I was approached recently by amn who ws quite fmilir withAMSOIL products. He introducedhimself, nd I soon discovered thtthe retil estblishment he ownedwas an AMSOIL account. He wasplesed to report tht his aMSOILcustomer base has grown steadily,nd he hs hd outstnding resultswith our products in ll of hispersonal vehicles.

    That was the good news.

It turns out he hd not seen orherd from his aMSOIL servicingDealer for over a year. Prior tothis, the Deler hd contcted himregularly, delivered products whenneeded nd estblished himself san authority on lubrication. In short,he had done a nice job. But nowthe mn hd no aMSOIL productson his shelves nd ws missingout on sales. It was not something I

    wanted to hear.

This guy could have orderedproducts directly from AMSOIL,of course, but tht ws not theissue as I saw it. He had becomeccustomed to receiving service tthe personl level nd dependedon his Dealer for guidance. Now,that wasnt happening.

Normally, I might reserve thismessage for Dealers only, but

its importnt for those PreferredCustomers who may one daybecome aMSOIL Delers toreceive it too. There is virtuallynothing that will destroy an AMSOILbusiness more quickly than alack of service, especially if thebusiness reltionship hd beenbuilt on that service.

That is not to say that all Dealersare negligent in the service theyprovide. Far from it. And it is not to

say that all Dealers must becometotally hands-on and hover overtheir accounts. Dealers havetremendous exibility in the degreeof service they elect to provide. In most cses it is contingenton the needs of the account. Some ccounts re content withordering product completely on

their own and require only anoccsionl phone cll, emil orpersonal visit. In many cases justa periodic newsletter will sufce.Other accounts require more. It isup to the Deler to determine thepproprite level of service he orshe needs to provide to satisfy anyparticular account.

The importnt thing to remember istht the Deler network, to lrge

extent, is the fce of aMSOIL, ndthe imge our Delers project ndthe professionalism they displayreect directly on the companyand all other AMSOIL Dealers. It has taken forty years to buildthe strong, quality-rst imagewe hve built, nd I expect llDelers nd our corporte stffto respect the tremendouseffort tht hs beeninvested to achieve it.

I realize, of course, that the vast majorityof aMSOIL Delersdo an absolutelyoutstnding job,nd I couldnt bemore pleased. Ihve seen Delersfrom ll differentbckgrounds,

interests nd skill levels buildincredibly successful AMSOILDealerships. Dealers keep proving

over and over again that youdont hve to be professionlslesperson to succeed in thisbusiness. It all comes down to belief in the products nd commitment to dig in and work.

as n independent businessowner you are free to operate

your business as you see t. Imake no demands. I ask only thatyou represent the company withintegrity and always do what is bestfor your AMSOIL customers.

When Bill Mattson checked the oil on his new pickup hewas surprised to nd his oil level was going up after therst thousand miles. The next time he checked his oil itwas higher still, even though he hadnt added any. Hebecame concerned and decided to have his oil analyzed.Sure enough, the oil in his new truck was being dilutedwith fuel, a serious problem with serious consequences ifleft unchecked.

Though most often used for detecting wear metals, oilanalysis is an invaluable diagnostic tool for a whole host

of maladies affecting engines, from fuel dilution to headgasket leaks. Routine oil analysis helps heavy equipmentowners graph a working history of their machinery andother engines. Oil analysis can also afrm that extended-

drain synthetics are still good to go for truckers andothers interested in saving their hard-earned money.

Oil analysis enables vehicle owners to peek inside theirengines without costly teardowns, providing a proactiveapproach to vehicle maintenance. For those who sayfrequent oil changes are cheap insurance, oil analysis ischeaper still and tells a much more compelling story.

    hp Injector ws introduced s high-quality synthetic two-cycle oil with aperformnce emphsis on direct-fuel-injected engines. Though primarilymrketed for mrine use, it ws lsorecommended for snowmobiles, dirt bikesand other two-cycle applications. AMSOILreserch nd experience indictesconsumers prefer products formulted ndclearly labeled for specic applicationscompred to those intended for widerange of uses. Therefore, AMSOIL re-branded HP Marine specically for use inall two-cycle outboard motors, including,but not limited to, Johnson nd EvinrudeFICHT & E-TEC (replces XD1002-Cycle Oil); Mercury EFI & Optimx;ymh; Nissan nd Tohtsu TLDI;

Suzuki; Mariner; and Force. It is alsorecommended for use in all two-cyclepersonal watercraft (PWC). HP Marineeases the buying decision for consumers,nd the chnge lso positions aMSOILahead of the evolving powersports market.

