THE hugely popular Alcester and Forest of Arden FoodFestival on Saturday once again attracted a legion of newadmirers who visited Alcester town centre to swoon overa large selection of food and drink stalls.
Whether it’s cheeses or other taste bud pleasers,Alcester Food Festival is a recipe for success for all whoattend.
The great news for food lovers is they can indulge intwo bites of the proverbial cherry as this annual food fes-tival - which is organised and managed completely bylocal volunteers - appears twice during the calendar yearin May and October.
Last year’s autumn food festival had to be cancelledover safety concerns when stormy weather was predictedin contrast last weekend saw brilliant sunshine all daylong which encouraged more visitors to the food festivalas it celebrated its ninth year on the streets of Alcester.
Alcester’s Food Festival continues to build on itsnationwide reputation as the place to be when it comes tofood fantasy all to be enjoyed against a backdrop of oneof the most historic towns in the county.
Earlier in the year, upwards of 15,000 people enjoyedMay’s version of the event and a similar turnout has beenannounced for those who took time out to let the worlddrift by and just enjoy the oodles of noodles and streetfood on show on a beautiful autumnal day.
A bearded Denis Gwatkin of Gwatkin Ciderdrew the crowds to his stall at the AlcesterFood Festival where the Herefordshire basedcider maker was one of nearly 150 culinary out-lets filling the town centre for the biannualevent on Saturday.

Ladders have been installed in Warwick tohelp amphibians get out of roadside drains.(Photo submitted).
Amphibians gethelp at roadsideLADDERS to help frogs and toadsescape from roadside drains wereinstalled in Warwick by volunteersfrom Warwickshire Amphibian andReptile Team (WART).
Frogs and toads fall in the drains whenthey migrate to and from their breedingponds. Since 2017 volunteers from WARThave been rescuing animals from drains at asite in Warwick using nets and buckets.
Warwickshire County Council gave per-mission to install ladders that help animalsescape roadside drains.
The ladders were designed by Trevor
Rose of The British Herpetological Societyto help tackle the problem of trappedamphibians in drains, which often happenswhere roads are located near ponds.
The ladder consists of a metal base withpolyethylene fibre mesh on the top. Ani-mals are able to grip on the material andclimb out of drains.
This was tested on a number of sites inthe UK including Norton Lindsey in War-wickshire and Balsall Common, Solihulland shown in studies to be the most effec-tive means of escape on existing roads cur-rently known.
The real challenge, however, lies in
designing new drainage schemes that are less harmful toamphibians by including means of escape from the roadsthemselves, means of bypassing the drains or avoiding the‘gully pot’ design altogether.
WART purchased 22 ladders which were successfullyinstalled with the help of Warwickshire County Council’shighways engineers.
WART thanked the engineers for helping to lift the draincovers and allowing the ladders to be installed.
They said they hoped the ladders would reduce the mor-tality rate of toads and other amphibians that fall into thegully pots. Regular monitoring will be carried out to deter-mine the effectiveness of the ladders at this site.
To find out more about this issue, help with monitoringand rescuing, submit your amphibian and reptile sightingsplease contact WART at [email protected]
Toad population has fallen by more than two-thirds sincethe 1980s (Froglife).

A STRATFORD couple have become the 100th tocelebrate the birth of their baby at South Warwick-shire NHS Foundation Trust’s new Bluebell BirthCentre at Warwick Hospital.
Lyndsay and Tom welcomed their baby into theworld at 7:14am on Wednesday 11 October, weighingin at 8lbs 6oz and has been named Hannah.
The Centre, which opened in July, offers theopportunity to give birth in a comfortable, homelyenvironment, rather than a more clinical setting withfour birthing rooms, with birthing pools available inall of them. It has received positive feedback fromparents so far.
The Birth & Babies Appeal is funding specialistbirth equipment and facilities for the centre and hasreceived tremendous support since launching lastyear. The NHS Trust is calling on the community tohelp it reach the £200,000 target to ensure that allfour birthing rooms have the best possible environ-ment for women and their families. So far over£165,000 has been donated.
Lyndsay said: “Having toured the fantastic facili-ties at Warwick, we were very excited to be given thego ahead to birth at the Bluebell Centre.
“We had a great experience as the birthing roomwas relaxing and comfortable with soft lighting,Bluetooth speakers and a wonderful pool whichmeant that I could have the water birth that Iwanted.”
She added: “It’s clear that the 100th baby mile-stone means a huge deal to the Bluebell staff. Louise, one of the midwives, very kindly knitted a lovelybunny and matching hat which Hannah adores. We’dlike to say a huge thank you to all of the staff for thesafe arrival of our baby girl.”

