored in the

insect cabinets in the Zoological Survey of India, GPRC,

Patna.

Identification: The identification was done with the help of

relevant literature [3-6]. The classification followed here is

given by Nieukerken et al. [7] and Zahiri et al. [8]

Systematic account: In the systematic account, name of the

family, subfamily, genus and species is given. For all the

included genera, the first reference is provided whereas, for

each of the included species: first reference, material

examined, and photograph of adults is provided.

Results and Discussion In the present study, an effort has been made to prepare an

Inventory of moths from Topchanchi Wildlife Sanctuary

(TWLS). The present paper deals with the preliminary data

collected during the two survey tours conducted in TWLS. A

total number of 108 examples of adult moths were collected

and identified in 74 species under 66 genera belonging to 15

different families. Maximum diversity of species within the

sanctuary is of family Erebidae which accounts for about 52%

of the total species collected. Seven species, Striglina

scitaraia, Tridrepana albonotata, Callyna monoleuca,

Lyncestis amphix, Polydesma boarmoides, Hulodes caranea

and Hexafrenum sp. represents the first record from

Jharkhand state as well as from the Gangetic Plains. A new

population variant of adult male of Lymantria semisincta

(Walker) has been reported for the first time which was

confirmed after studying its genitals. For the collection of

moths, selection of watching tower and Dam was done to

study the effect, if any, of height and direction. However, no

conclusion could be made. The present study will provide a

baseline data of moths of Topchanchi WLS, which can be

used in planning the conservation strategies and management

plans for the Topchanchi Wildlife Sanctuary. More surveys

are needed in the area so that a complete moth fauna from

TWLS can be compiled.