The Marine E-TEC Field Studyvlidtes the performnce of HP Mrine inthe populr Evinrude E-TEC mrine motorspecically, and other high-performancetwo-cycle marine motors in general.E-TEC motors are unique in that theyoffer n lterntive, len-mix setting thtallows the engine to use less oil. Whether

progrmmed to operte t the stndrdmix rtio or reprogrmmed to the len-mix setting, E-TEC engines use electronicequipment to monitor conditions, includ-ing rpm nd throttle position, to determinethe appropriate gas-to-oil mixture. To usethe len-mix setting, however, enthusistshave been told they must have the enginereprogrammed by an authorized Evinrudedeler nd gree to use Evinrude XD1002-Cycle Oil exclusively.

To vlidte tht HP Mrine providesexcellent protection for E-TEC motors,HP Mrine nd XD100 were instlled inidentical 250-hp Evinrude E-TEC enginespowering SEa-TOW mrine rescuevessel. Following 534 hours of severe-dutyservice (506 at the factory-lean setting),both engines were disssembled ndrted for deposits, wer nd other distressby a calibrated ASTM rater. HP Marineprovided strong performnce nd excelledin critical-component lubrication. Thecylinder bores, for example, demonstrated0.00 percent scufng, while the main bear-ings demonstrated only trace to light wear. The engine also displayed no ring sticking, earning perfect 10 merit ratings.

The 75W-90 Long-Life Synthetic GearLube Field Study (G2975) is the latestin series of studies designed for thediesel trucking market. The series, whichincludes the Diesel Fleet Fuel EconomyStudy (G2904) published last fall and theSAE 50 Long-Life Synthetic TransmissionOil Field Study (G2961) released in March, demonstrates to owner/operators and eetmanagers that AMSOIL synthetic lubricantscan reduce costs by addressing specicchallenges in the industry.

One of the biggest chllenges is theskyrocketing cost of diesel fuel. The DieselFleet Fuel Economy Study proves, throughindustry-standard testing, that AMSOILsynthetic lubricants can increase fueleconomy in short- to medium-haul trucksas much as 6.54 percent compared to

conventional lubricants. The results canlso be extrpolted to conclude the fueleconomy benets extend to other dieselpplictions s well, including over-the-road (OTR) applications.

The remining two studies demonstrtethe excellent wer protection nd depositcontrol provided by SAE 50 Long-LifeSynthetic Transmission Oil (FTF) and 75W-90 Long-Life Synthetic Gear Lube (FGR) inOTR trucks practicing 500,000-mile drainintervals. Beginning in July 2006, eachlubricant was installed in new model year2007 and 2008 Kenworth trucks operted

by Jeff Foster Trucking, based in Superior,Wis. The eet undergoes frequent severe-service opertion huling petroleum, g-gregte, forest products nd other freightthroughout North America. Transmission oilnd ger lube smples were collected from cross-section of vehicles t vrious mile-age intervals. Following 512,000 miles inservice, the trnsmission nd front nd rerdifferentials from unit 2168 were randomlyselected for disassembly and inspection byan ASTM calibrated rater.

As shown in the SAE 50 Long-Life Syn-thetic Transmission Oil eld study, manyof the trnsmissions gers nd beringsreceived perfect merit rtings despite thechallenging operating conditions. Likewise, the front nd rer differentils demon-strated excellent protection. Results of the

75W-90 Long-Life Synthetic Gear LubeField Study are separated into sections foroil analysis and component disassembly.

