Helios is a small blue-chip consultancy focusing on the aviation sector. We work in areas such as airport operations, air traffic management and space.
Our team of 50 consultants works closely with customers and we aim to be their first choice for high quality consultancy. Our influence is often at board level and can have a major impact on our customers’ performance.
Our consultancy tasks are very broad covering strategy, policy, performance improvement, economics, operational analysis, safety and regulation.
We joined Egis, an international engineering and infrastructure group, in 2013.
With a head office in Farnborough (a short train ride from London) and offices in Dubai and Slovakia, we work extensively throughout Europe and around the world. Recently we have been working in these countries, amongst others: UK, Ireland, Switzerland, Norway, UAE, Singapore, Belgium, Sweden, Croatia, Czech Republic, The Netherlands, Romania, India, Turkey and Morocco.

A new runway at HeathrowWe assessed a proposal to build a third runway at Heathrow. This work was done as an input to the Commission that the government established to investigate options for additional airport capacity in the UK. Our work included building a fast-time simulation of the airport with the new runway, which allowed a sophisticated visualisation of the new operations.
Strategy support to Dubai airportOur work in Dubai has included providing the airport with risk and business continuity planning, including planning for a three-month runway closure. We also provide operational analysis of the airport operation and help it implement the best practices from other airports around the world.
Advising on European aviation policy For over a decade we have advised the European Commission on new policies in aviation and specifically in air traffic control. We run a group called the Industry Consultation Body, which is where European Industry meets to give comment on proposals for new European laws in this area.
Wha
t we
do Helios has experience in working with a variety of well-respected organisations. Our team has a range of expertise covering research, planning, strategy, management, simulations, feasibility and safety studies.
Here are some examples of the sort of work we do.
Economic support to the European Investment Bank We are advising the EIB on a loan to Italy for a major investment in the country’s air traffic control infrastructure. We are undertaking investment appraisal and economic analyses to ensure the security of the loan.
Norwegian safety supportWe advise the Norwegian airport and air traffic control operator on the safety of new operations and technologies. To do this we must assess any proposed changes and build a “safety case” by working closely with the client in Oslo.
Improving the safety of aviation in IndiaSince 2010 we have assisted the Indian government to develop and implement a “State Safety Programme”. We are working with many airports and airlines to improve safety, and are having a direct influence on the safety of that fast-growing region.
Who
are

look

for? We recruit new consultants with both graduate and
post-graduate degrees as well as those already with consultancy experience. We are flexible about academic backgrounds – our graduates join with degrees as diverse as physics, maths, chemistry, psychology, natural sciences, economics or engineering (all branches, for example electrical, manufacturing, aeronautical or civil engineering).
You will have an excellent academic record but will also be able to show a high level of analytical capability, creativity in problem solving, as well as outstanding communications skills, both verbal and written.
A rewarding careerConsultancy is an interesting and varied career that will ensure you never get bored. Our aim is to support you to reach your maximum potential in it as soon as possible.
The way we workWe work in small, integrated and multi-skilled teams established on a project basis, under the guidance of our senior staff. We work in partnership with our clients and partners, either in our offices or on client premises. You’ll make a major contribution and have a
client facing role from day one and would expect soon to be leading and delivering projects. Over time, we’ll expect you to develop deep market knowledge and entrepreneurial flair to win new business. You’ll expect to travel widely, particularly within Europe.
DevelopmentWhether you are a recent graduate or an experienced recruit, we’ll give you the support and encouragement you need to develop and further your consultancy career as rapidly as possible. We have a tailored development programme to provide the opportunity for staff to enhance their functional, commercial and management expertise and progress their careers. Our development tools include a staff coaching and mentoring programme, in-house and on-the-job training, assistance with professional qualifications and, on a case-by-case basis, supporting staff in further learning programmes such as MBAs.

I joined Helios straight from Durham
University. I was looking for a career where
I could use my technical and analytical
skills but in a vibrant and varied sector.
I chose Helios because it offered the
chance to do just this. Being a small
company, everyone is friendly and willing to
help support each other on projects – right
up to the Managing Director and Chairman.
At my interview I learnt more about the
sectors that Helios works in and was sold on
the company when I heard that the projects
are of real value to clients; this was a
business I wanted to be a part of!
As a graduate you are expected to pitch
in on projects right from your first day and
to take on responsibility to deliver specific
tasks within a project at a reasonably
early stage in your career. This enables
you to gain direct experience balancing
customer requirements against a budget and
timescale.
Since joining, I have worked on a
number of projects, often at the edge
of European air traffic management
developments. Most notably, during my first
year I was lucky enough to travel to Brussels
at least once a month to work closely with
the ATM industry to provide technical advice
to the European Commission on policy. I
relocated to Romania during my second year
to provide full time on-site support on the
implementation of this policy to two clients
– it has been an incredible experience,
especially at this stage of my career, and
delivers great job satisfaction.

