WELCOMEChairman’s welcome to Bedford Blues

It gives me great pleasure to welcome our neighbours ‘Bedford Blues’ to Dillingham Park today for the Green King IPA Championship Cup. We sincerely hope that the officials, players and supporters enjoy our warm hospitality.

This is likely to be the biggest gate at the club for a rugby fixture, so please bear with us if our services are not as slick as those of Goldington Road. We have put on additional food and drink outlets, a small temporary stand and of course the second marquee for a three-course lunch and social event following

the final whistle. We hope that Blues supporters enjoy our post-match hospitality whatever the final score.

And now to the rugby!! As the new kids on the block we have clearly found some of our fixtures to be somewhat challenging this year, however, last week we ‘clicked’ in the Grange Bowl. Our tackling was better, in attack we caused our visitors problems and generally the heart in the side was huge. All of this created a really terrific performance. It was disappointing to see so few people witnessing this spirited showing but probably the combination of Christmas preparations and our visitors bringing only a small support may have contributed to that.

Today is another day!! Bedford will no doubt want to show their class on the paddock. They have a point to prove having had a couple of poor performances, by their high standards, over the past couple of weeks losing to Ealing Trailfinders and Coventry. With progress to the next stage of the Greene King IPA Championship Cup being a distant memory for both Ampthill and Bedford, both sides will be playing for pride today.

At the end of the game I hope to see you all in the marquees for a beverage. Over the past few weeks we have been honoured by supporters embracing our home setting commenting about how lovely it is to visit “a real traditional rugby club” and that’s exactly what we are. Long may that continue.

Oh, and by the way, there is the small matter of a league meeting on Boxing Day at Goldington Road to add to your diary!!

Have a relaxing Christmas and I wish you all a very Happy New Year.

Come on you A’s

Alex Radley - Chairman,

TWO TO WATCH

Josh Buggea - Back Row

It’s been a whirlwind Blues career Buggea who signed for Bedford at the beginning of the 2014/15 season from Premiership outfit Worcester Warriors.

The back rower quickly established himself in the Blues team with his drive and determination as well as a superb skill set being recognised and appreciated by his teammates who voted him the Player’s Player of the Season for 2015/16.

Buggea was a student at Bablake School before moving on to Hartpury college. During his time at Hartpury, Buggea played and won the AASE final against Oaklands college in 2011 before being called up to England under 18s in 2012.

James Lennon - Scrum Half

Nippy number nine James Lennon was born in Enfield and went to Felstead School. He played junior rugby for Cheshunt before joining the Saracens Academy.

He then moved to Ireland to take up a place in the Munster Academy where he continued to flourish. James has played for Irish Exiles U18, Munster U20 and Ireland U20 (v Munster U20); he was part of the Ireland U20s 6 Nations training squad, the Ireland 7s training squad, playing for the Ireland 7 against Spain, and appeared for Munster in the B&I Cup against Rotherham.

Having signed for the Blues, Lennon came under the Tutelage of Lee Dickson at Goldington Road and has continued to expand his game significantly.

1stXV 22 Ealing 24, Sat Dec 07, 2019, Championship Cup

Ampthill welcomed visitors Ealing for their first ever game against the hosts to the Grange Jaguar Bowl on a dry, bright afternoon with a moderate breeze. The pitch looked a picture when bathed in occasional sunshine while underfoot conditions were excellent.

Ealing’s selection reflected the importance that the cup holders place on the Championship Cup and they began very well, as Amps allowed the kick off to bounce leading to visitors possession and pressure on A’s defence. A few phases later and the visitors eighthman, Kieran Murphy crashed over wide on the left in the 2nd minute, fly half Craig Willis converting.

The home side were under pressure for the next 10 minutes until a penalty was kicked just inside Ealing’s 22 on the left. The lineout was secured in the 17th minute and the ball moved through the backs wide to the right for wing Josh Gillespie to show a fine turn of speed, run outside of the cover and scoring mid-way between the touchline and the post, fly half Sam Costelow’s conversion slid wide.

The game was now very competitive but the hosts were starting to turn the screw making it difficult for Ealing to get out of the 22. Under pressure, the visitors conceded a number of penalties. In the 31st minute Costelow chose a kick at goal which sailed between the posts to make the score 8-7.

The visitors lineout was secure and a 34th minute catch & drive saw them retake the lead through hooker Alun Walker, Willis adding the extras. Neither side could increase their score before the half time whistle came leaving the score 8-14.

While the scrum was secure, Ampthill’s lineout was not with 5 lost on their own put in in the first half, 3 of which were deep inside Ealing’s 22. However, Amps looked dangerous ball in hand but were not finishing opportunities they’d created.

The second half began with the visitors fired up but A’s were matching their intensity. The 52nd minute saw a fine break from Costelow who had great support from hooker Sydney Blackmore who scored under the posts, Costelow converting.

LAST TIME OUT

11

Having controlled territory & possession for the next 15 minutes Ealing went down to 14 players after a yellow card for deliberate knock on in the 67th minute to wing Peter Lydon.

The hosts extended their lead on 69 minutes after the resulting penalty was kicked inside the visitors 22. Although the maul was defended well a series of red zone phases followed with replacement prop Aleki Lutui eventually crashing over, Costelow’s conversion extending the lead to 22-14.

Ealing responded aggressively closing the gap with a 72nd minute try through replacement scrum half Jordan Burns converted by Willis.

With their tails up the visitors pressed for another score finally being awarded a 78th minute penalty which Willis made look easy to retake the lead in the game 22-24.

The home side were unable to recover the ball in the remaining 60 seconds or so resulting in a narrow win for Ealing.