    Disassemby resuts

Pictures of ll criticl gers, berings ndother components re shown long withtheir merit ratings assigned by the ASTM

calibrated rater. All components achievedhigh scores; the ring and pinion gears, forexmple, demonstrted no ridging, pit-ting, splling, scoring or corrosion despiteundergoing intense pressure nd slidingcontact that can wipe away the lubri-cant, inviting distress. Wear was likewiseinhibited to low levels. Results for all othercomponents are equally impressive.

The diesel trucking studies series forms strong cse for the high level of protec-tion and cost-savings AMSOIL syntheticlubricnts provide diesel trucking pplic-tions in numerous mrkets, including thefollowing:

    OTR eets Road construction

Beverage distributors Waste management eets Delivery eets General contractors

The studies are another way AMSOILvlidtes the performnce of itsproducts. They and other forms of testingdemonstrte to consumers tht aMSOILdoesnt make unsubstantiated claims.Rather, the company goes to greatlengths to demonstrte the performnceof its products in rel-world situtions ndpublishes the results.

Wet clutches are widely used in motor-cycle applications. In a wet-clutch design,

the oil cts s het-trnsfer medium, reducing operting tempertures ndminimizing varnish and lacquer formationtht cn led to slippge nd incresedheat. The oil also minimizes build-up ofwer debris on the frictionl pltes ndprovides lubricity to components andwer res within the clutch, includingthe berings nd the points of contctbetween the outer tbs of the frictionlplates and the clutch basket.

    Wet-Clutch Congurations

Wet clutches cn be found in threedifferent congurations. One features seprte oil reservoir for the clutch (iso-lted from the engine nd trnsmission),nother fetures shred oil reservoir forthe trnsmission nd clutch, nd the thirdfetures shred oil reservoir for the en-gine, transmission and clutch. The differ-ent congurations place unique demandson the lubricants that protect them. Inthe rst example, the oil must handle thelubriction nd frictionl demnds of theclutch and possibly a roller chain or singlegear set. In the second example, the oilmust hndle both clutch nd trnsmissionlubrication. In the third example, the oilmust hndle clutch, trnsmission nd en-gine lubrication, requiring a dynamic uidcapable of meeting a variety of needs.

    Fictiona requiements

Good wet-clutch performance is extreme-ly important to ensure satisfactory driv-ability. Frictional resistance is separatedinto two types: static and dynamic friction. The force required to begin movement ofa box across the oor is an example ofsttic friction, while the force required tokeep it in motion is an example of dynam -ic friction. It takes less effort to keep the

box moving than it does to break it loose. In motorcycles, static friction is the forcetht keeps the frictionl pltes nd steelpltes locked together nd prevents themfrom slipping when the clutch is engaged.Dynamic friction comes into play as theclutch is engged nd the pltes begin tocontact each other. Dynamic friction be-gins the rotation of the steel plates. Whenthere is enough contct nd the forcesof sttic friction re overcome, the steel

pltes rotte t the smespeed s the clutch nd

    become locked together.

The surfce conditionof the pltes ffects themount of friction gener-ated during lock-up.There are signicantlydifferent surfces in clutch: the rough friction-l plte nd the smoothsteel plate. The result-ing force required forthe two different pltesto grb nd lock-up iscalled the coefcient offriction. A rough platewill lock-up quicker thna smooth plate.

The graph displays a typical frictionprole. As the clutch is engaged, springpressure forces the rotting frictionlpltes up ginst the non-rotting steelplates. Dynamic friction between the twoplate-types increases rapidly, causing thesteel plates to begin rotating. The level ofdynamic friction remains relatively con-stant until both plate-types are rotating atthe same speed. Once rotation speed is

equalized, undesirable slippage betweenthe two plate-types is minimized by theresistance provided by static friction. The ability to minimize slippage when theclutch is engged nd locked is depictedon the right-hand side of the graph. Staticfriction is highest just prior to the pltesbreaking away or slipping. Once slip-ping, the resistnce force is reduced sdynamic friction takes over.

Dynamic friction should have a high andrelatively at trace, providing a shortertime between clutch enggement nd

lock-up, nd resulting in fster shift-ing. The level of dynamic friction shoulddecrease slightly as the plate rotationspeeds equalize, providing a smooth shiftfeel. If there is too much dynamic friction, the shift feels abrupt and harsh. If thereis not enough, the shift is elongted ndincreses the potentil for excessive plteslippage. High static friction is also desir-ble s it provides good clutch holdingpower and the ability to transfer the maxi-mum design capacity through the clutch.