THE Shakespeare Hospice has launched a cam-paign to raise vital funds to help maintain the crit-ical service it provides in south Warwickshire andthe north Cotswolds.
The hospice, which last year helped over 1,000 adultsand young people, has launched a £500,000 fundraisingcampaign to secure total funding of £2.4 million neededannually to ensure it can provide specialised care across theboard like its 24/7 Hospice at Home service.
Currently the hospice receives just over £180,000 fromthe NHS each year but that still means the hospice has tofind 90 per cent of what it needs to continue its invaluablework.
Karen Davies, head of income generation at ShakespeareHospice, said: “Fundraising for charities has beendemanding for the last three years so we need to raiseawareness ourselves and create a sustainable income. Ourcampaign seeks to involve members of the communitydonating to the hospice on a regular basis and we wouldlike to appeal to the business community to see if we canagree a corporate partnership with someone.”

Countess’s conversations with castleghosts revealed by hidden papersAN eerie Victorian transcript of aséance has been uncovered in War-wick Castle’s archive, held at War-wickshire County Record Office.
This rare and ghostly document was dis-covered in a sealed envelope stuffed inbetween bundles of receipts and billsbelonging to Anne Greville (1829-1903),4th Countess of Warwick.
Anne’s papers, which have been in thecare of the County Record Office since1978, have never been thoroughly exam-ined since her death in 1903.
The two documents detail conversationsthe Victorian Countess had with ghosts whoshe believed to have inhabited her home,Warwick Castle.
At the centre of the séance is a spiritidentified as a former servant EdwardJameson, who claims to have stolen someitem from the family and hidden it in aroom of the castle.
One of the papers, which is written usingthe so-called ‘spirit’ or ‘automatic writing’technique, begins with the unsettling sen-tences: “Leave all to the future research. The Power at work is not that of the mortalsin the Castle of here. The Spirit of me calledEdward Jameson is one of these who nowhaunt the place...”.
The documents make it clear that Annewas disturbed by the noises she was hearingin the castle. The séances she held, probablyat some point during the 1870s or 80s, werean attempt to refrain these spirits from both-ering her family.
The conservations with the ghosts and amedium, seemingly held in variousdomestic rooms that are now officesbelonging to the General Manager, came toan alarmingly abrupt end in the transcriptfor reasons unknown.
Adam Busiakiewicz, a PhD student fromWarwick University who is researchingAnne’s life and artistic achievements, said:
“I had read from other sources that Annewas interested in ghosts, but I have nevercome across a document quite like thisbefore.
“It is obvious from the way that it washidden in a sealed envelope that it wasn’tmeant to be found. They are very rare andintriguing.”
The full transcript and images of theseghostly letters have been uploaded tohttps://www.ourwarwickshire.org.uk/, andare free and accessible for all to read.

First service centre forelectric vehicles opens STEVE Winn approached a Bosch sales represen-tative at Automechanika in Birmingham last Juneand asked how long he thought an electric vehiclemight last before being scrapped. The sales repre-sentative replied – quite calmly – “about a millionmiles sir.”
Steve has been in the motor trade for 40 years and is theowner of Steve Winn Autocare Limited in Ladbroke Park,Warwick and recently he launched his new business ven-ture ECOFIX, a hybrid and electric vehicle service centrethat is the first of its kind in Warwickshire and the third toopen in the UK.
“There’s a revolution going on within the hybrid and EVindustry which is seeing changes all the time. A few yearsago you could expect a fully charged car to cover 80 miles. This moved up to 120 miles and now the average distanceis 200 miles. When EVs first appeared it could take hoursto charge them but now it can be done in 30 minutes.British Petroleum has recently announced it will beincreasing the number of charging points at its motorwaystations and the Government is backing the industrybecause it’s environmentally friendly. Hybrid and electric
vehicles are now becoming increasingly popular andaccounted for 12 per cent of total new vehicle sales inAugust 2018,” Steve said.
He added that EVs used to be regarded as the second carin the household – ideal for short journeys around town –but now these vehicles are starting to play a far moreprominent role in the world of motoring.
“I serviced my first Tesla the other day,” he said. “Wecan do it in 45 minutes because there are no engine compo-nents to fiddle round with. It feels more like an MOT buteverything has to be done to The Institute of the MotorIndustry standards,” said Steve.
To stay ahead of the ever changing game, Steve and hiswife Jane officially opened Warwickshire’s first and onlyindependent hybrid and RV repair centre with a trade dayfollowed by an open day.
The centre incorporates an area with WiFi, tea anddrinks; they’ve included this because the servicing ofhybrid and EV vehicles is far quicker than that required fortraditional petrol and diesel vehicles.
“The Government is actively pushing for low emissionsand some vehicle manufacturers have announced they willbe switching their production to hybrid and EV only in2019/2020. So when the man from Bosch told me that someof these new vehicles will last for a million miles, I foundmyself potentially agreeing with him.” Steve said.

