Don Larsen's perfect game World Seriesuniform up for auction

Don Larsen has the perfect way to payfor his grandchildren to finish college. The 82-year-old former Yankees pitcherwill auction off the pinstriped uniform hewore 56 years ago Monday when hethrew the onlyperfect game inthe World Se-ries.

“I've been think-ing about it for abit,” Larsen said.“I'm not gettingany younger andI don't know howmuch longer I'llbe around. Iwant to make sure they can both go tocollege, which isn't cheap these days.“So, I figured it was the right time.”

On the anniversary of Larsen's greatestday as a pitcher, Steiner Sports Memo-rabilia announced it will auction off thefamed uniform. Larsen was joined atthe news conference by his catcher,Yogi Berra, at the Hall of Famer's mu-seum and learning center at MontclairState University.

Larsen, who has kept the jersey in acloset in Idaho, was asked if he couldfathom that his uniform could drawmore in an auction than he made in hiscareer as a major leaguer. “It wouldn'ttake much,” Larsen said. “Because Ididn't make much.”

A Babe Ruth jersey went for $4.4-mil-lion last year, so Steiner anticipatessuch a historic relic to draw at leastseven figures.

“I had only worn it three times, but wewere entitled to keep it,” Larsen said. “Ikept in my closet and it was in greatcondition.” There was only one down-side. Larsen's hat fell off when Berrajumped into his arms. It was never re-covered.

“I was told it was picked up by someguy in New Jersey, then supposedly do-nated to the [Baseball] Hall of Fame,”Larsen said. “Every picture I have of theday, my hat is gone.”

On Oct. 8, 1956, “It was a beautiful day

and I felt great,” Larsen said. “I didn'tknow whether or not I was going topitch. I came to the stadium early andas usual, Moose Skowron and HankBauer were there early ahead of me. I

got to mylocker and sawa ball in myshoe. I guess[third basecoach] FrankieCrosetti wastold to put itthere.”

At that point,Larsen knewhe was tabbed

by manager Casey Stengel to startGame 5 with the series tied.

“I looked at the ball and took a big swal-low,” Larsen said. “I said to myself,`Don't screw this one up.’ I'm just gladCasey had the faith in me to give methe ball.”

Larsen certainly did nothing wrong thatfateful day, throwing the only perfectgame in the World Series, helping theYankees capture the 1956 World Seriestitle. After the seven-game win, heearned the series MVP.

“He didn't shake me off once,” Berrasaid. “He was throwing pretty hard andhad a good breaking ball that day.Everything was working for him.” Bothpitcher and catcher remember it vividly,of course. Such an unforgettable mo-ment on such an unforgettable day. Thesentimentality, for sure, remains.

“Yogi and I are the only ones left fromthat game,” Larsen said. “I'll never for-get the day when I came to the Yan-kees. One of the things I knew, was thatI was going to pitch to one of the great-est catchers ever. Yogi means as muchto me today as he did then. As timegoes on, it hasn't been forgotten and itwill never be forgotten even after we'regone.”

Berra said that he never dreamed thatmemorabilia from his playing dayswould become so valuable. “If I knewthen what I know now,” he said, “I wouldhave saved all my uniforms instead ofgiving them back. “And I had a lot ofthem.”

Moon rocks, chunks of Mars auctioned in New York

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Meteoritesfrom Mars and the biggest piece of theMoon ever offered for sale went on theblock on Sunday in New York in whatorganizers billed as history's largestmeteorite auction, which brought inover $1 million.

More than 125 meteorites were offeredin the private sale. The most expensiveitems on offer were four pounds (1.8 kg)of Moon rock that were once embeddedon the dark side of the Moon before anasteroid sent them hurling into space. They sold for $330,000 after the auc-tion's end.

The most hotly contested lot was a sliceof the Seymchan meteorite, pieces ofwhich were found in Siberia in the1960s. The 9-inch-tall (23-cm-tall) slice, embedded with olivine crystals, wentfor $43,750, about 12 times its esti-mated sale price.

Items that failed to sell included a largefragment of the Tissint meteorite ofMartian origin that fell in Morocco lastyear, and an iron meteorite resemblinga howling face that was found in theKalahari Desert in southern Africa. It

was valued at $175,000 to $225,000.

Meteorites are priced for their size, rar-ity, beauty and provenance. Someitems sold for as little as a few hundreddollars.

Buyers are typically willing to pay morefor bits of rock or iron known to haveoriginated on the Moon or Mars. Lunarmeteorites are particularly rare, he said, with only about 135 pounds (61.2 kg) ofthe rock known to exist on Earth.

"It is the oldest material mankind cantouch, the raw ingredients of the plan-ets," Pitt said in describing the appealof collecting meteorites.

A piece of the so-called Peekskill mete-orite, which was caught on camera 20years ago burning through the sky be-fore smacking into a Chevy Malibu inNew York, sold for $16,250.

One buyer paid $1,375 for a piece ofstone involved in the only documentedfatality caused by a meteorite when itcrashed down in 1972.

"It was a cow," auctioneer Ed Beardsleysaid. "It was pulverized. It was quick."
