Class room seminar was organized to give the information about statues of different personalities such as freedom fighter, social activist, saints etc.

Students came to know many new statues and even the personalities which were earlier unknown to them.

Students got a new experience to interact with people from different strata, while collecting the data.

13. SUMMARY OF THE FINDINGS :

It has been 64 years since independence and innumerable people sacrificed their lives to free India from the shackles of British colonialism. The Non-co-operation Movement, Civil Disobedience Movement, Quit India Movement led by Mahatma Gandhi attained success through the active mass participation. Women too played a significant role in the freedom struggle. The Indians were inspired to fight against colonialism by each and every sacrificial act of the revolutionary.

The Independence Movement was accompanied by social movement. Many social workers worked relentlessly to get rid of the then prevalent orthodox customs, traditions, and bindings.

The conservative orthodox people expressed objection and obstructed social change being brought about by social workers, but they worked with firmness and unwavering sprit to initiate a new social ideology.

Women education was started in Maharashtra by Mahatma Jotiba Phule and his wife Savitribai Phule. They also established an organization called “Bal Hatya Pratibandhak Griha” to discourage infanticide. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar worked to get rid of the discriminative caste-system prevalent in the society and brought about the upliftment of untouchables. Saints too made efforts to bring awareness about various superstitious, orthodox customs, traditions etc. such as Saint Gadge maharaj used the medium of “Kirtans” to do so.

Against all this the present day generation living in an independent nation is ignorant of all these aspects. They are unable to realize the value of independence and the cost of achieving it. This research work has been undertaken to inform the youngsters about most of the Freedom fighter, Social activist, Saints & Political personalities and their work. This will not only inspire them but also helps in creating a generation with social.

Nagpur city has been selected for this research work. The second capital of Maharashtra, Nagpur with a population of 24,05,421 has historical, political and social significance. Cultural aspects are also visible in this city. Many renowned individuals and their work are linked to this city, whose statues are visible in Nagpur. Why were these status established? Who did it? What is the basic purpose of it? Does it have any historical, social, religious, political significance? Does it affect the society and people in the vicinity of the society? We have tried to get the answers of these questions and enlighten the work of the personalities through this minor research work, titled “An Analytical Study of Some Selected Statues of

Nagpur City”. 50 statues have been selected for present research and placed it under different

categories based on their work such as political, social, freedom fighter, religious, saint and others.

Page 7: “An Analytical Study Of Some Selected Statues Of … Shivaji Maharaj, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Rajendra Prasad, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Swatantraveer Savarkar, Savitribai Phule,

During research it was found that certain statues from our selected fifty, shortlisted were known not only to Nagpurians but to one and all.

The selected statues are of Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Ambedkar, Lokmanya Tilak, Rani Laxmibai, Shivaji Maharaj, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Rajendra Prasad, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Swatantraveer Savarkar, Savitribai Phule, Jotiba Phule, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Dr. Hedgewar, Tukdoji Maharaj, Gadge Maharaj, Bajiprabhu Deshpande, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Kannamwar, etc.

The above mentioned personalities have made a valuable contribution to the country. They and their work will always be inspiration for the society. Apart from the national level personalities many local and regional personalities have worked for the country and society whose statues are also erected in the city. For example, Jamnalal Bajaj, Panjabrao Deshmukh, Annabhau Sathe, Senapati Bapat, Babu Awale, Dr. Munje, Dr. Abhyankar, Dr. Rajabhau Khobragade, Rambhau Ruikar, etc.

It was found during research that the statues of above mentioned regional personalities are establish at various places or crossroads (squares) and the people in the vicinity of these statues recognize them. But very few people from other localities or region know about them. It was also found that some of the above mentioned statues of regional personalities were erected/established by the people of his/her community in their locality. In the opinion of the people that personality represents their community. For example, Hemu Kalani who belong to Sindhi community is established in the locality habited by a large number of Sindhi population. Similar case is that of Rajabhau Khobragade and Babu Awale.

While carrying out the research and interviewing the people it was found that sometime the statues are defamed and insulted under the pretext of religious, political, criminal or road-widening reasons. This hurts the religious feeling of the people and leads to social unrest. In order to avoid such situations it is necessary for people to upheld liberal views. It is also necessary to bring about social integration and secularism among people. Social caste system must also be eliminated.

In order to keep these great personalities and their work in memory, the birth and death anniversaries are celebrated and observed respectively in schools and colleges. This will acquaint the new generation about their life and work. Besides this, Essay competition, quiz contest can be organized or field trip to the places where these statues are established can also be arranged. Newspapers must publish articles on these personalities from time to time.

This research work leads to the conclusion that great personalities of the nation, social workers, saints, etc. and their work should be inspirational and a guiding height for coming generations and erecting there statues does play a significance role in the same.

It is an effective tool for conserving the history makers. In the words of Dr. Abdul Kalam, “Even if the great personalities who created history go

behind the curtains of part their perspectives and works can be useful for future creator of history.”

Page 8: “An Analytical Study Of Some Selected Statues Of … Shivaji Maharaj, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Rajendra Prasad, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Swatantraveer Savarkar, Savitribai Phule,

14. CONTRIBUTION TO THE SOCIETY ( GIVE DETAILS ) :

Statues have been established in every other square of Nagpur city which has an area of 218 sq km with 2405421 population. This research work inculcates the information about Freedom fighter, Social activist, Saints & Political personalities etc. to the young generation. Besides this they will pass on this information in their peer group and future generation. Directly or indirectly one often pays attentions to statues while awaiting at the traffic signal and number of questions arises in one’s mind: Whose statue is it? What has this person done for our nation and society? Why has this statue been established at this particular place? And many such queries popup in common people mind. Then their works can be brought to light and made known to students through this research. Their Birth anniversary can be celebrated and death anniversary can be observed while revising their works. It will certainly prove useful for the society and youngsters will be inspired and make effort to do their bit for betterment of their nation’s future.