This was a much better performance from Ampthill, had they taken any one of a number of chances squandered in the first half the game might of had a different result but in the end, the visitors deserved their 4pts.

Ampthill Head Coach Paul Turner commented “The boys turned up today, I’m really proud of the effort & commitment displayed, it was disappointing to have the game taken away at the death. We showed today that we can compete with the best sides in the division. Now we face a tough few weeks with two games against Bedford, one on Boxing Day.”

Ealing Coach Ben Ward commented “Frankly, we were lucky to get away with the win, we have gone from the sublime to the ridiculous in two weeks. Despite Ampthill being the better side for much of the game we stuck at it and managed to sneak the points at the end. This was our first visit to Ampthill and we’ve enjoyed the hospitality.”

MINI & YOUTH UPDATE

As we approach the Christmas period and look back at the first half of the season, thinking where has that gone, Mini and Youth rugby at Ampthill continues to grow from strength to strength.

Ampthill Minis age groups have so far had a full fixture list playing competitive games against Bishops Stortford, Hertford and local rivals Bedford to name but a few. Whilst no score is kept (officially) my understanding is that across all age groups we have had great success with all players enjoying themselves. The U6’s continue to train each week on their designated part of Dillingham Park and one particular highlight so far saw me witness our First XV Tongan contingent playing ‘bull dog’ with the kids that could literally run through their legs!! A big thank you goes to the First XV players that have supported the Minis training sessions this side of Christmas and hopefully we will see them again in the New Year.

Our U13’s experienced their first taste of league rugby in November with a fixture against, Teddington. The team received a few words of encouragement and posed for a photo with Wales and British & Irish Lions legend Sam Warburton who was visiting Teddington before going on to win the game!!!

Our U14’s, U15’s and U16’s have also had a number of friendly, league and cup fixtures and as I write the U14’s are through to the quarter final of the East Midlands Cup, our U15’s are through to the second round of the East Mids Cup (being played tomorrow!) so good luck to them and our U16’s continue to have a great season with their East Mids Quarter Final against Northampton Old Scouts on 22nd December. Hopefully by the end of the season we will be celebrating cup success across the board.

After a fantastic start to 2019/20 season, lots to look forward to in the New Year.

Gloria and SianLadies rugby has started formerly at Ampthill this year. Our women have jumped in at the deep end joining the Inner Warrior league South East North this year. They have improved every game and are already making a name for themselves in all the right circles. This drive for women’s rugby has been supported by the club and the coaches but also through the efforts of one particular player Gloria Mills.

Gloria and her daughter Sian are both players who are deaf athletes but that does not hold them back. They have both been selected to represent England Deaf Rugby in the trip of a lifetime to South Africa in 2020. However, like all things, there is a catch! Both women need to raise £1500 each for travel and kit if they want to travel. Ampthill RUFC are doing what we can to support them both, even so your support is welcome. If you feel that you could contribute to their fund raising please go to www.gofundme.com/f/sa-tour-2020. Any contribution, however small will be welcome.

If we have the good fortune to exceed this target any surplus money collected will be used to support other deaf players in a less fortunate position to achieve their ambition to play in South Africa.

LADIES UPDATE

Harpenden Ladies 29 v 24 Ampthill Ladies

Ampthill ladies travelled to Harpenden Sunday for the return fixture and their 5th game in this historic season. The game kicked off in blustery conditions and Ampthill buoyed by their recent performances took the game to opposition knowing that they could potentially get something out of this game. The forwards really started well, with phase after phase and defending well and the game ebbed and flowed between the two 22’s for a good twenty minutes.

Then on twenty two minutes Gloria Mills, Ampthills captain got a yellow card for a high tackle and the dynamic shifted in favour of Harpenden, their dangerous backs got the ball in the extra space and scored a fine breakaway try, Immediately from the kick off a lack of concentration and some missed tackles allowed Harpenden to score again and convert. With Gloria back on the pitch equalling the numbers, another fine worked try from Harpenden took the score to 17-0, as Ampthill responded with force, battering the try line with Gemini Forster almost crossing the line, the Harpenden 15 was yellow carded for a hands on in the ruck whilst off her feet and in a tense final minute the defence held out the Ampthill attack. HT 17-0

With a refocusing by the coaches at half time to bring the dangerous backline into play more, the ladies immediately fell asleep at the kick off gifting an easy try to take the game to 22-0. The ensuing barracking seemed to work, with Maddie scoring a fine try from the forward drive. 22-5. With their tails up Ampthill, started putting phases of forward and backs together with Harriet, Sian and Ellen starting to make ground with fine breaks. Fifteen minutes in it finally worked with Sian breaking through the middle after some excellent team play, Gemini converting. 22-12.

Harpenden responded with another excellently worked try by their backs 29-12 seeming taking the game away from Ampthill but no….Five minutes later Sian again broke through after fine interplay with carries from Nichole, Erica and Gemini. Gemini getting the extras 29-19. Amprthill then turned the tables on Harpenden straight from the kick off, with Ellen catching the ball and dancing through most of the opposition to score a superb try 29-24. The last few minutes were a frantic seesaw with Ampthill almost scoring at the death through quick thinking from Chloe Pearce who hacked the ball through and Nichole popping up with the ball, tackled by the Harpenden defence and causing an Ampthill knock on, Scrum and kick to clear and the game was over. FT 29-24

Huge thank you to Flix and Harpenden ladies for the two tough games and great hospitality, good luck for the remainder of the season, to Mike Skeels the referee for letting the game flow in tricky conditions and for being a brave man and sin binning Gloria.