I first joined Helios as an intern in the
summer of 2012 after graduating from
Cambridge. I was interested in the varied
work that comes with being a consultant
but also wanted a small company as I felt
this would give me greater responsibility
and make for a better working environment.
I then joined as a full time graduate
after a year studying at the Sorbonne in
Paris. Since then I have been involved in
a range of interesting projects, acquiring
new skills and expertise as well as using the
knowledge gained during my studies.
I am really enjoying the variety of work
I am involved in, for example a strategy
project for the European Investment
Bank and a financial benchmarking of air
navigation services for an international
trade body. That project involved a three-
day trip to Dubai (where Helios has an
office) as a central meeting place for
participants from all over the world.
Reflecting back on my first year I found
it both exciting and challenging. With
support from more senior colleagues I am
now managing my first projects and have
been consistently impressed by the level of
client exposure and responsibility given to
junior staff.

I joined Helios as an analyst having
graduated from Loughborough University.
I wanted a job that would give me the
opportunity to travel, get real client exposure
and the ability to make my own mark.
I have found this at Helios. The learning
curve is fast and you are at times thrown in
at the deep end, but this was something I
actually really enjoy. You are given support
from project directors and project managers,
but you are also expected to be autonomous
in the way you work, constantly learning on
the job.
Within a month of joining the company
I was sent on my first business trip and
I haven’t stopped travelling since. I am
currently working full time in Oslo, providing
support to the Norwegian operator of
airports and Air Traffic Control. The project
involves process improvement within the
Systems Operations department, with me
reporting directly to the senior management
team. Being the only Helios representative
on-site can be quite a pressured position
when things sometimes don’t quite go
to plan, but I have found the experience
invaluable.
At Helios you are given the opportunity
to project manage very early on in
your career and in parallel, there are
opportunities for promotion. The company
will try to support you in developing areas
of expertise that are both interesting and
suited to you.

I joined Helios after a few years in academic
research. I was looking for a new challenge
and found in Helios the perfect opportunity,
not only because I am working for the
aviation sector at the cutting edge of
innovation, but also because I can grow and
learn as part of a supportive team.
From the start I was involved in a
variety of projects, enabling me to use my
technical research background as well as
develop new skills and knowledge in business
and strategy. Whilst I was encouraged
to take ownership of my work from the
start and given responsibility early on, the
projects at Helios are very much based on
working within a team and close partnership
with clients. I really enjoy working with
people from very different fields, ranging
from industry to policy makers and working
out solutions for their problems.
I was part of the team that was
developing a strategy and business plan
for an air navigation service provider in a
fast growing and changing environment. I
am now working on developing a roadmap
for the implementation of new technology,
which involves close collaboration with a
variety of companies across Europe.
In this past year my work has taken
me to Belgium, Italy, the Czech Republic,
Croatia, Dubai, Turkey, France and Denmark.
Although I love travelling and find this
part of my work very exciting, I also really
enjoy working in the office in Farnborough,
where the atmosphere is very friendly and
colleagues are always happy to give advice
and support.

RewardsOur work is rewarding and stimulating in itself, but we back this up with an excellent remuneration package, including not only an excellent basic salary with all of the usual additional benefits – for example non-contributory pension and private health insurance – but also a discretionary performance-related bonus.
Work-life balanceWe work hard but we understand the benefits to our staff, our clients and ourselves that a healthy work-life balance brings. We provide a professional, friendly and supportive working environment, supported by technology, to enable flexible working whether in the office, from home or on the move.
Travel the world Most of our clients are overseas and so you are likely to travel regularly with your work. We also look for applicants who would be happy to consider a longer term placement overseas at some point early in their career. We currently have staff in Dubai, Norway and Romania on six-month to two-year placements.
DiversityMost often the best solutions to problems reflect innovation arising naturally from a diverse range of thoughts and ideas. Underpinned by our equal opportunities philosophy, we are committed to supporting diversity, reflected in our multinational, multi-ethnic workforce (our staff speak nine different languages!). Our commitment is to recruit and retain the best qualified people irrespective of gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, marital status, age, disability or national origin.
Looking for an internship?Over the last 13 years Helios has welcomed interns to join
us during the summer months. Almost half of them have
accepted permanent positions with us. We have found that
interns benefit from the experience and exposure to a vibrant
consulting business, whilst Helios gets the chance to ‘test-
drive’ potential employees over a few months. Unlike some
companies, we do pay our interns – the amount is small and is
mainly intended to help cover expenses.
The intern formula has worked well for us, and every summer
we look for new interns to join us. We’re serious about wanting
people who genuinely think that consultancy might be a
career for them. We’re flexible about backgrounds – it’s more
important that candidates have bright, enquiring minds and are
numerate.
Get in touch if this sounds like you!
If you like the sound of a career with Helios, then we’d love to hear from you.
