! Total polymer demand in 2011 was 2.4 million tonnes, equivalent to 6.3% of total
demand in Europe. It is the largest of the newer EU member states in terms of both
production and consumption.
! Poland has capacity for all commodity polymers, plus PA and acetal resins, but still
requires to import significant quantities to meet local demand. Net imports were over
1 million tonnes in 2010.
! The Polish plastics industry has benefitted from EU funding since 2004 driving
infrastructure demand, the transfer of processing capacity from Western Europe to
Central Europe, as well as foreign direct investment driving production of
components for the automotive industry, domestic appliances and consumer
electronics.
! This led to Poland have one of the fastest growth rates in Europe with polymer
demand increasing on average at 6%/year in the five years to 2008.
! The impact of the recession was also much less marked in Poland compared with
the rest of Europe. The country avoided going into recession but there was still some
contraction of demand of polymer through converter destocking and some
investment delays, which amounted to around 3% for the two years 2008 and 2009.
! Demand recovered strongly in 2010 and 2011 with volume expected to be up by
around 5% in both years.
! The market is being driven by ongoing investments in consumer products, domestic
appliances and automotive production. The country also continues to benefit from a
shift in production for commodity packaging by Western converters and from EU-
funded construction activity.
! The Polish market is expected to continue being one of the fastest growing in
Europe, although a slowdown in the German market may have an impact on its
exports. Demand is expected to continue growing at around 5%/year.

Western Europe. The largest demand for plastic mouldings, by polymer tonnage, is in large
domestic appliances i.e. components for washing machines, dryers, dishwashers and
refrigeration products.
Demand for moulded components in smaller/portable electronic appliances and power
tools is much smaller and declining as most OEMs have switched production to the Far East.
However growing investment in flat screen monitors for TVs and computers particularly in
Poland and Slovakia is driving demand for PC/ABS mouldings. The re-emergence of this
sector in Europe is largely the result of the product developments and cost reduction of flat
screen LCD and plasma technology which has created high demand in Europe and the
physical size of the products which has made local manufacture more economic. LG Display,
Toshiba, Sony, Samsung, TPV Technology and Philips have all invested in the CEE region
in the last three years.
The electrical sector is also another important sector for injection moulders. Products
manufactured include connectors, switches and plugs. Again there is some trend for
manufacturing of these products to be transferred to lower cost countries in Asia. The
German electrical and electronics industry is one of the most research intensive and
innovative sectors of industry and this is reflected in having the largest manufacturing base
in Europe followed by Italy and France. Central and Eastern European countries have seen
substantial growth in injection moulding for electrical and electronic products thanks to
investments by OEMs attracted by a pool of skilled cheap labour, the growth potential of
local markets and the relative proximity to West European markets. Incentives such as
government subsidies, supplier parks, tax holidays and structural funds from the EU have all
helped drive investment in the region. A particular beneficiary has been Hungary which has
become the largest electronics manufacturing market in Central and Eastern Europe.
Furniture accounted for almost 4% of polymer used in injection moulding in 2011.
Production of garden furniture accounts for the majority of these volumes but this is a mature
market that has been declining as there has been a trend to wood and metal garden
furniture. Other furniture applications include stadium seating and office chairs. These

Chief Executive Officer
The Autobar Packaging Group changed its name to Veriplast Solutions in early 2007 following its
2006 acquisition by Sun Capital Partners. Autobar ranked among the larger European polyethylene
film extruders but also had other packaging-associated activities. Prior to its sale Autobar was
organised into three divisions: Veriplast International (which made plastic cups and trays for drinks and
food-service), Autobar Rigid (which made rigid packaging) and Autobar Flexible (which produced pallet
wrap, flexible food packaging and refuse bags). After the sale it was decided to use the name
Veriplast from its drink and food-service division and the group was reorganised into four different
operations: Veriplast Flexible Solutions (film extrusion and converted materials/products); Veriplast
Decorative Solutions (in-mould labelling and printed sleeves); Veriplast Consumer Packaging Solutions
(sheet extrusion, thermoforming, injection moulding, in-mould labelling mainly in the food industry); and
Veriplast Food Service Solutions (packaging for the hotel, restaurant catering sector e.g. vending, fast
food outlets). In total the group has 13 production units in seven European countries for both rigid and
flexible packaging.
In 1983 Autobar was bought by the Kuwait Investment Office (KIO) which developed the company
through a series of acquisitions. In rigid packaging these included Zach Verpackungen, Germany
(1983), Monoplast France (1986) and Vacuplas, Spain (1987) while in flexible packaging they included
Fayard et Ravel (1984), VDB Emballage (1991) and Januel (1992), all in France. The French flexible
packaging acquisitions were merged into Autobar Flexible France. The group also developed in
Central and Eastern Europe with the creation of its Polish plant in 1997 and its Bulgarian operation a
year later.
The KIO sold Autobar to Charterhouse Capital Partners in 2004. In the same year the flexible
packaging site at Ste. Sigolène was closed and production transferred to the plants at Firminy and
Montfaucon. Likewise, its operation in Neath in the UK was closed in 2005. In 2006 the group sold
two of its plants: its sheet extrusion and thermoforming facility in Barberá del Vallès, Spain became
part of Groupe Guillin while its polyethylene film extrusion and conversion site at Oosterwolde in the
Netherlands was sold to a private investor and is now called SL Packaging. Veriplast closed its sheet
extrusion and thermoforming site at Apeldoorn, the Netherlands in 2009 with production being moved
to Poland.

Details of plastics packaging activities
Taghleef Industries operates seven lines at its two European sites for the production of BOPP films.
The last BOPP line with a capacity of 28,000 tonnes was installed at Tiszaújvávaros in 2003. Film
metallisation also take place at its Italian and Hungarian sites with a total capacity of 16,000 tonnes per
year. Typical end-uses include snack foods, bakery products, fresh foods, coffee, various types of
labels (in-mould reel-fed, cut & stack, self-adhesive), adhesive tapes, lamination film, pet supplies and
stationery. A new line for the production of BOPLA films was commissioned at the San Giorgio di
Nogaro plant in 2010. The Italian facility is also the R&D centre for the group.
Non-European plastics packaging operations
The company has three plants in the Middle East – in Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Sohar, Oman;
and 6th
October City, Egypt - which have a combined BOPP capacity of 128,000 tonnes per year. The
plant in Oman had a new 35,000 tpa state-of-the-art BOPP line installed in 2008 and a new metalliser
commissioned in April 2009. The Oman and Egypt sites also extrude CPP films and their combined
capacity for such films is 7,000 tonnes per year. Film metallisation takes place at all three Middle East
locations with a total film metallising capacity of 41,000 tonnes per year.
Shorko Australia, based in Wodonga, Victoria, is now also part of Taghleef Industries. The Dubai-
based company acquired 50% of the equity shares from Hastings Funds Management in December
2007 followed by the second tranche in January 2010. Established in 1982 as a joint venture between
Shell and Courtaulds, Shorko had had a series of owners over the years including Shell (100%),
Montell, Basell and Treofan, the latter having sold it to Hastings Funds Management in 2005. The
Shorko operation now has a BOPP film capacity of 20,000 tonnes per year and a film metallising
capacity of 4,000 tonnes per year. A second metalliser came on stream in June 2010.