Views on lonelinessin over 65s sought
Lions offer free diabetes testing
LONELINESS and wellbeing are the focus of aWarwickshire County Council campaign.
They are looking to gain views of Older People’s Dayservices which are provided to people aged over 65 withintheir local community.
Often in a building based setting such as a day centre, they offer activities to help support individuals’ healthand wellbeing as well as social interaction and stimula-tion. They can also provide an opportunity for carers, family members or friends to have a break from theircaring role.
A spokesperson for WCC said: “We are undertakingthis review to discover if the services are achieving theiraims and meeting people’s needs, but also whether older
people in Warwickshire feel part of their local communityand are not isolated.
Growing issue
“Loneliness and social isolation is a significant andgrowing issue for older people in particular, therefore wealso want to gather views on this topic and how we cantackle this issue with services such as day opportunities.
Therefore we are seeking the views not just of currentservice users and their relatives/carers, but also the widerpublic and anybody who wishes to contribute theirthoughts on the service and the topic of isolation and lone-liness in general.”
The online survey runs until 5th November and can beaccessed at https://ask.warwickshire.gov.uk/people-group/day-opportunities-older-people. Alternatively, papercopies can be collected from local libraries.

HERALDSPORTS EDITORA rare opportunity has arisen for a Sports Editor to jointhe newsroom at the independently owned Stratford-upon-Avon Herald.
We are looking for a talented and ambitious journalist toplay a key role in the continuing growth of the paid-for andfree papers and website.
The successful candidate will need to demonstrate a clearpassion for all things sport as well as bring bags of ideasabout further developing their section - across all platforms- and strengthening contacts.
And it's an exciting time to get involved. Stratford has afootball team at its highest-ever level, a cricket team that hasjust been promoted and a rugby team with a long tradition, plus a wealth of other sporting talent.

When it comes to the writing they need to be just as muchat home tackling human interest stories as they are withmatch reports.
You will provide inspiring content for our respected printtitle and rapidly growing website, bringing stories to life andputting readers at the heart of everything you do. So therole requires you to be multi-media savvy to maintain thebrand's strong website and social media presence, not juston Saturdays - but throughout the week. We wouldalso expect a regular stream of video interviews and matchday Twitter/Facebook updates!
As well as writing their own content, the successfulcandidate will be designing their own pages so familiaritywith Quark XPress is an advantage. The role is full-time,involving Saturday working as well as occasional news pagesubbing support.
The successful candidate will ideally be NCE-qualified,although it is not essential.
This is a wonderful opportunity to join an experienced andtalented team in beautiful south Warwickshire.

United we stand!HEAD of football Thomas Baillie saluted the togetherness in the squadwhich is turning Stratford Town into one of the form teams in the Evo-StikSouth Premier Central.
Town extended their unbeaten run to seven games in all competitions after an exciting3-2 win against Leiston at the Arden Garages Stadium on Saturday.
Stratford had the worst possible start after conceding after just 22 seconds but twogoals from man-of-the-match Wilson Carvalho and one from Albi Skendi secured the winto leave Baillie’s men three points off the play-off places.
“I don’t think any of our players had touched the ball when they scored,” said Baillie.“However, our response was terrific.
“There’s a lot of confidence in the squad after our recent run of results and the differ-ence compared to a fewweeks ago is staggering.
“Our togetherness hasalso improved markedlyalong with our fitness, andplayers now know theshape in which I want theteam to play.”
Stratford turn theirattention to the FA Trophyon Saturday when theytravel to Alvechurch –meeting the Church in thethird different cup compe-tition this season.