    Wet-Cutch lubication

Not ll lubricnts re suitble for use inwet-clutch applications. Frictional proper-ties, cleanliness, clutch material/oil com-patibility, anti-foaming properties, shearstability and high-temperature stability areall important to maintain the integrity andperformance of a wet-clutch system.

Properly selected synthetic base oilsperform very well in wet-clutch applica-tions nd cn improve performnce ndlongevity; however, additive chemistryhas a far greater impact on performance.Friction modiers can decrease the coef-cient of friction within the clutch packnd result in excessive plte slippge, while extreme-pressure dditives com-monly used in gear lubricants can causeexcessive clutch slippge nd relteddamage.

AMSOIL Synthetic Motorcycle Oil is multi-functionl nd provides outstnding pro-

tection for wet clutches. It is shear stablend resists thinning from mechnicl c-tivity, performing like a gear lube withoutthe negtive effects of extreme-pressureadditives. AMSOIL Synthetic MotorcycleOil contains no friction modiers andpromotes smooth shifting nd positiveclutch engagement. It controls heat andhelps prevent slippage and glazing, whileits high TBN helps improve clutch lifeby resisting the acids that can degradeclutch material.

Many people already know that sever-ity of service puts additional stresson engine oil, but we dont tlk muchbout the effects Fther Time hs onoil. Chemical and physical changes areoccurring in your engine oil from theday it is installed in your vehicle, evenwhen the vehicle is not in use. Just likeinside your body, there are a number ofdifferent reactions occurring inside yourengine that impact its overall health.Like eating too many Big Macs anddrinking too much Coc-Col cn c-celerate reactions that can harm yourhelth, contminnts introduced intoyour motor oil can accelerate reactionsthat can harm your engine.

AMSOIL Signature Series SyntheticMotor Oil is recommended for 25,000

miles in normal service. Ive driven only18,000 miles since last spring when Ichanged my oil, so why do I need tochange it after a year in service? Theoil level is full, so why not just keepdriving and get the full 25,000 miles outof the oil? It may be possible through oilanalysis, but without verifying a cleanbill of helth, the oil must be chngedto ensure the vehicle is protected.

Motor oil is continually subjected to avariety of forces and contaminants thatdegrade the oils quality until, ultimate-ly, fresh oil is required. Forces such as

oil-pump sher nd contminnts suchas combustion by-products, fuel, waternd coolnt ll ffect the expected lifeof motor oil.

Combustion by-products pass bythe rings, seep into the oil sump ndreduce motor oil life. Higher concentra-tions of by-products in the oil affectthe rte t which chemicl rectionsoccur, but the mount of time combus-tion by-products are in contact withmotor oil also has an effect. The acids

nd free-rdicls creted when burn-ing gsoline or diesel fuel ccelertechemicl rections tht degrde motoroil. When you install brand new oil andstrt the vehicle, these rections beginnd continue, to n extent, even whenthe vehicle is not operating. Thesechemicl rections result in incresedviscosity, oxidation and nitration levelsin the motor oil.

Fuel dilution is nother mjor cuse ofmotor oil degradation. Vehicles drivenfor short trips tht do not rech normloperting tempertures dont get hotenough to evporte fuel from thesump. Gasoline trapped in the oil sumpthins the oil nd promotes chemiclreactions that degrade the oil. Thisphenomenon is more pronounced in

diesel pplictions becuse dieselis less volatile and does not readilyevaporate, reducing engine oil viscosityas fuel builds up in the oil sump.

Water and glycol contamination tend tooccur together, but water without glycolis also common. Glycol, a commoncomponent of antifreeze, is a particu-larly damaging contaminant and is es-timated to account for 60 percent of allengine failures. Antifreeze can enter theengine through a leaky head gasket, faulty oil cooler or other area. It doesnttake much glycol to degrade motor oil,

reduce lubricity and react to thicken theoil to the point where the oil pump cn-not supply enough oil to the engine forproper lubrication. Once that happens, the engine comes to a screeching stop.

