AmmerlandDuration 3:15 Jacob de Haan Grade2

    Demo 1: Demo 2:

Get an impression of this enchanting region by the Zwischenahner Lake! The rural parts of Ammerlandcombine fields covered with yellow rape blossoms, lush meadows, seemingly endless country roads, and anexquisite lakeside. Let yourself be lured away on a short musical trip to beautiful Ammerland. Enjoy nature, the lakeside, and the brilliant colors of a unique landscape. Comment from Harknett Music: "This warm and

rich work is as gorgeous and enchanting as the beautiful lake region of Germany for which it is named. Mid-voices introduce the simple exquisite melody, followed in turn by bolder scoring that invites the entire

ensemble to create moments of broad intensity. A beauty!"

    Concerto d'AmoreDuration 7:19 Jacob de Haan Grade3

    Demo 1:

CD recording :The Wind Music of Jacob de Haan - Volume 2

Concerto d'Amore exists of a combination of three different styles, namely baroque, pop and jazz. The statelyintroduction of the composition sounds like a baroque overture. Then follows an energetic part in pop style, that ends up in a characteristic adagio. A motive from this adagio is assimilated in a swinging part, after whichthe work finishes with the return of the adagio in a different appearance.

This piece was commissioned by the Dutch province of Groningen for the celebrations commemorating theliberation festivities in 1987. In the composition, the dream of a world without war is symbolized. It is the firstcomposition in a series in which Jacob de Haan combines concert music with pop music in a style, whichreminds one of film music. Later compositions in which he has reaped much success with the same formula instyle are Oregon, La Storia and Utopia.

La StoriaDuration 7:01 Jacob de Haan Grade3

    Demo 1:

CD recording :The Wind Music of Jacob de Haan - Volume 1

Film music is usually written to match the action in a scenario. Sometimes the opposite is true as is proved byJacob de Haans piece La Storia. Written for creative musicians and audiences, the listener is given theopportunity of making up his own story to fit the music, without even the restriction of composers comments.

Pacific DreamsDuration 9:13 Jacob de Haan Grade4

    Demo 1: Demo 2:

Pacific Dreams describes the experience of Miguel, a traveling composer from Spain who, feeling somewhatalienated from his homeland, is wandering through an area of Sydney known as The Rocks. At a small outdoor

market in a typical street of this old colonial neighbourhood, he discovers a print of William DeShazo's painting"Pacific Dreams" (http://www.shafferfineart.com/The_Art_of_William_DeShazo.htm).

Portrayed in the painting is the surf of one of the exotic islands in the Pacific. Next, with the impressiveSydney Harbour Bridge looming over the narrow streets of The Rocks, he envisions sultry Pacific beaches.Suddenly a theme he once composed about the lakes in Japan comes to him. Is it the Asian influences presentin cosmopolitan Sydney that bring this theme to mind? Or perhaps the waters around Sydney, over which he

could sail to Tahiti? He is uncertain. Could this same theme be used to create a new composition about hisfeelings for the metropolis Sydney? How then to work his Pacific Dreams into the mix? Miguel is certainly no

fan of Hawaiian music. Mayby he could use the vocabularies of islands like Hawaii and Tahiti, their beautiful

vowel combinations being sung ad libitum by a mixed choir.

With these ideas and his newly purchased print of "Pacific Dreams", he boards the Metro at Circular Quay. Hehas a final glimpse of the harbour and the Sydney Opera House as the train races into the ground. On to thehotel! To work! He must compose!

    1. Maestoso : Miguel is impressed as he gazes upon the Sydney Harbour Bridge. And yet, he wants togo away from this city. Away, to an exotic island in the Pacific.

    2. Steady Rock : In the Rocks, musicians are playing at a square. Miguel basks in the atmosphere butat the same time he is fantasizing about Hawaii and Tahiti.

    3. Andante Lamentoso : In his hotel room, Miguel is feeling sad and lonely in this big city. He takescomfort in his "Pacific Dreams".

    4. Allegro : Miguel boards the boat that takes him from Darling Harbour to Circular Quay. In his mindhe is traveling on to Hawaii. Or is it home, where the bolero is playing? He is pulled back to reality by

    the skyline of Sydney.

UtopiaDuration 11:00 Jacob de Haan Grade4

    Demo 1:

Utopia is the name of a book written by the English author Thomas More and was published in 1516. The titleis a word thought up by More himself, after the Greek language, meaning "Nowhereland" and leading to the

invention of the words utopian scheme and utopian. Utopia pictured an ideal state on an island far from theinhabited world. This idea was the basis of the composition. It makes one think of Oregon in variety of themes

and style. Utopia also exists of a combination of styles that breathe the atmosphere of film music. However,Utopia sounds less American. The slow and stirring middle part for example is closer to the Europeanromanticism: the chord signals in the brass section remind of Wagner's music.

The Universal Band CollectionDuration 10:37 Jacob de Haan Grade2

    Demo 1:

CD recording :The Wind Music of Jacob de Haan - Volume 2

A collection of 5 short works in pop style which can be performed by any kind of compilation. The titles can bepresented on the programme as separate works but the Universal Band Collection can also be performed as acomplete suite. From a didactic point of view it is a suitable work to teach musicians something about thestructure in music. For this purpose not only the big structure but also the small structure was kept very clear.

    1. Western Girl : A girl from the west of the USA rides her horse across the prairie, dreaming of herfuture. The rough structure: introduction - theme in a blues scale - the same thing in a differentinstrumentation - finale.

    2. Just a ballad : A ballad in pop style with a rough A-B-A form. First there is the introduction of themain theme (A), then follows a tenor melody in minor with a rhythmical reference to the main theme

(B). Finally there is the main melody, performed tutti with a different rhythm in the drums (A').3. Play the Game : An English saying meaning: play fairly. Playful music in up-tempo with a wink to

China, where almost all games are manufactured nowadays. Once again an A-B-A structure here.4. San Diego : A Mexican fugitive enjoys his freedom in America but also remembers his place of birth

with melancholy. A sad minor melody with a straight trendy beat appears twice. The second time ithas a slightly different instrumentation, in which the muted trumpets represent the Mexican feeling.

    5. Final Dance : Eventually there is a dance with an introduction in renaissance style, followed by a fastdance in rock style. All this composed in a classical song structure: introduction, verse, bridge, chorus, shortened verse, bridge, chorus, chorus.
