Kozhikode, the Fort Palace, has now reclaimed its ancient name having been

known as Calicut for many years. Due to its abundance of spices, especially

pepper, It has been a vibrant trading port for hundreds of years attracting ships

from all over the world. The bazaar is still active in trade after 600 years. The

system of counting with fingers and toes is unique to this region. The hill stations

are still abundant in coffee and tea production.

The first church, mosque and synagogue in India were built here. The multi

cultural communities in Kerala have strong representations of Hindus, Muslims

and Christians who for the most part have co-existed in harmony. The Chinese

and Jews have also left their cultural influence. The Kozhikode beach has been

witness to many battles between European invaders. The kingdom once had

10,000 guards to ward off invaders.

Often referred to as “God's own country,” nowadays, when one thinks of Kerala,

it is generally beaches, swaying coconut trees, verdant green paddy fields,

decorated elephants and peaceful backwaters that come to mind, as well as well

as its ancient dance forms, music and ayurvedic medicine and spas. Throughout

Kerala, festivals are vibrant and inclusive of all the communities living here.
