4 Introduction

JLX-∗-750P/LC/∗ Installation Manual

JLX-HSG HousingThe housing, model JLX-HSG, is designed for optimum heat dissipation. It includes separateRF and weather gaskets between housing halves for efficient shielding and weather protection. Two clamp assemblies are provided on top of the housing for strand mounting. Additionaltapped holes are provided at the rear of the housing for the installation of auxiliary surfacemounting brackets. The RF input and output ports are at the ends of the housing. Two testapertures in the housing cover provide access to RF input and output test points on theamplifier module without having to open the housing. These apertures are sealed by threadedplugs when not in use.

Amplifier ModuleThe amplifier module is secured to the housing by four spring loaded captive bolts. The modulecover has access holes for the forward amplifier GAIN and SLOPE controls, INPUT TEST point(forward input/return output), OUTPUT TEST point, B+(24 Vdc) test point, and 60 Vac test point.Access holes in the amplifier module allow you to tighten the terminal screws on the centerconductors of the input and output coaxial cables without removing the module from thehousing. Use a screwdriver with an insulated shaft, if 60 Vac is present on the cable.

The amplifier module is shipped from the factory with diplex filter DF1-SS in modelsJLX-∗-750P/LC/SS or diplex filter DF1-SS/40 in models JLX-∗-750P/LC/40. The amplifier isfurnished from the factory with wire jumpers inserted in the receptacles for the cable equalizer, model EQ-750-∗ and attenuator JXP-∗A.

The amplifier module comes equipped with XO-36 plug-in surge arrestors at the input andoutput. These protect against voltage transients. The plug-in slope control board provides ameans for correcting for cable slope over the forward bandpass. The response corrector is usedto correct overall flatness. Adjustments can be made in the low, medium, or high bands.

OptionsThe CTF-JLX-750 is a plug-in option which manually compensates for signal level changes in afeederline due to temperature changes. This unit manually senses temperature and changesthe insertion loss and slope to compensate for expected changes in cable attenuation. Theinsertion loss of this unit is approximately 3.5 dB at room temperature. This option is not usedwhen the MB-ACB/∗ is installed.

The block diagram in Figure 11 illustrates the functional interconnection of all components andsubassemblies.

The plug-in attenuator, model JXP-∗A is used to reduce the gain of the unit, and complementsthe gain control of the amplifier. The plug-in 5 A circuit breaker, model CBJ-5, or the CFJ-7Afuse is a user option inserted in the amplifier module if the 60 Vac is to be passed through tothe output of the module.

The forward cable equalizer, Model EQ-750-∗, is used to compensate for cable attenuationchanges with frequency in the forward signal path. Equalizers are available in 2 dBincrements from 2 to 22 dB.

Automatic gain control can be added by installing the MB-ACB/∗ automatic control board. When the MB-ACB/∗ is installed, the CTF-JLX-750 is not used. The MB-ACB/∗ is tuned to apilot channel and automatically adjusts gain to maintain a constant output level.

Two-way service can be implemented by installing the RA-KIT return amplifier kit. Thereturn amplifier is used to amplify the return signal. Included in the return amplifier kit is aselection of return equalizers, model SEE-∗-∗. These are used to compensate for cableattenuation changes with frequency in the return spectrum. A hybrid gain block and twoJXP-ZX jumpers are also included. Not all items in the kit will be required.

Mounted to the bottom of the amplifier module is a power supply component board. The powersupply component board contains a bridge rectifier and a switching voltage regulator. Thepower supply dc output voltage is factory preset for + 24 Vdc and may be measured at the+ 24 Vdc test point. Although a voltage adjustment potentiometer is provided, adjustment isnot normally required. The power supply can operate into a short circuit indefinitely withoutsustaining damage.

Forward Gain and Flatness TestingThe amplifier module can be tested in a conventional sweep setup for checking flatness andgain. Figure 14 may be used to identify the components and their location.

1 Connect the JLX-7-750P/∗ in a conventional forward sweep setup, as shown in Figure 12.Connect a short length of coaxial test cable in series with the input.

2 Apply power. Set sweep frequency generator to cover frequencies between 50 MHz and theupper frequency limit, 750 MHz. Install the AGC programming plug in the MANUALposition.

3 Turn forward GAIN control fully clockwise (maximum gain). Adjust forward SLOPE controlfor a flat response. Check for minimum full gain and flatness per specification.

