ABOUT OUR SCHOOL Located in Greenville Suburban Community 2nd Largest Middle School
in District in 2012 Satellite School for students with
Orthopedic, Hearing and Visual Disabilities
Magnet School for International Studies Majority of students zoned by residence Uniform Dress Code for students
SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT COUNCIL In response to the massive budget cuts felt
across the state and overall economic downturn, our SIC became increasingly interested in the economy’s effect on class size and elective opportunities in our school
Greater concern was expressed by the willingness of legislators to support issues such as private school vouchers and increased State Charter School funding despite the tight budget
SIC ACTIVITIES FOR 2011-2012
To assist in providing a way for our community to have the opportunity to question the direction of funding for public schools and to express their concerns to those in office, two partnerships were created with other School Improvement Councils in our district.
PARTNERSHIPS Town Hall-type meeting at Beck
Academy Two House members to speak Parent moderator Two main elementary feeders and primary
high school invited to participate in and promote event
Organized a political debate for Republican Primary Senate race held at Mauldin Middle Partnered with numerous SICs throughout
district
RESULTS… Representative Henderson publicly
supported fully funding EFA soon after the town hall meeting
Incumbent Senator was defeated with a pro-public education candidate winning primary and election
Our SIC now partners with other SICs on a regular basis
THANK YOU AND ENCOURAGEMENT Thank you for the time and recognition I encourage you to seek out partnerships
with other schools and districts. We must reach out and unite to seek the best
opportunities for our children of not just our school, but of our state.
