AN ANALYSIS ON MAIN CHARACTER’S SUFFERING IN WHAT SHE

DOESN’T KNOW NOVEL BY BEVERLY BARTON

Abstract

Literature cannot be separated from human’s expression. It can be said that

literature is a true picture or replication of human’s life where the human being

look for the way how to express their feeling through literature. By reading

literary works especially novel, the readers can take lessons and knowledge for

their lives. This study discussed one of Beverly Barton’s novels What She Doesn’t

Know. It tells about the story of Jolie Royal Desmond who tried to reveal the true

identity of the murderer who killed her mother and aunt twenty years ago in Belle

Rose. In order to reveal the murderer, Jolie experienced suffering. Therefore, the

writer is interested in analyzing suffering in this novel.

The design of this study was descriptive qualitative because the data were

analysed by narrated description and interpretation about the story in the novel. In

collecting the data, the writer analysed and interpreted the novel related to the

statement of problems which were 1) the kinds of Jolie’s suffering, 2) the cause of

Jolie’s suffering, and 3) the effect of Jolie’s suffering. Moreover, objective

approach was used in this study because the writer regarded this approach focuses

only on the content of the novel and free from the author’s background.

The result of this study showed that Jolie suffered from mental and

physical suffering. Her mental sufferings were: 1) Jolie was difficult to interact, 2)

Jolie was feeling anxious, 3) Jolie was afraid to see stairs, and 4) Jolie was

frustrated. Her physical sufferings were: 1) Jolie was stinging on her hip and

shoulder, 2) potential harmful done by Parry toward Jolie, and 3) Jolie was

bleeding. Those symptoms appeared due to several causes. The causes of her

mental suffering were: 1) She was still in trauma, 2) She was still haunted by the

memory of Ginny Pounders who died tragically, 3) She always saw the dead body

of her aunt, and 4) She was desperate to find Belle Rose files. Then, the causes of

her physical suffering were; 1) She had been shot three times, 2) Parry thought

that Jolie was Lisette, and 3) She was showered by bullets by an unidentified

gunman. The last is the effect of Jolie’s suffering. The effects of her mental

suffering were: 1) Jolie felt lonely, 2) Jolie could not sleep well, 3) Jolie was

unable to leave her room alone, and 4) Jolie felt sore on her neck, shoulders, and

back. Furthermore, the effects of her physical suffering were: 1) Jolie was

unconscious and hospitalized, 2) Jolie could not breathe and was in panic, and 3)

Jolie was shocked. Finally, this study highlighted on Jolie’s suffering issue

illustrated in the novel and become the main issue to be discussed in further

deeper investigations.
