An ICT system diagramA system is an assembly of parts that together make a whole. ICT systems are made up of some or all of

the parts shown in the diagram. Various devices are used for input, processing, output, and communication.

ICT systems can be made of some or all of the parts shown.

Input devices, processing and output devices

Input devices allow to enter raw data into a computer. The computer processes the data and then produces

outputs that we can understand by using an output device. Input devices can be manual or automatic.

The processing is mainly handled by the Central Processing Unit (CPU).

Manual input devicesThe most common manual input devices are keyboards and mouses. Let’s discover the other manual input devices ...

The teacher divides the students in 7 different teams called: (6 groups with 4 students and one with 5)

★ yellow team★ red team★ blue team★ green team★ purple team★ black team★ orange team

First step …..

Every team has to find and insert 3 images of their device.

Every team can get 3 points. The teacher will build the score board step by step.

Manual input devices

Concept keyboard

Each button has a functon. Buttons can

have text or picture.

Fast food restaurants often use concept

keyboards because with a single button you

can order an entire meal.

Manual input devices

Trackball

You can use instead of your mouse. The

user rotates the ball which moves the

pointer on the screen. Their use is very

easy, also for those presenting difficulties in

manual movements.

Joystick

If you play a videogame you have a Joystick

to control your game.

In building construction, joysticks control

machinery such as cranes.

Manual input devices

Digital camera

A digital camera takes pictures and can

usually record videos, too.

The pictures it takes and the videos it

records are stored in files.

These files can be copied into a computer

and then edited.

computing they can be used with voice

recognition software and a word processing

application to enter text. Webcams usually

have built-in microphones, too.

Video digitiserA video digitiser takes an image from a

video camera or television and digitises it

so that it can be read by, and stored on, a

computer. Video sequences captured using

a video digitiser are often used in

multimedia presentations.

ScannerA scanner can be used to digitise images.

They're similar to a photocopier but they

make a digital copy instead of a physical

copy. They can also be used with optical

character recognition (OCR) software to

scan in text that is then editable.

Graphics tabletA graphics tablet consists of a flat pad (the

tablet) on which the user draws with a

special pen. As the user draws on the pad

the image is created on the screen. Using a

graphics tablet, a designer can produce

very accurate on-screen drawings as if they

were drawn on paper.

Second step ….. let’s play!

If you think that new words or verbs need to be explained, please write them in the glossary prepared by the teacher. Remember to write every word in alphabetical order.

Make sure you’ve understood! You are going to change group to explain to the other classmates what your device is and how it works. Are you ready?

When the teacher asks you to change group, only one student will remain seated waiting for the new classmates. Everybody will go to a different group, so every group will have somebody able to explain each input device you’ve explored.

Everybody will talk about each input device at least 25 seconds and no more than 1 minute (you can use a mobile or your ipad to take the time). During the activities, the other members of the group decide how many points to give each student (from 0 to 3 points):- 0 if you don’t say a word- 1 if you can’t explain or the other ones can’t understand what you say- 2 if you can explain and the group understands the general meaning- 3 if you speak plain and the group understands everything very well

At the end of these activities, every “colour” tells the teacher the score obtained and you go back to your colour team..

Third step ….. once again changing devices: output device

Let ‘s start again!

Your team is all here and you are going to work on your slide (read the next slide then look for your color).

When the teacher asks you to move to another group, rembember you can’t be with the same group you were in the previous activity.

At the end of these new activities, every “colour” tells the teacher the new score.

Go back to your color team.

Input devices, processing and output devices

Automatic input devices let the data be entered without any human interventions.

Question: what are the differences between automatic and manual input devices? The difference is that a manual input device needs the human source of input ( the data are typed in or some special keys need to be pressed), while automated input devices are used in situations in which the data are already prepared, when the data are collected in a form, the input device can pick them up and transmit them directly into the computer.

SensorSensors are often used as part of a

feedback cycle. They collect data

continuously and are typically linked to a

control program that specifies acceptable

levels, eg the minimum and maximum

temperature in a green house, the right

temperature in your house depending on

the time, for your washing machine or your

fridge. The control program decides what to

do, relying on the data felt by the sensors.

Automatic input devices

Barcode readerBarcodes are represented by black vertical

bars and are read by a barcode reader.

Barcodes are printed on many products you

buy, each product has a unique code. When

read, information stored in the shop

database is recalled, such as the product

name and price. This information will

appear later on your receipt. The scanning

process also assists in stock management,

reducing the stock every time a product is

scanned/sold.

Find and insert 3 images, then delete this text. You need different picutres that can help your classmates to understand better and (very important) to remember.

Magnetic Ink Character Reader (MICR)Magnetic ink characters appear at the

bottom of cheques. Banks use MICR to read

the numbers from the bottom of cheques to

obtain data such as account numbers and

bank sort codes. A particular font is used,

that makes it easy for the machine to

discriminate between characters. The ink is

magnetised, this makes it immune to

creases and dirty marks.

systems are suited to reading pre-printed

forms and check boxes such as National
