Introduction:Is your aquatics program underutilized and dominated with a “seniors or swim team only”mentality? With one critical move, you can encourage your members to rethink howworkouts are done in the pool and change the way your pool is utilized. Take a tip from thepros—professional sports teams and collegiate athletes are training with HydroWorx!Your YMCA or Fitness facility should too!

HydroWorx products present many opportunities to provide superior aquaticprogramming for your YMCA or Fitness club. By adding a HydroWorx X80 underwatertreadmill & jet machine to your facility’s pool, you are offering a pain-free environment formembers of all populations and all fitness levels.

Rethink how the pool in your facility is used. With an integrated jet for resistance and deeptissue massage, underwater video for gait analysis, underwater treadmill for gait training &balance enhancement and water depth adjustment to accommodate varying member’sheights; the X80 can be a great enhancement to your current aquatics programs. You’renot going to believe the intense workout you can achieve, or what the properties of waterthat can do for you.

How is it different than land?

While walking or running on the underwater treadmill, it’s virtually pain free. Yourreduced body weight eases the pressure on your joints so you can move freely.

The hydrostatic pressure of water naturally decreases inflammation and increasescirculation, never leaving you with muscle soreness after an intense workout.

Individuals burn more calories. The extra resistance of water provides up to 200 timesmore resistance than land. Add the X80 resistance jet to your workout to furtherincrease the intensity.

Workout hard without the fear of injury or even re-injury.

Our deep tissue massage allows you to ease sore muscles and manipulate scar tissueat the end of a long or intense workout.

The Science

Page 5: An Aquatic Toolkit for the YMCA & Health Club

The Science:There have been several research studiesconducted that have proven theeffectiveness of HydroWorx aquatictraining for exercise, weight loss andrehabilitation.

Doctors W. Matthews Silvers and DennisDolny conducted several conclusivehydrotherapy research experiments at theUniversity of Idaho. In the first study, it wasfound that HydroWorx products can createa metabolic and cardiovascularenvironment as stressful as traditionalland-based treadmills but with reducedjoint stress—a hallmark feature of aquatictherapy.

In follow-up studies, positive results werealso verified with factors such as maximaloxygen consumption, heart rate, ventilation, blood lactate, leg stride rate andlength, and perception of effort. Each studyconfirmed the effectiveness and equivalentresponses with aquatic fitness vs. land-based treadmills.

For weight loss, led by Dr. Stephen Crouse,a team of Texas A&M scientists conductedtwo important experiments comparingland-based treadmill exercise toHydroWorx exercise. The studies werecompleted with 32 overweight adults overa three month period. Each participant inthe study was over 40 years of age.

The study showed that:

HydroWorx pool exercise burns morecalories per minute than land treadmillexercise when walking or jogging at 4mph or above (jets at 50% or above).

Those subjects using the HydroWorxpool gained more lean muscle massthan those using the land treadmill (jetsat 50% or above).

Subjects lost a higher body fatpercentage using the HydroWorx poolthan they did using the land treadmill(jets at 50% or above).

4 out of 5 subjects preferred exercisingin the HydroWorx pool rather than onthe land treadmill.

The study results significantly proved thatthe overall health and fitness of theparticipants utilizing HydroWorx productswas improved without the joint trauma and“wear and tear” that one normallyexperiences working out on land.

In addition to obtaining the samecardiovascular benefits, burning morecalories and gaining leaner muscle mass onthe underwater treadmill, 4 out of 5research participants preferred exercisingon the HydroWorx than on a land treadmill!

"I've been in the fitness industry for over 30 years. This is the first piece of equipment

that I have ever seen elicit such passion among the membership. Men, women, every

age, and every fitness level just love these treadmills. Our biggest challenge is in not

being able to increase the number of hours in a day! We purchased three X80s initially

and in only three short months of operation are considering a fourth.

More men are using the pool than ever before. More non-swimmer/"land" athletes are

using the pool than ever before. Aquatic personal training and rehab has increased 58%

from this time last year. And we are currently entertaining several new medically based

partnerships." Kathy Fisher, Aquatics Director, Randolph YMCA

Financial ReturnIt’s easy to see the value in adding HydroWorx products to your YMCA or Health Club.Adding an amenity like this to your club is a great way to increase club memberships, increase personal training and rehab appointments, as well as, increased medicalpartnerships.

By integrating an X80 underwater treadmill & jet, you will be gaining a competitiveadvantage not utilized at other YMCAs or fitness clubs near you. A large percentage of thepopulation does not work out because it is painful or they are afraid of becoming injured.Once potential members hear you have a way to exercise in a pain free environmentwithout the fear of injury or the promise of muscle soreness the next day, they will belining up to try it!

When you consider that an X80 underwater treadmill can be leased for $399/ month, you can quickly see that if your average membership cost is $50/month, you would onlyneed to obtain and retain 8 new members (total!) to pay for this addition to your facility.

In addition to increasing memberships, other facilities have seen great participation andfinancial success by offering small group training or personal training boot camps on theX80 underwater treadmills. One-on-one or in a group setting, members typically love theworkout they get in the water but desire the attention and structure of a program.

At a YMCA, customers typically pay $40- 45/session for personal training or $10-15/person for a small group aquatic boot camp of 5 people. In a fitness club settingindividuals pay $75/ session for personal training and $20-25/session for small grouptraining. Through successful marketing to your members, the opportunities are limitless!

In addition to performance and weight loss, HydroWorx products are utilized worldwidefor rehabilitation and sports medicine. By renting your pool and X80 underwatertreadmills to physical therapy clinics in the area, you can obtain new medical partnershipsand simultaneously expose your facility to new members as they progress toward fitnessor wellness after their rehabilitation. Be sure to also build relationships with doctors inyour area to educate them on your new offerings for increased referral traffic to your door.