Water is usually the primary source oftrouble for oil in a vehicle that is onlydriven occasionally, such as an RV ora classic car. In those cases, waterfrom condenstion cn build up in thecrnkcse nd remin there for longperiods if the engine is not brought up

to operting tempertures on regulrbasis. Once an engine is warmed up,the wter evportes nd is removedfrom the engine by the crankcaseventilation system. If not, the water willdegrade the oil and potentially promotecorrosion within the engine.

Other forms of contmintion tht ffectoil life include questionble oil dditiveproducts, excessive soot from a poorlyrunning diesel and residue left by pres-surized injector cleaning. These contam-inants all affect engine oil life over time.as vehicles ge, the chnce of encoun-tering some or ll of these contminntsincreases. Since these reactions startwith the turn of a key and continue evenwhen the engine is not running, therehs to be time limit plced on lubricnt

life for good vehicle protection. Withouta qualied used oil analysis programin plce, conservtive limit is used toensure the oil is chnged prior to be-coming critical; hence the one-year limiton AMSOIL Signature Series Motor Oil.Keeping your vehicle working optimallythrough good preventtive mintenncelso helps to keep contmintion to minimum, but it does not eliminte italtogether.

The bottom line is tht fter being usedfor one year, there are just too manypossible chemicl rections to gurn-

tee protection without used oil analysisfor verication. If you are using anAMSOIL product, you have proven thatyou care about your equipment. Mak-ing wise choices nd following proventechniques is the next step in becom-ing a lubrication expert. If it is true thatinformation is power, then everyoneshould be ble to explin how contmi-ntion ffects engine oil life over time on quest to rech aMSOIL superherosttus!

aTVs nd UTVs used for rcing, tril riding, heavy hauling and nearly every other ap-plication share at least one trait: they posesignicant challenges to the uids thatprotect them. Despite spending thousands

to purchase and modify their machines, some enthusiasts mistakenly see noreason for using premium uids when per-forming service. AMSOIL synthetic motoroil, grease, fuel additives and other uids, however, re formulted to meet the chl-lenges posed by ATVs and UTVs betterthan lower-cost conventional products.

    1. Extreme Engine Stress

High-rpm, hot-running aTV nd UTVengines crete extreme conditions thtcan quickly degrade inferior oils. Thechurning ction of engine prts combined

with elevted het cuses shering forcestht cn ter prt, or sher, the moleculrstructure of the oil. Additionally, the intensepressure the oil undergoes s it is repet-edly forced through tight clearances, suchas the interfaces of the piston ring/cylin-der wall and cam lobe/lifter, also causesviscosity loss due to shear. Oil that hassheared out of its intended viscosity rangecan fail to form a protective lubricating lmon criticl engine prts, leding to cceler-ated wear.

    2. All-Season Performance

adding to the chllenge, engine oil mustbalance cold-weather uidity with high-temperature protection, particularly inmodels used year-round where ambientconditions vary widely. For this reason, many ATVs and UTVs require oils with abroad viscosity rating (e.g. 0W-40). LowerW numbers indicate the oil ows morereadily at colder temperatures, improving

cold strts nd llowing the oil to circultequickly for fast engine protection. Thesecond number indictes the oilsviscosity at operating temperature. Highernumbers indicate the oil remains thicker.

Because increased viscosity relates tothe oils ability to bear load, one mightassume a higher viscosity at operatingtemperature equals increased protection. However, using oil with an unnecessarilyhigh viscosity can increase uid friction, which reduces fuel efciency. It can alsoincrese operting temperture, hsteningoil oxidation and degradation. Oil thatis too thick to ow through oil galleriesand tolerances designed for a specicviscosity can fail to protect the engine.Finding the optimum blnce is vitl to ll-season performance.

The synthetic chemistry of AMSOIL Formu-la 4-Stroke Power Sports Synthetic MotorOil (aFF) provides performnce conven-tional oils simply cant match. Conventionaloils contin wx, which cuses them tothicken in cold weather. They also can boiloff t high tempertures, leving behindharmful engine deposits. Formula 4-StrokePower Sports Oil, on the other hnd, doesnot contain wax or other impurities. It offersimproved resistnce to high-tempertureboil-off and viscosity loss due to shear, resulting in mximum wer protection ndall-season protection and performance.

