PROGRAM NOTE FOR AMPHITRYON 38 The 38 in our title comes from Giraudoux's whimsical decision that his was
the thirty-eighth dramatic rendition of the Amphitryon story . The legend does date from ancient Greece and, indeed, many plays have been written about it. Some of the more famous versions include ones by the Roman comic writer, Plautus, a 17th century French interpretation by Moliere , .an ' English musical by Purcell and Dryden, and even a somewhat teutonic variation by Kleist.
Giraudoux's play was first performed in France in the late 1920's and was translated and adapted as a Broadway vehicle for the Lunts in 1937. That version, which we have used, could be called "Amphitryon 39" since the late S.N. Behrman, one of America's great writers of light comedy, has done much to add his special wit and charm to this adaptation .
The play was originally selected by one of San Jose State's favorite di rectors, Elizabeth Loeffler, shortly before her reti rement last year. Our production is respectfully dedicated to her.
