Where has the year gone? This is a question many of you have been asking in the last few weeks! It does seem like only yesterday that we started the 2018 school year. If you take a moment to reflect on the year there has been a great deal of learning completed in classrooms (I am sure you viewed samples of that during Open Night) and children have been involved in a wide range of activities within the school and out in the community. We have also had the official opening of the new stage and science laboratory. Both these projects have added to the leaning opportunities for children across the school. To all members of the school community thank-you for your continued support of student learning over the year. Your inputs have made our teaching and learning programs all the richer for children. Assembly Our Student Councillors, under Mrs Senn’s guidance, led last Thursday’s assembly due to Mrs Fielding’s absence. The Student Councillors put together a second item this term from Pinkfong’s You Tube series called Baby Cars. The staff were sitting back enjoying the performance without the knowledge that we were to join in the performance! After completing the song and dance the Student Councillors asked the staff to join in much to the amusement of the audience. Congratulations to the Students Councillors on your item and hosting the assembly. Congratulations to students who were awarded Merit Certificates at the last assembly acknowledging their ability to follow the SAILS behaviour framework particularly for achievement, effort and improvement - well done.

Interschool Athletics Congratulations to all students who represented the school in the Junior and Senior Athletics teams. Albany PS was the host school this year did a good job organising and running the carnival over the two days at North Road Athletics Oval. Parent support was outstanding. Our two teams did very well in competition with the Junior Team Runners-up in the Handicap Shield and the Senior Team third in the Outright Shield. Well done to everyone involved including teachers who trained the teams prior to the carnival or supported our team on the day. Thank you to our parent volunteers who helped to officiate or came along to cheer on the school team. The following student gained individual recognition: Year 4 Girl Champion Tiannah

Complete Sets of SAILS Wristbands The eight children above were awarded a certificate and a SAILS badge at last week’s assembly acknowledging that they have been awarded a complete set of 5 SAILS wristbands this term. That takes the total of 17 students who have complete sets of wristbands. Congratulations.

Year 6 Graduation Ceremony Parents of year 6 students are invited to attend the Year 6 Graduation Ceremony next Wednesday 12 December from 9:00 am in the Assembly Hall. The ceremony will be followed by a morning tea for adults and the year 6 classes will depart for an end of year excursion to the Albany Aquatic and Leisure Centre at 11:00am.

Semester 2 Reports Semester 2 Reports will be sent home with students on Wednesday 12 December. The reports offer a chance for parents to provide their child with positive feedback and decide on an area or areas to work on in the new school year. There should be no surprises in the reports. Should there be any errors (hopefully our editing removed any errors) please return them to the office for correction. If you have any specific concerns or need clarity about comments please contact the class teacher before the end of the school year.

Final Assembly Thursday 13 December All family and friends are invited to attend the final Assembly for the year, next Thursday from 8:50 am in the Assembly Hall, when class awards for academic, encouragement and endeavour will be presented. Mrs Fielding’s year 1/2 class will present their item during the assembly. This year’s Student Councillors will present badges to the 2019 Year 6 Student Councillors. We look forward to your attendance.

Students who may return Late in 2019 If you already know or circumstances change over the school holidays and your children are not able to start school in the first three weeks please contact the school office to let us know. At the end of the third week a student census is conducted and we are funded on the number of students who are attending school on the Friday. If we know ahead of time of any children who will be attending school and are late back we are permitted to count them. This is critical to ensure we gain our maximum funding.

Farewell to Staff Leaving At this stage we will be farewelling the following staff: Ms Chard, Mrs Trott, Mrs Simpson, Mrs Nunn, Ms van de Brugge and Mrs Farmer. Thank you for your won-derful efforts over the year. To our many relief staff thanks for your efforts over the year

Parents as Partners In closing, I would like to thank parents, carers and the broader school community for the support that you have given staff throughout the year to ensure students had rich educational experiences. The School Board and the P&C Association have worked tirelessly on behalf of parents to improve outcomes for all students. I would like to acknowledge the high levels of commitment and enthusiasm that staff apply to the learning programs to ensure students receive a quality education at Flinders Park Primary School.

Chess and Draughts

To provide children with other purposeful play, the school purchased large sets of Draughts and Chess. We used these on a recent wet day.

Farewell To students and families leaving the school we wish you well. I trust you will be taking many great memories and lots of learning from your time at Flinders Park Primary School. On behalf of all staff, to everyone have a wonderful holiday break - enjoy the break, keep safe and we look forward to continuing our learning journey with most of you in 2019.

2018 Art curriculum linked with Science

4.1 in the Art Room

In Science students are studying Soils.

As a compliment to this study, students have used a copy of the globe to introduce the first element WATER and create oceans with watercolour effects.

Next, for EARTH, students used a mortar and pestle to grind Spongalite rock to a powder which they applied to the landmasses of their artwork.

The remainder of their work has been cocooned in intricate zentangle AIR element patterns, then dyed to give the impression of galaxies surrounding our planet.

The earth mandala has been embellished with coloured feathers to complete an awesome FIREY tribal artwork inspired by soil!