    3. Ethanol Problems

Currently, most gasoline sold in the U.S.contins up to 10 percent ethnol (E10),nd government gencies nd lwmkershave authorized sale of gas containing15 percent (E15). Ethanol is susceptibleto water intrusion; when water collects

in the gs tnk through condenstion orother mens, the bond between ethnolnd gsoline cn brek becuse ethnolis hygroscopic (it likes water more than itlikes gasoline). This phenomenon is known

as phase separation. The ethanol bondswith the wter nd sinks to the bottom ofthe fuel tnk, which cn crete host ofproblems, including the formtion of gums, vrnish nd other insoluble debris tht cnplug fuel ow passages and negativelyaffect engine performance. When thisethanol/water mixture is pulled into theengine, it cretes len-burn situtiontht increses combustion chmbertempertures nd cn led to pistonscufng or catastrophic engine failure.

Tret gsoline stored in cns with aMSOILQuickshot (aQS), formulted to ddressethanol-related problems, specicallyphase separation. Quickshot contains high concentrtion of potent cleninggents tht clen combustion chmber, injector nd crburetor deposits for mxi-mum performance. It is designed for useat each ll-up for best performance.

    4. Chaincase & Gearcase Protection

To reduce costs, some enthusists useautomatic transmission uid or gearlube in their chaincases and gearcases.Neither uid, however, is engineeredfor these applications. Automatic

transmission uid is a hydraulicuid formulated without theextreme-pressure dditivesneeded to provide enhncedwer protection, leving gers ndchins vulnerble to premture

AMSOIL Synthetic Chaincase & Gear Oil (TCC) is specicallyformulted for powersports chincse nd gercse pplic-tions. It contains extreme-pressure additives to provide an extramesure of wer protection, while it is lso designed to repelwater and resist foam and corrosion.

    5. Wate Washout & Inceased Heat

Whether at work or play, ATVs and UTVs are commonlyexposed to water, mud and ice. Frequent water exposure canwsh the grese from suspension nd steering components, inviting corrosion and wear. AMSOIL Synthetic Water ResistantGrease (GWR) features increased adhesion and cohesionproperties compared to other greases. It resists waterwshout to remin in plce, mking it perfect for aTV ndUTV applications. It is available in convenient 3-oz. cartridges(GWR3P) for use with the AMSOIL Grease Gun Kit (GLCKT),which provides the ideal package size for powersportsapplications.

AMSOIL Series 2000 Synthetic Racing Grease (GRG) isrecommended for high-performnce rcing aTVs exposed tohigh heat and friction. It is specically formulated for maximumfriction-reduction and high-temperature performance.

Rinker Racing won 13 series and national championships in 2011.Bob Teague was equally impressive, winning seven races andthree championships. Both teams will be back on the water in 2012searching for continued success across the nations waterways.

Long-time Team AMSOIL powerboat driver Terry Rinker wasjoined full-time under the awning in 2011 by his son, Rob Rinker.Together, the fther nd son duo gobbled up wins nd titles sboth drivers were inducted into the APBA Hall of Champions.

I would have to say 2011 was one of our best years ever, saidTerry Rinker. We raced a lot, but we also won a lot. We are lookingforward to 2012 and getting some more wins for the AMSOIL/Rinker Racing Team.

Rinker started the 2012 season with four wins at the rst twoevents. The team races again June 23-24 in Bay City, Mich.

For Teague, last season was a continuance of a career lled withhighlights. In 2011, Teague pushed the #77 AMSOIL Skater to

Ntionl,World ndHigh Points (all classes) championships.Tegue lso won the Bimini Ocen Chllenge Endurnce rcewhile setting a new Cat Lite record. He also propelled the boat to aPOPRA World Kilo Record of 131.981 mph.

Its kind of been the norm to go out and win races and setrecords, said Teague. But we couldnt do it without the supportwe get from AMSOIL. They mean a lot to our program and thesport of off-shore racing.
