We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospect. ~Anaïs Nin I NNER C IRCLE the AN EXCLUSIVE MONTHLY COMMUNIQUÉ FOR OUR WRITERS It’s fall and before we know it, little monsters and princesses will be ringing our doorbells and calling out “trick or treat.” In that vein, I’d love to share an excerpt from Lisa Mackinder’s wonderful story, “Trick or Treat,” which we published in Chicken Soup for the Soul: I Can’t Believe My Dog Did That! Here’s a little taste of the story: “Trick or treat!” A sea of cherubic-faced princesses, ghosts and goblins raised their jack-o’- lanterns in the hopes of obtaining candy. Marley sat to our right, wagging his tail incessantly… But that night, after the third or fourth Halloween salutation, Marley grew agitated. “What’s wrong with him?” I asked… “I know what the problem is,” said my husband. “What?” “Trick or treat,” he said. “I don’t understand,” I replied. My husband smiled and repeated the phrase, with emphasis on “treat.” Then it hit me. Marley connected the word with doggy biscuits. The entire evening he must have felt the victim of a cruel prank, hearing the word over and over and watching youngsters run off with booty. His booty. We don’t want your best friend to be disappointed this Halloween. So, if you e-mail the illustrious [email protected] with your name, dog’s name and mailing address, we’ll send you a free bag of our new Chicken Soup for the Soul dog treats while our sample supplies last. “Trick or treat!” A sea of cherubic-faced princesses, ghosts and goblins raised their jack-o’-

lanterns in the hopes of obtaining candy. Marley sat to our right, wagging his tail incessantly…

But that night, after the third or fourth Halloween salutation, Marley grew agitated.

“What’s wrong with him?” I asked… “I know what the problem is,” said my husband. “What?” “Trick or treat,” he said. “I don’t understand,” I replied. My husband smiled and repeated the phrase, with emphasis on “treat.” Then it hit me. Marley
