Pre-cut PrimerPre-cut packaging and naming varies among manufacturers. For example, Moda names their 2½"-wide strip package a Jelly Roll and Riley Blake calls them Rolie Polies. Each manufacturer decides how many pieces to include in each pack—40 pieces per pack is pretty standard but some companies put in more or less, depending on the number of fabrics a designer has in a collection.
Dear Friend,
Here at Fons & Porter, we love all things quilting, and are delighted
to share our love of quilting with you! As quilters, we rarely lack for
inspiration—we just lack time! Working with pre-cut strips and
squares is one way to make more quilts with less time. We’ve put this
Make Quilts With Pre-Cut Strips and Squares! booklet together for you
(including some of our favorite tips and techniques) so that you can
get a taste of working with pre-cuts. The illustrations, instructions
and tools we’ve shared in these pages will help you achieve success
with your projects. In every issue of Love of Quilting, you’ll get to

This package of approximately 40 (2½"-wide)
strips will make a lap or small twin-size quilt.
Available from a number of manufacturers under
a variety of names, the strips are great for making
striped triangles or any type of strippy project.

Layer Cakes are collections of 10" × 10"
squares of fabric—similar to a charm pack but
a larger size. Originally packaged and named
by Moda Fabrics, Layer Cakes are available by
collection and typically include 42 pieces of
fabric, though the number may vary.
chArM pAck™
A charm pack contains 5" charm
squares, often containing a small “taste"
of each design in a collection. Usually
consisting of about 40 pieces, 1 charm
pack will make a baby quilt, 2 charm
packs a crib-size quilt, 3 charm packs a
lap quilt, and 4–5 charm packs contain
enough for a twin-size quilt.

Quick Triangle-SquaresTry our quick and easy methods to make Triangle-Squares and Hourglass Units without cutting triangles. The Fons & Porter Quarter Inch Seam Marker helps
you draw accurate stitching lines.
QUIck TrIangle-SQUareS
1. From 1 light and 1 dark fabric,
cut 1 square ⅞" larger than the
desired finished size of triangle-
square. For example, to make a
triangle-square that will finish
4⅛", cut 5" squares.
2. Place Quarter Inch Seam Marker
diagonally across wrong side of
light square, with yellow center
line positioned exactly at corners.
Mark stitching guidelines along
both sides of Quarter Inch Seam
Marker (Photo A).
NOTE: If you are not using the
Fons & Porter Quarter Inch Seam
Marker, draw a diagonal line from
corner to corner across square.
Then draw sewing lines on each
side of the first line, ¼" away.
3. Place light square atop dark
square, right sides facing; stitch
along marked sewing lines.
4. Cut between rows of stitching to
make two triangle-squares (Photo B).
Press seams toward darker fabric.