4 Rotate GAIN control fully counterclockwise and note the gain reading at the appropriateupper limit. Then rotate GAIN control fully clockwise and again note the gain reading atthe appropriate upper limit. The gain control range should meet or exceed specification.

5 Place 8 dB of cable in series with the input. Adjust SLOPE control for a flat response. Checkthat the flatness meets its specification.

6 Adjust GAIN control for operational gain.

Installing Options

Two-way OptionTwo-way service may be implemented by installing the return amplifier kit, model RA-KIT.

The return amplifier kit consists of a hybrid gain block, and three cable equalizers. Not allitems in the kit will be required. The hybrid gain block and one equalizer or equalizer jumper,as needed, are installed in the locations as shown in Figure 14. Special care must be usedwhen installing the gain block to assure that all pins enter the appropriate sockets on thecircuit board. Misaligned pins could be damaged, if handled carelessly. Bend the ground lugson the circuit board over the hybrid mounting holes, and install the furnished screws.Heatsink compound, part number 663-008-000, or equal, may be used between the hybridflange and the housing to facilitate thermal conductivity, if it is available. Heatsink compoundis not furnished in the return amplifier kit.

Install the two JXP-ZX or alternately JXP-*A pads, as needed, into the input and output padfacilities. The input pad facilities can be used to inject return sweep signals in the field, if it isneeded. It can also be used to limit the input signal level to the return amplifier. The outputpad facility is normally used to balance return signal level against other return legs of thedistribution system.

1 The return amplifier may be tested by connecting the amplifier to sweep test equipment asshown in Figure 13.

Figure 13Typical return sweep setup.

2 Apply power, and set the test equipment to sweep between 5 MHz and 50 MHz.

3 Check the gain of the return amplifier at 30 MHz and compare the results against thespecifications as shown in Appendix A.

This completes the testing of the return amplifier.

Automatic Gain ControlTo install the MB-ACB/∗ automatic gain control option, remove the module cover. Figure 14 orthe amplifier cover illustrates the proper location. Install the MB-ACB/∗ board by pressing theboard firmly into the socket. Care should be exercised to avoid bending of the connecting pins.Set the AGC programming plug to the AGC position. This completes the MB-ACB/∗installation. Testing of the unit is more easily accomplished after field installation, andtherefore a procedure is not given.

AccessoriesThe CTF-JLX-750 thermal control board can be inserted at the input position. TheCTF-JLX-750 is not used when the MB-ACB/∗ option is installed.

A CBJ-5 circuit breaker or CFJ-7A fuse is installed to pass power from the RF input port to theoutput. Refer to Figure 14 for the location and consult system drawings for the requirements.

Section 3Installation and Adjustments

Strand/Pedestal MountingThe housing assembly JLX-HSG is equipped with two clamp assemblies for suspension on thestrand. Where greater clearance is required, auxiliary hanger brackets may be substituted andthe clamp assemblies transferred from the housing to the brackets. Installing the amplifier onthe strand follows:

1 Remove the ac power from the cable on which the housing is to be installed.

2 Loosen the bolts on the strand clamps 3/16 inch.

3 Open the housing using a 7/16 inch nut driver to loosen the six captive bolts that engagethe flanges on the housing cover.

4 Loosen the two terminal screws in the housing platforms enough to allow entry of the cablecenter conductors. (Access to the two terminal screws is provided by holes in the amplifiercover.)

5 Remove the cap plugs from the cable ports in the housing. Install an entry adapter fittingin each port. Make sure the threads are clean. Hand tighten, then wrench tighten thebody of each connector; consult the instruction sheet for the fitting to find the propertorque. Temporarily close the housing; slight engagement of the top center bolt issufficient.

6 Take the housing up to the strand and engage the strand wire in the clamp assemblies. The clamps will open when forced onto the strand. Tighten the clamp bolts far enough tokeep the housing on the strand while permitting the housing to be moved freely for properpositioning. One turn of the clamp bolts should be enough.

7 Open the housing and let the cover hang down freely.

8 Prepare the coaxial cable ends as required by the type of connectors used. The centerconductor should be exposed to a length of 1-3/8 inches (or the adapter pin should have thatlength). If heat-shrink tubing is to be used to protect the connection, it should be slippedover the cable before the connector is installed. One cable end should be connectedcompletely before connecting the second cable end.

9 Secure the cable end in the cable connector as described in the instruction sheet for theconnector. Tighten the terminal screw onto the cable center conductor and torque to10-12 in-lb.

