Dear FrienDs,Thirty years ago, a group of volunteers enlisted friends and borrowed cars to transport excess food from local restaurants in New York City to programs feeding the hungry. That simple action—based on the practical idea that individuals can fight hunger by moving excess food to where it is most needed in their community—has inspired over 200,000 donors and volunteers to support City Harvest since our founding.
Union Square Hospitality Group believed from its very beginning that no one should go hungry in a city like New York. For over 20 years, City Harvest’s white and green trucks have been a familiar sight at their restaurants, picking up excess food for delivery to soup kitchens and food pantries. Union Square Hospitality Group staff and chefs have worked tirelessly to help raise awareness about hunger—becoming a powerful force not only in the restaurant industry, but in charity at the local level.
In our first decade, when Union Square Hospitality Group first partnered with City Harvest, we reached an important milestone, rescuing and delivering over five million pounds in a single year. In our 30th year, with their support, City Harvest will provide more food than we rescued in total during our first decade—some 38 million pounds. A new food rescue facility in Queens and programs that take a comprehensive approach to tackling hunger at the community level now put City Harvest in a position to do even more for hungry New Yorkers in coming years.
The moment someone decides to join the fight against hunger—that’s “practical magic” at work. It made City Harvest possible 30 years ago, and keeps us going now. By joining us this evening, you help honor one of our oldest and most dedicated partners. You also help ensure City Harvest can rise to the challenge of feeding our city. Please enjoy this evening with our gratitude.
Warmest thanks,
Jilly Stephens Executive Director

Black Forum of Co-op City
P.O. Box 563 Bronx, N.Y. 10475 (718) 320-8035
Dear Chef Keltus:
Since our humble beginnings back in 1999, the Black Forum of Co-op City, located in
Room 20 of the Dreiser Community Center, Bronx, N.Y. 10475, has been the recipient
of food from City Harvest. Initially, we were supplied by the Emergency Food Assistance
Program (EFAP) and served approximately 300 people per month. As time progressed, it
became almost impossible to keep up with the growing demand. We were then introduced
to City Harvest through another program.
From our very first encounter, we were impressed with City Harvest and the hard working
and dedicated people we met there, especially Chef Keltus Campo, who immediately went
to bat for us, placing the Black Forum of Co-op City on the City Harvest route. Our program
blossomed and soon we were serving 500 people a month, thanks to the generosity of
City Harvest. Today, we serve a record 1,300 people a month and we are still growing.
Through Chef Keltus’ help, we not only provide bags of staple food items to the communi-
ty, but we were also able to introduce the community to fresh fruits and vegetables, which
was an instantaneous hit, and resulted in even more people utilizing our services. In
addition, we have been able to offer workshops and seminars on the proper handling and
preparation of food and to promote healthy eating and exercise programs for our clients—
all of which are very well attended.
Chef Keltus has also been instrumental through the years in helping us to maximize our
efficiency by offering trouble shooting tips and aiding us in streamlining our operation.
We have learned how to gauge our clientele, we’ve attended networking sessions and
been introduced to marketing strategies to further promote our program, all of which have
resulted in a valuable program that serves the needs of the clientele we serve.
The Black Forum of Co-op City is grateful to the assistance that City Harvest has been
providing to us through the years, and looks forward to many more years of this outstand-
ing commitment.
Sincerely,
Tony Illis
President

Now serving New York City for 30 years, City Harvest (www.cityharvest.org) is the world’s first food rescue organization, dedicated to feeding the city’s hungry men, women, and children. This year, City Harvest will collect more than 33 million pounds of excess food from all segments of the food industry, including restaurants, grocers, corporate cafeterias, manufacturers, and farms. This food is then delivered free of charge to some 600 community food programs throughout New York City by a fleet of trucks and bikes. City Harvest helps feed the more than one million New Yorkers that face hunger each year.