10 Repeat the connector installation with the second cable end.

11 Protect both cable connections with heat-shrink tape or tubing.

12 Position the housing so the customary expansion loops can be formed on the coaxial cables.Hand tighten, then wrench tighten the bolts on the strand clamps.

Page 16: Amplificador de Video Rf General Electric

14 Installation and Adjustments

JLX-∗-750P/LC/∗ Installation Manual

13 Lash the cables to the strand where they approach the strand and secure the cable lashingwire to the strand with commercial clamps.

14 Restore the ac power to the cable.

For pedestal mounting, use the clamp bolts through appropriate holes in the pedestal mountingplate for securing the housing at the tapped holes provided in the back of the housing.

Adjustments

Manual Thermal Gain ControlAfter the amplifier has been installed and service has been restored on the cable system, allowa half hour or more to stabilize the temperature, then open the housing and do the following:

1 Check the ac input voltage at the 60 Vac test point. It must be greater than 38 V rms asmeasured with a true rms voltmeter. Check the B+ voltage at the + 24 Vdc test point; itshould be 24 V, ± 0.4 V.

2 Check the position of the AGC programming plug. It should be in the MANUAL position.(Refer to the legend on the cover.)

3 Connect a signal level meter to the forward OUTPUT TEST point on the amplifier module. Itshould be noted that the test point level will be 30 dB below the actual output level. Rotatethe slope control fully counterclockwise, then clockwise to increase the channel 2 signallevel by 2 to 3 dB.

4 Check the amplifier output tilt by comparing the channel 2 signal level to the high endlevel. The tilt should conform to the operational tilt of the system. If the tilt is greaterthan desired, replace the forward equalizer with a lower value, and conversely, if the tilt isless than desired, replace the equalizer with a higher value.

5 Tune the signal level meter to the high end channel, and turn the gain control fullyclockwise. Reduce the GAIN control to obtain the desired output level. If the GAIN controlmust be turned down by more than 3 dB, replace the JXP-ZX with a JXP-* of appropriatevalue to allow the GAIN control to be positioned near fully clockwise to achieve the desiredoutput.

This completes the alignment.

Automatic Gain ControlWhen the optional MB-ACB-∗ automatic control board is installed proceed as follows:

1 Select MANUAL gain by positioning the programming plug. The legend on the cover may beused as guidance. Turn the MANUAL gain fully clockwise for maximum output.

2 Check the ac input voltage to the amplifier at the test point. It must be greater than 38 Vas measured with a true rms voltmeter. Check the B+ voltage; it should be +24 V, ±0.4 V.

3 Confirm that signal is present at the input, particularly the pilot channel must be present.Connect a signal level meter to the OUTPUT TEST point.

4 Tune the signal level meter to channel 2. Turn the slope control on the amplifier fullycounter clockwise, then clockwise to increase the channel 2 signal level by 2 to 3 dB.

Page 17: Amplificador de Video Rf General Electric

Installation and Adjustments 15

JLX-∗-750P/LC/∗ Installation Manual

5 Check the amplifier output tilt by comparing the channel 2 signal level to the high endlevel. It should conform to the operational tilt of the system. If the tilt is less than desired, replace the equalizer with a higher value.

6 Tune the signal level meter to the high end channel of the system. The signal level shouldbe the desired operational level, plus the required gain reserve for the existing ambienttemperature. Refer to Table 1 to find the proper gain reserve for the present temperature.

For example: If the desired operating level of the high end channel is + 44 dBmV and theambient temperature is 70° F, the gain reserve according to Table 1 is 3 dB (44 plus 3equals 47 dBmV). If the level is greater than determined, install the appropriate JXP-∗ padto bring it to within 1 dB of the required level.

7 Reposition the AGC programming plug to be in the AGC mode.

8 Adjust the LEVEL control on the MB-ACB/∗ to obtain the same operational level as obtainedin step 6 above (44 dBmV in our example ).

This completes the field alignment.

Closing the Housing

1 Record all pertinent data for future reference.

2 Check all module cover screws as well as module retaining screws for proper tightness.

3 Check the condition of the RF gasket and the weather gasket before closing the lid.Defective gaskets must be replaced.

4 It is important to progressively tighten the closure bolts in a diagonal pattern shown inFigure 15 to a final torque of 4 to 6 ft-lb.

This completes the installation.
